Master of Sanctity Vardemis

Sorry for taking so long to post updates, but what with final projects and moving from the apartment to home, I've been, shall we say, somewhat busy. Thankfully it's summer now, and I can work full-steam on my entries.

So here we go. Basically a days worth of work. The camera close ups show a lot more blemishes than normally visible, HOWEVER, it's also a good way of showing those tiny areas that require a bit more work or touching up. So I'll get to those and fix them up by the next round of updates (which will be tomorrow). I spent the most time on the skull and the chest eagle (moreso the skull than anything), so those look the most finished. The armor is going to need a couple more layers of brighter highlights, as it just doesn't "pop" at the moment (in my opinion anyways, feel free to say otherwise). The tabard/parchment is the least finished, as it's just received basecoats + basic highlights.

Fire away.

I'm really surprised at how well the blends photograph up close. As I mentioned in my last post. I'll be using the photographs I take as sort of a "detector" for super-fine blemishes. Evidently some are still there (moreso on the battle damage now), so I'll have to keep working away at that.

More work on the armor today, blended it down to black (with a hint of brown in there), plus the aforementioned battle damage. Crisp highlights with a muted-white make the model pop a bit more, so I'm pretty happy with that. The tabard is...slowly getting there. Still need to correct over-paint, and do all the fiddly writing. But the cream color is pretty much what I'm aiming for, and will carry that same color over on all the purity seals and other random parchments.

One thing about the painting of this seems off to me.

The tabard. It seems like you went too quickly from brown tones to mid-tones. I'm sure you'll highlight it more, but...the thing is, basic layering doesn't seem to win GDs. The parchment should be blended, more like the black.

Not that the parchment doesn't look awesome, BUT more work needs to be put in it for a GD. Especially as a large part on the model.

Aye. The problem I find with painting battle damage on black is that it doesn't always show up, especially in the darkest areas of the armor.

Lots of good progress today. Finished up the armor on the feet, the back of the legs, the ass plate, and on the back of the torso. More touchups/glazes done on the front part of the parchment. Started working on the purity seals on the front, parchment on top, and the back of the parchment at the rear. Also painted is the eagle at the top and the skull hanging from the chain. The base has also received more work, going from cream blob to what hopefully now resembles a rock. I intend to do a snow base for the final presentation.

Also doing purple for the eyes, with a bit of source lighting/glow effect. It's starting to work, but I'm going to need to do a lot more touch ups and glazes to get it just right.

Right now, I love EVERYTHING about it, besides the base. It just seems to kill the model, honestly. I know it is not done, but I don't see much being able to be done to it right now, it is just...I don't know.

Anywho, great stuff. :3

The model looks very promising, your paint job is shaping up nicely. One thing I don't like is the base. Your base should in some way "enhance" the look of the model, not just be a weird "platform" for him... At the moment the thing he stands on looks like something weird, that will hardly be too different when painted. Also, if your mini is well painted, that chunk he's standing on won't matter one bit when the judges look at it, at the moment they'll prolly be more like ":cuss?". Try to get some more dynamic looks to the base, sharp edges somewhere on the rock would be a start if you really like it and want to keep it. I just think your current rock looks kinda forcefed unto the base.

Cheers

Good work on the parchment, it looks smoother and more natural. Much more detail in it.

As many have said, the base looks like crap. Right now you should just use it as a platform to paint it on, then later replace it with a large piece of slate or other jagged rock. Paint it in a color that is complementary to black (even if you have to paint it dark blue...).

Now, because the parchment is more neutral and less bright, the skull is truly the focal point of the model, as it should be.

Wonderful job, I think you have something amazing going here...

Would you be willing to share your recipie for the bone on the skull, and your steps, it looks positively amazing.

Keep working on the base, but to say its "crap" I think is taking it a little far, just make sure that it compliments the miniature, and doesn't detract from it.

It looks really REALLY promising! So far I really like it.

I'm not sure about the rock either but I think it could be saved... Maybe if you add some overhanging stuff like roots or vines to it. That could help in making it look more interesting then the rather plain old lump of rock you have there right now.

Also I'm guessing that you're going to add writing to the parchments later... I can see this turning into a great mini. :P

Aye the base definitely needs lots of lovin'. Going to have to get to that after I finish the model (or when I near finishing it).

Veterans night means I didn't get much done. Started work on the metallics. I want the censers to look more like beaten copper than gold, hence the darker, gritter more dented look. The chains are pretty well defined, although I'll need to touch some of that stuff up. Purity seals also finished up, along with the back of the parchment (barring correcting overpaint). I also worked up a bit of the glow on the eyes.

Let me know what you think.

Heh...I think this thread is going to die. *shrug*...I'll keep posting for continuity, and for whoever wants to keep following the progress.

Most of my time spent touching up the metallics (still a while to go for that). Corrected overpaint on the parchment (and there's a slipup on the front that I need to fix. A cookie to whoever finds it). Did the wax of the purity seals. I still need to push it a little, methinks. I shaded the recesses with Liche Purple, and I'm not sure if it shows too well or not.

I've also started work on his left Crozius arm. Need to touch up some of the blends, do the sharp highlights, and battle damage.

The right censer arm has also received some lovin'. I've resculpted the hand so that it warps more around the ring/handle. Replaced the rivets on the gauntlet that were filed off during cleaning. AND the censer is now swinging in the wind!

It looks splendid IMO, the only thing I'm a bit iffy about is the cencer he's holding, guess I gotta wait till I see the arm attached and painted to really get a better chanse to scrutinize the result it will have. :P Paint job is top notch to say the least. :D

Very nice!

I cant wait to see him finished.

Ohh quick question.

are you basing black then drybrushing blue then bluegrey highlights? or is the drybrush a grey color?

Hah...whoever drybrushes a GD entry should be shot.

The black armor is Chaos Black base, and slowly mix in more and more Bleached Bone (gives you a warm grey) until you hit something about the equal of Codex Grey. Then take Skull White, tone it down with a bit of Bleached Bone and Chaos Black, and do the crisp highlights (I use a 00 W&N Series 7 brush for this step).

Beautiful so far. I agree the base lacks something, but since you really haven't done much with it I will reserve my opinion for now. As far as what you missed, the only thing I could see was possibly the gems on the belt buckle and knee pad.
