3,000 point 30k Iron Hands list - Completed

Hi folks!

I've recently started a fairly large project, 3,000 points worth of 30k Iron Hands, and I was looking for somewhere to share my progress with the outside world! The challenge for me is painting black and making it look good, plus livening up the Iron Hands scheme by injecting some colour - in this case, red bolters and slightly warmer metallic on the silver. Let me know what you think! I've already completed the first 10 tactical marines, photos below!

BATTLE PLAN

Orth into Venator, anti tank. 1st Apothecary joins plasma squad.

Ferrus, with Gorgon Terminators in Spartan. Moves up the board with Mechanised Tactical Squad with supporting fire from Venator and Deredeo.

Predators and plasma squad to outflank.

17 man tactical squad joined by Praetor and 2nd Apothecary, unit to deploy inside Storm Eagle, mission: take and hold mid/back field objective.

Awesome paint job, bro! Really nice and clean. The metallics look great and the highlights on the black are very well done (not easy to do). Looking forward to seeing the full 3k develop :tu:

Cheers! The black on this occasion is achieved by base coating the mini with dark grey, and 2-3 liberal applications of nuln oil. The result isn't what you'd call a pitch black, but in my opinion makes for a more aesthetically pleasing colour overall.

I definitely think that it works better then if you went with a pitch black. It works well with your dirty metal that you have chosen. Again great job dude

Been a while since a posted an update - sorry! I'm kinda new to this paint blogging kinda thing, and trying to resist the temptation to only post up images of stuff thats done! So, without further ado, here's the progress I've made over the last month or so between work and buying a house;

Got another 10 man tac squad built and base coated, along with a Deredeo for some fire support!

All of the Rhino chassis tanks prepared now, and base coated - so better progress than in this photo! The rhinos were largely reclaimed from my marine army from 10 years ago.

Predator Executioner provides me with some much needed AP2 in 1000 point games! Plus it was a fun conversion Its actually pictured on a Rhino here, hence the bolter.

Progress on silver bits + washing, circa last night!

Hoping to get the tactical squad completed in the next few weeks and then start tackling the tanks. Not really sure how to achieve the colour match, as I cant use the wash layer technique on all those flat surfaces, it just wont dry correctly! Ideas on a postcard?

Time for another update, just to keep it semi regular! Played a few more 1000 point games of 30k in the last week or two. Have learnt that Iron Hands are not to be sneered at!

This is every Iron Hands model I have currently built and/or in some stage of painting. Well, there's a Contemptor as well but I totally forgot about him when I took this photo... oops! So yes, progress;

Tactical Squad #2 are almost complete. Just need to do weathering powder, silver highlights, bolters and bases and then we are done! Oh, and the Sergeants head of course, but I save that as a treat for the end! :)

Cheers! I really liked the contrast the base provided with the dark model. I feel that getting detail to show on black miniatures is difficult enough without adding a dark base to the problem!

 

Yeah, the vehicles will be happening soon! Fingers crossed >_<

Haha, cheers :) Pepper is in charge of all tactical decisions the legion makes. Ferrus appointed her Equerry just before Istvaan V... it didnt work out so well, but being a cat she doesn't really care.

Haha, funny you should say that - a few months back she kept stealing the torsos of my Gorgon terminators! I guess they'd make good cat toys :P Shes good at sitting on objectives, normally knocking them over or off the board entirely mid game!

Back again with another update following a rather unpleasant bought of food poisoning from a local restaurant!

Tactical squad two is now finished, as pictured here (albeit needing one more coat on the base rim!) pretty happy with how these turned out, thought the Sergeant's face wasnt quite as good as the first one!

Started some preliminary work on my Storm Eagle conversion. Its half cop out, half inspired. Behold; the Iron Crow. Just before the breakout of the heresy the Iron Hands were working with the Mechanicum on a replacement for the Storm Eagle, later known as the Storm Raven - The Iron Crow was a prototype pushed into service at the outbreak of the heresy. (Thats my excuse anyway...it will be using the rules for a storm eagle in any case!)

Also completed my Castrmen Orth replacement, Kaspar Nyx. He is magnetised at the waist so I can pop him into his tank turret with limited faff!

Finally, my WIP Rhino chassis. Wanting to do lots of weathering on this, including lots of mud. Need to find a half decent tutorial!



Hopefully I'll have made a decent dent in the tanks on my first 1000 points by next time!

I usually stay away from chapters with black color schemes because it seems like a very dull color (and I can't even paint it in my dreams), but I like your take on the black armor. Is it a grey basecoat and multiple washes of black? I like it and would like to replicate it on a test model.

The way I always think of it is that marines don't need a banner showing who is in charge, they would have amazing battlefield awareness and various gizmos in their helmets that would keep track of that sort of thing.

Cheers, glad you like it! Yes, that is essentially the crux of this. Dark grey base coat, followed by two coats of nuln oil - works a treat! Unless you put it right next to something painted with abaddon black, it just looks like a nice shade. Give it a go! :)

Haha, yes - undoubtedly! But when the models Im using for sergeants already have Legion Standards of various design I kinda felt like the HQ choice needed something :) Its all good!

Sorry about that... it seems I disappeared for four months. Still, life does that sometimes doesn't it? I've moved house, amongst other things so finally have a hobby room set up again which finally means I can get on properly once again.

I've not been totally idle in this time either, so without further ado... progress!

I've now managed to complete 2 Rhinos and 2 Predator Executioners up to a standard I am happy with for the time being. Battle damage, transfers and more weathering will occur at a later date.

1000 point list on display, minus the Deredeo which I am still working on.

I think the OSL on the headlights is a little bright, but not so unhappy with it that I am going to change it I think it looks pretty striking at least. Working on my airbrush skills to make the spray a little finer, as there are a few spits here and there.

So, another week another update! I had to get the Deredeo finished in order to complete my 1000 points for a local campaign day I had organised requiring everyone to bring models painted as much as possible, so here are some WIP shots of the Deredeo, followed by it completed and then the whole 1000 points as it stands! :)

Finished product, with the edge highlights dulled a bit with weathering powders and the like :) Next to a marine for colour comparisons.

The fully painted 1000 points as it stands! Need some transfers at some point, but those will go on soon!!

 

 

Next up I'll be starting work proper on the Iron Crow, and a few more tactical marines to ride inside along with a Delegatus - exciting times!

A Sicaran Venator is next on my to do list. One of the beautiful things about him is that I've magnetised at the waist so he can tank swap depending on what Im playing :)
