I was expecting a new tank or something.

They spent the design budget on S/T5 sadly.

Valrak had rumoured a new venerable dread but doesn't seem like it's coming yet.

Very thin release for the poster boys. However, hopefully means other factions get instead.

Some army's codizies would cease to exist if they loose as much datasheets to legends than SM will do

Let's hope for good things to come.

This is not any kind of exaggeration. I haven't counted in a while and doing so now sounds like work, but the number of SM units that got removed or sent to proxy in this 11th Edition pass alone is something like 3/4 of the entire Votann roster.

Side note - at the start of 10th Edition, Space Marines had one lieutenant for every three units in the Votann roster.

That's a decadent codex, can't wait to try and get it top of the release hour and have the site crash.

Also still a good couple of hours to slide in a miniature reveal for this monday, and if it's styled like the Intercessor/VanVet one they could feasibly do the rumoured Rhino and Dread in one go.

Whole budget was spent on that new Ultramarine character.

Hot take: I am ok with Marines not getting any new units for a while. The codex needs to be leaner and meaner.

Now that the range is generally complete, and we got to keep the Rhino and Landraider alongside the new vehicles, it's a very well realised army.

I would like to see the majority of new models and releases go towards chapter specific things. I want ALL chapters to get some love - I would even be ok with White Scars gaining access to a unique jetbike unit to accompany Suboden.

Does that mean then (using space wolves as an example) that the free supplement rules will be superseded by the eventual coddx space wolves (thus these rules are a stop gap)?

That is my take as well. It would be weird for GW to have units that don't have any officially published rules.

I am slightly surprised too. We have heard rumours of a Venerable Dread and a new Rhino. I was also kinda expecting some new flyers, otherwise why send all the existing Marine flyers to Legends? If they were removing aircraft from the game completely then I could understand it but Orks kept theirs. :ermm:

It's possible the rumored releases are getting held for divergent codices.  For instance, the Venerable Dread may be a Space Wolves release; it builds a new Bjorn, but also builds a compliant dread, and maybe a Blood Angels librarian dreadnought.  Blood Angels get a new Rhino and new Predator (a man can dream) to go alongside a speed-enhancing detachment for them, replacing the Baal Predator.  Dark Angels lose their current flyer, but a new flyer is released in their wave that is available for all marines.

Didn't they try soft back dexs a while ago and then reverted to hard back cos of damage/fraying etc:ermm:

Iirc the 'dexes had been softback from the start until 6th edition was it...? 7th? So technically longer than they've been hardback. AoS has been flirting with softbacks in their version of the limited edition for the current edition of the game, so maybe that was a trial run for this.

GMG Ash discussed it a bit in his Ork video and the TLDR is they're a lot cheaper to print. Wouldn't be surprised if the issues GW had with the various printing houses they used over Covid going bust got them spooked as well (probably a lot easier to get something printed in softback even putting aside the lower cost).

If  this whole release is just what they have shown then jesus what an anemic release, Outriders? They shouldve become a full kit YEARS AGO, no reason why they were kept as a push fit as long as they did. Bike Captain? Really boring sculpt. Vanguard Veterans? Horrible poses and they lost so many options Im not sure why Im supposed to be clapping for this kit, big miss. Intercessors? more like, yyaaawwn.

An entire army line gone and what exactly did we gain in return? Huge dissappointment, I really try to see things in a positive manner but this has been the WORST SM release since they came up with Centurions.

Also no mention of divergent chapters or any timeline for their supposed free PDF update or how many detachments each will get, I aint feeling this one.

Fun Fact: The Emperor's Children codex has 18 units if you don't include Daemons.

With all due respect they get in 11th so far:

1 named ultramarine

5 new infantry character sculpts

1 new bike character

Unit of bikers

New intercessors

Van vets

Bolter eradicators

Land speeder

That's far more than than the customary 1 character a lot of factions get.

To think Space Marines didn't get new units ignoring the pile of model releases that came out in between the gaps. Like, Titus, his crew, Calgar, new honour guard wasn't too long ago.

Not that I'm complaining, Space Marine supremacy benefits me, sucks to be you!

The fun numbers thing to do for Cults is how many of their units are actually unique to their faction (excluding CSM stealing their main cult Marine), especially now that the nightmare scenario is real and core Space Marines lost the Rhino chassis tanks.

EC have 8 unique units.

TSons have 8 unique units.

WE have 10 unique units.

DG have 21 unique units.

We are losing 17 units from the core Space Marine range.

If all the cult Marines lost 17 unique units only Death Guard would be left.

They need to lose the Rhino as well.

Edit: for clarity, and the Landraider variants as well

That way all my green Marines are in Legends with rules for free, and I only have to buy a DA Supplement.

9 years to release a bunch of chaff and then take forever to re-make fan favourite units versus the Eldar generic HQ and infantry update that was done in two big waves released over the course of 3 years.

You mean the Eldar who waited nearly 2 decades to get that big refresh?

Was their infantry range efficiently updated or did it feel like pulling teeth?

Ask dire avengers.

That aside, marines have had plenty of stuff over the 20 years eldar needed to get most kits updated. It doesn't hurt to not have more kits than half the gsme combined for once. Saying that there will no doubt be waves for the divergent chapters and a 2nd marine wave mid edition.
