Der H's Hobby - ETL 2018 Pledge complete

Progress for the progress god! We have had TWO, yes TWO hobby days since my last post - madness I know!

First off we have some purple paint on one of the many magnetised combinations for characters:

And on the same day I made a pair of sickle mag, long barrelled, reflex sighted bolt pistols for a moritat....when I get round it it...

(the barrel isn't bent honest...)

Since then we've played a game (whilst drooling/wishlisting/oogling the new 8th Ed box) where my trusty sicarran (with some help from brother Handro's uncanny ability to roll 1s (see pic...)) popped MANY people, and the Sons of Horus finally made their first jab into our narrative campaign, The Battle for Grandia.

I even had some time today to put more paint on my trench board:

Just needs sand bags, some trench end caps, metals, dry brushing and a heavy wash and we'll nearly be there!

Addendum:

I also contacted FW about the now absent DKOK grenadiers and quartermaster and got this reply

----------

Thank you for contacting us about Death Korps of Krieg. As you've seen, we have recently removed several product from the Forge World web store that have been out of stock for some time. All of these products will need substantial work for us to be able to produce them again.

We hope to have many of these products back on sale in the future. Unfortunately we don't yet have a timescale for this work.

----------

Yet more progress brothers...I successfully used up the last of my Das clay and made sandbags for 2.5 of my trench boards...only 3.5 more to go!

They're pretty basic really, but en-masse they work I think. I also sprayed the metals silver with a cheap spray which looked awesome and blotchy, then sprayed over it with gray (cos hey, metals aren't shiny once they've been left in a trench right!). Repainted the boards in the trenches too.

Once all the bags are in place I intend to tidy up edges and off looking bags with sand (spillage) and home made stirland mud (paint, PVA, filler - thanks Lukes APS)

I might actually get a game on this in 2017!

Great work brother!

All those sandbags really set off the trenches.

Game was awesome too, a pretty fitting send off for the old edition if we don't manage another before the advent of 30K 8th.

Those Artificer Armour saves though. Good job the Sergeant and the dreads earned back some honour later!

  • 5 weeks later...

Another glorious hobby day in the basement and some more flitting between projects. Ive been working on my haul from a certain 28mm pirate game for a few weeks but lurched back to 40K with an afternoon of building deathguard from the new 40K 8th Ed starter box.

First off I set about converting the pox walkers so no two are the same - surprisingly easy to do with some good results that Ill try to upload one day.

I then moved onto the characters - I did not like them. The wood elves esque branches and oversized antler backpacks? the baby/cherub faced magician....they needed to change, whilst keeping soem of the gorgeous features seen on these new super details plastics.

  • 1 month later...

I really do find updating threads difficult don't I....

Blog:
As you might have realised, Brother Handro and I are two old friends. We both stopped the hobby for a time as teenagers and since I moved back to Manchester we got right back to it. Here we are 5 years later and wow the hobby has progressed. Scraping together to get a few squads on the table has been replaced with impulse buying plastic and resin 30K. One game system became multiple systems. One franchise became many, and the hobby butterflies inside us were finally released.

The biggest cause/excuse for this ballooning of our hobby has been buying a house! I recently bought a house with a basement, and his wife was nice/foolish/cunning enough to allow him free reign of that space - pictures used to be on this blog - Damn you Photobucket....I shall never forgive you!

Given that several of our projects are Xenos, and some are other systems entirely like Bolt Action, Arcworlde, Blood and Plunder or other non-B&C orientated projects we decided to start our own blog, which hopes to combine all of our efforts across our range of different systems. In doing so I hope it will force our hands and make us finish some of the many, many projects we have on the go. We will still update our projects on here, and hopefully we will do so with increased frequency now that we have some other drive to finish our work.

Updates:

To this end we are doing monthly pledges of units/characters/projects that we need to finish. We felt the gap left by the ETL this year, but real life has to take priority and organising it must have been a colossal pain in the backside. Brother Handro and I are doing monthly pledges on our blog and, if they are suitable for the B&C, we will post updates on them here too! Without further delay...

I Der H, do humbly pledge to paint Lord commander Eidolon by no later than the 1st September in the name of the Phoenician and for the glory of the IIIrd Legion.

Here is my progress so far...

...magnetised and ready to go....

Watch this space!

PS for those interested in the blog, head over to The Hobby Butterflies and take a look around, the link is also in my signature...

Just a quick pre-nights post (hoping to get some Lord Commander Eidolon progress tomorrow!)

I've been thinking on the progress on my trench board. The idea is that this is an agri world, and the board represents a road through the middle of vast fields, that have subsequently become a trench network (think WWI trenches).

The current fields are of course coir doormats and there are large sections with open muddy terrain (as seen below)

http://i.imgur.com/IX6ViWQ.jpg

Now clearly the trench boards need finishing, there needs to be some scatter flock to represent some of the greener expected. I'm even likely to cover the road in grit and re-paint it to add an asphalt texture.

My question is this...should I shred some coir mat/natural fibre plant liner and make crushed broken crops in all of the flat muddy areas?

It would let me put in tracks of vehicles to show that it was all fields and not just bizarre planting methods.

It would allow me to bury some plastic humans/drums/barrels/czech hedgehogs and wire as casualties/detritus of war.

It might however make it look :censored:!

What do you guys think?

Welp, I actually did some painting of a miniature today, rather than just terrain....don't worry, I painted a lot of terrain as well, but I was aware that my Eidolon monthly pledge has not progressed at all!

Behold my progress today. Limited as it is, but i have blocked out some of the colours and made progress with his base. Added some magnets to keep the base vaguely together as well.

More updates from the hobby basement!

I've had a hectic week since the FWOD, but managed to get a lot of work done on the blog, as well as some initial work on my Store only Librarian in cataphractii armour. I talk about this guy on the blog (or will do once I finish editing it!).

I generally steered away from him first time around, too much night lords, too much bloodletter. The sculpt however is very nice but I've got a hobby knife!

http://i.imgur.com/W6RaJG6.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/MaLwICp.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/BJW0eI5.jpg

My plan is for the herald of Slaanesh to replace the bloodletter.

http://i.imgur.com/CY7bQUW.jpg

I also couldn't resist the swap for a phoenix power spear!

Although the IIIrd didn't have librarians initially, Fulgrim did support the Librarius project at the council of Nikea, and so early to mid-Heresy I imagine those flawed members of the IIIrd legion who consorted with the forces of Slaanesh might be rebranded as gifted. I have no back story yet, but it shall come...

What do you guys think so far! Green stuff to the ready!

Progress for the Progress god!

I did some more work on the Forge World Cataphractii terminator librarian for my IIIrd legion.

http://i.imgur.com/t0ijuOM.jpg

I tried to make sure the flames merged well with the lines of the Herald of Slaanesh - hopefully this works!

http://i.imgur.com/jFDEKDR.jpg

The pads were a contensious issue and having two left over from the Primus Medicae I thought a simple swap and some brass etch would lend itself nicely. Ill probably paint the right pad in a way so as to hide the medicae detailing, but It would work!

http://i.imgur.com/KNew1i9.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/sPBHZi8.jpg

It is a TALL model (don't see him fitting into ruins all that well!), but as a conversion I'm pretty happy.

Ill post a video and some more pictures over on my blog. Hopefully Ill get some Custodes done in the next day or so!

Bit of a crap week this week...I know we dont speak of the filthy Xenos, but my little cat Sam was hit by a car and killed on Monday. Died instantly, no pain, didnt suffer etc etc. Our other cat has been looking for him and needing a lot of support so not had much hobby time.

I have a few projects on the go, and could manage to paint much, but I did put together my Custodes from the open day.

http://i.imgur.com/YA3Rf5T.jpg

Ixion Hale

I'd seen some great conversions of Ixion with shield or with different weapon options, so I thought I'd have a go! I was going to use magnets but didnt have any small enough, so a small 1mm brass rod has served well enough.

Few pictures of the options!

What do you think guys? Good use of spare plastics?

I've also built my Aquilon pattern terminators. Need a bit of gap filling, might get to that over the bank holiday!

....and finally I have my plastic Custodes built (how long have you had these now.....)

I went for 4 with spears, 1 with standard and sword, and 5 with sword and shield. One of them has a magnetised arm with a converted chaos power talon - I'm not sure if I like this given how nice the actual talons are...I have a Blood Angel power fist somewhere that I might convert to a claw instead...more bling and all that!

What do you guys think?

Brilliant work. Really enjoyed working through this log. The gaming board looks fantastic can't wait to see the finished project. Good use of plastics on the tribune always nice to have options for your characters. Hope you and the cat are fairing better. Looking forward to your next hobby update.

The new Custodes terminators look great.

Sorry for your loss regarding Sam, it's always rough when a pet goes.

Cheers Brother. It is, and it's odd as in my line of work I deal with death daily - It is surprising how much losing a little ball of fluff that miow's incessantly can cut me up!

The log was better before photobucket shafted us all! The little cat is managing - side effect of losing his big brother is that he INSISTED on sitting on my whilst I painted this afternoon!

Speaking of which - I got some more paint on Eidolon. Still a long way to go but I've almost blocked out the colours.

What do you guys think to the progress thus far?

Welp, after a whole day of hobbying with my good buddy Brother Handro, I can now call my monthly pledge complete.

This month, and every month from here on, Brother Handro and I are pledging to complete something from our hobby wall of shame in order to justify this whole exercise.

For Augusts Pledge Brother Handro pledged to paint some Tau and I pledged the rather meagre sounding challenge of completing Lord Commander Eidolon of the Emperors Children, and so it has come to pass.

Behold the finished result...

http://i.imgur.com/ANpbO9F.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/rLyuIYl.jpg

As with some of my previous projects I have magnetised the arms, head and backpack to allow complete customisation of the model just incase....

http://i.imgur.com/rpqM0MZ.jpg

I have stayed pretty close to the forge world scheme. The golds are a variant of my usual gold scheme, but I added druchii violet for the first time...I think it works.

http://i.imgur.com/aniyWKr.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/TBfbyjG.jpg

The face was always going to be an issue as they are my weakest area of painting. This has altogether too many layers if I'm honest, but the final result is Ok.

http://i.imgur.com/nnRq2LL.jpg          http://i.imgur.com/f5ho4Cq.jpg

Overall I am reasonably happy with this character. What I am VERY happy about is that despite a pretty pants month in terms of real life events (My Kitten being run over was the last of many recent events) I have still managed to find some time to sit down, relax, and spend some time engaging in my hobby - It can't all be bad can it...

Probably going to have a few days away from hobby with work and a camping trip, but Ill be back next week with a pledge for September.

Check out more pictures over on our blog and check out Brother Handro's filthy Xeno's progress too!

  • 4 months later...

New year, New Der H!

2017 was terrible....too many reasons to go into here, but it was just awful. I basically withdraw from all but essential life stuff for November and December but I'm back and I continue to be serious about actually doing some gaming/hobbying this year!

I really like Lucius; he is a dynamic character who is the embodiment of the IIIrd legion. He is arrogant, he is glorious, and he is a true swordsman. He is also a little bit like Captain Scarlet.... i.e. not actually invincible ("He dies, like, every week..."). The imagery is stunning too. I love his depictions in Angel Exterminatus.

I've tried to make him before, but he always lacked, something. This time I wanted to craft him as he would be in the Angel Exterminatus era. I resolved to use the torso and head from the GW prime model, and de-chaosify him using FW IIIrd Legion arts. Details I wanted were his pack, his whip, two swords, and the characteristic straps from his leg armour.

8JrkNJw.jpg

The GW Prime model is slightly taller, partly due to the cloven feet!

kNnX4Fz.jpg

After much swearing I managed to test fit the new legs. He stands tall and is quite elegant, almost true scale. He will need some GS work to fill the gaps and re-sculpt the loincloth.

cC1xwqB.jpg

I went for two swords, and pads from the Phoenix Terminators. His left hand blade is that of the GW prime model, whilst that in his right hand is a palatine blade sword.

qaFuMgW.jpg

With some trimming and some boiled water I was able to coil the whip into a clip to place on his hip - I had to have this beauty on the model.

So that is him so far. Additions I hope to add will be twin daggers - I want him to seem ready to fight and never be unarmed - and possibly a bolt pistol in holster. I will run him, most likely, as a praetor with Paragon blade & Lucid blade. The former to represent his prowess as a swrodsman, the latter the represent the whip. I may swap these for power sword , charnabal sabre or even lightning claw (to represent the whip lashing his foes) depending on games - hardly WYSIWYG but it is all in the narrative as they say.

How do you guys think I should represent him rules wise? Praetor? Consul - Champion? Delegatus?

Der H

Stunning Lucius a great way to start the new year. I think preator with paragon blade and the relic is probably your best bet for him. In smaller games a legion champion fits the bill pretty well too. The work on the whip for me is what really set this apart from other Heresy era attempts at Lucius. Can’t wait to see him finished.

What do you guys think? Ideas/concerns/expectations?

Der H

Loving the way that daemonette is coming out of the warp flame.

Lucius is looking amazing! The re modelling of him was well worth it and he looks far superior to the gw version

Thanks! It took a lot of green stuff and swearing! The Lucius conversion was quite easy really, but I wanted to show his corruption in the mid heresy era so needed to reign in some details!
