Tyrants of Olympia - Horus Heresy Iron Warriors

Recommended Posts

@Dosjetka - Thanks man. I'll probably do him with a bloodied up face where his helmet has split. Work on this squad has been a little slow this week, what with a visiting sister and feeling obliged to entertain...damn interruptions  lol. The marines have been undercoated and their bases were painted this morning. I'll probably make a start on the silver armour later today and sort out a picture in the next few days.
@A Kvlt Ghost - Cheers dude ^_^ The brass is Vallejo Model Colour 70801 Brass. That's washed with Army Painter Strong Tone, then Seraphim Sepia, then highlighted up.
The bases took a bit of thinking about before starting this project. Dark silver is very drab, so browns and greys would just merge with it and the model would get lost. The process is as follows:

Base: Rhinox Hide

Drybrush: Martian Ironearth

Drybrush: Jokaero Orange

Drybrush: Tau Light Ochre

Drybrush: Ushabti Bone

What colours have you been using?

@Gearhart - Thanks for the comment biggrin.png Once these ten guys are done the more exciting models will start to get bought and worked on.

Awesome work so far, I am loving these Iron Warriors. I have seen a lot of IW in my time (it was over a decade ago, but still) and most were pretty unimpressive. You've certainly nailed the character of them, having just finished reading Angel Exterminatus I have developed a fondness for the IVth. I especially love the Forge Lord, I need to steal that idea....

Takes a skilled hand to take the mundane and drab, and turn it into something that is noticeable, and full of character

@Lord Commander Eidolon and Andvarr A - Thanks for the kind words guys, I really appreciate it. happy.png

A mini update on this second squad. The bases were done at the weekend (minus spent ammunition) and the base coat silver was finished last night. The first of the armour washes will be applied tonight and probably the second one tommorrow once completely dry.

I still haven't decided where the hazard stripes will go on each model yet, they'll be compared to the previous squad to make sure no two models looks the same.

Ah, that's the difference! I've also been using Tau Light Ochre and Ushabti Bone, but over Steel Legion Drab, not Martian Ironearth. I'll try that out, cheers for the recipe.

Liking that guy with the damaged helmet more and more all the time, looking forward to seeing him finished.

@A Kvlt Ghost - Yeah, it seems a little too red after the first drybrush, but the other colours tone it down enough to leave it looking red/orange but not overly.

Small update. The marines have all had their two washes done and their drybrush. The three below have also had both their Boltgun Metal highlight and spot highlight of Mithril Silver. The picture below is for comparison with the previous batch. I was possibly a little over enthusiastic with the brybrush, but not really enough to make an obvious difference.

As we all do, I got a little distracted the other night and had an idea for my Praevian. After faffing with the left over chainblades from the tacticals I came up with a sinister looking chain mace for him. The plan is to give him a breacher shield but sourcing single ones of these is proving pretty hard work. He's looking characterful despite the blutac tongue.png

@The Hydra & Grizzly_bear - Thanks guys smile.png

Decided to take the afternoon off work today to get some more of this second squad done. The gold trim was completed yesterday and the yellow base for the stripes added today. I'm not 100% sure about the MKIII guy with the (soon to be striped) visor. He would possibly look better with the grill blocked up. Will press on with him regardless for now though.

The first of the stripes has just been added and I'm pretty pleased with the results. Unfortunately this part is a very slow process, the black and yellow on this guy alone taking about half an hour with touch-ups.

Some amazing looking Iron Warriors, Ferret. I'm a big fan of the bases. They're looking well.

In regards to the stripes, I've always found doing them is a long and tedious process, and would be pretty chuffed to have done something that good in half an hour.

Keep up the good work.

  • 3 weeks later...

It feels like ages since the last update. I lost quite a bit of motivation to paint over the last couple of weeks. A little bit of uncertainty with re-organisation at work is kind of a buzz-kill, but thankfully that's past now and the motivation to paint is back.

The end is very near for the second lot of tactical marines (thankfully). Apart from the back packs and guns, they're pretty much finished. I'm really happy with the way the flesh tone has come out for these guys. Although it's not hyper realistic, it looks decent enough and was really simple to do.

In other news...a little order turned up the other week, which I'm pretty keen to get started on biggrin.png
