Tyrants of Olympia - Horus Heresy Iron Warriors

Recommended Posts

@Dantay_xv - Thanks man! happy.png Yowsers! 18mm!? How do you get on with that? I'd have thought that'd be huge lol. I think the dreadnough used something like 4mm, but I was missing 5mm and 6mm masking tape. Although most people stick it on and paint up to it, I've actually found it easier to draw pencil guide lines and just paint up to them. The lines probably aren't as clean this way, but they get chipped up anyway.

The new tape turned up today, so that's been awesome timing. I'll hopefully get the stripes done over the weekend...clocks go back for an extra hour of painting msn-wink.gif

@Disease - By all means steal away mate...I'm sure we all do it lol.

@Lord Commander Eidolon, zxyogi and Midnight Runner - Cheers guys, I really appreciate the feedback biggrin.png

@the emperor is scottish - lol Thanks man. Maybe I shouldn't tell you I'm actually the auld enemy in disguise ph34r.png lol. I have Scottish ancestors though, so we're all good tongue.png Where are you based?

So, with the arrival of the masking tape yesterday I was quite keen to crack on with the stripes this morning. These were marked our, filled in and highlighted shortly before lunchtime. The crappy Scottish weather this afternoon was (ironically) motivation enough to start work on the weathering. The three stages of dry brushing have been done, the chips added to the tracks and the hull to break all this up a little.

Thanks for the replies guy happy.png I really appreciate the comments.

I dug out the three Castellax this morning (up after the Sicaran) and had a look through the kits. I'm a bit torn between the bolter and flamer options for the arms. Does anyone have experience of using these and can offer some thoughts? The alternative is to just magnetise them all.

Wait your Eng...Eng...engli. Your one of them?! Your stuffs rubbish give up and try something else ;)

lol only kidding man. Loving your iron warriors. Whats your recipe for the weathered hazard stripes and your gunmetal.

Oh and I live in arran mate. Only moved here about 4 months ago or so.

Looking good, how did you weather the tracks?

Thanks man! The weathering is just a rough drybrush of the base colours, so Martian Ironearth, Jokaero Orange and Tau Light Ochre. Small areas of Ironbreaker are added to the track edges etc to break that up a little.

Haha. No one's perfect pal msn-wink.gif Yowsers, that's a little remote! lol What's the gaming scene like on Arran?

The weathering recipe is just above ^ but the chips are just black with an edge highlight underneath. The gun metal is Boltgun Metal followed by a Soft Tone + Dark Tone wash, then another Dark Tone wash. Drybrush with Leadbeltcher, edge highlight with Boltgun Metal and a spot highlight with Mithril Silver. There's some old school paints in there, but I'm hoping my Boltgun Metal will last the project lol.

That Sicaran is stunning. The gunmetal you've got going on is perfect.

Cheers dude! Glad you like it happy.png

Just in case your Boltgun Metal runs out, Coat d'Arms produce it under the name Gunmetal (they used to produce GW's paints, back in the day).

Yeah, the last generation of white-top pots (prior to the black screw-tops) are still in production by Coat d'Arms.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for the tip man i'll make sure and let you know if I get to use it lol.

I have no idea how the gaming is on arran. Been busy settling in but I'm not setting my hopes to high lol. I'll be happy if I can get the ferry back over to the mainland once in a blue moon and travel to the Ayr shop (if its still open)

Keep up the good work saxon

Yeah, you're right mate, the Coat d'Arms paints are pretty good. I've noticed a slight difference in a couple of them, but they're the next best thing to the old range.

No problem dude. I'm sure there'll be a club or shop somewhere in that area. If not, you could always convert the neighbours. msn-wink.gif

That Scarab is looking rather lovely! Great job.

Thanks man...I assume you mean Sicaran tongue.png Scarab could be down the line, Thousand Sons are tempting with the new boxed set out.

Awesome looking Iron Warriors mate. The weathering and details are brilliant. Will be following

Thanks pal, really glad you like them. biggrin.png

These are the best Iron Warriors I've seen yet. Fantastic job.

You flatter me sir happy.png I really appreciate that though. There were some really amazing looking Iron Warrior armies in the ANZAC Cup down under.

It's been very long overdue, but this weekend I finally got the last of the Sicaran painted. It hasn't been a particularly difficult project, but for some reason it just seemed to stall a few times. Now the Iron Warrior decals are out, I'll probably pick up a set soon to finish everything off properly.

The timing has been pretty good...this Saturday is a local wargaming show and our club will be attending so I thought I'd enter this model into the painting competition.

Next up will be the unit of Castellax, two with mauler bolt cannon and one with darkfire cannon. I'll have a wee dig around this forum to get some inspiration, there's been some great looking Heresy armies popping up just lately.

Amazing stuff, inspired me to start my own Iron Warriors with the new boxed set. I hope they will look allright in Mk IV armour. How do you paint the hazard stripes? They look far superior too my shoddy attempts on test models.

The Sicaran is truly exceptional. The weathering tones are impressive (although I like more mud - shall go crazy with it on my own vehicles shortly), especially the scratches. I love the tones of the metal - it is not easy to make Iron Warriors look natural with that well large amount of Iron!! Excellent work, keep it up!
