Apocalypse Lords

Just wondering are they called sons of Onar/Orar they have the same symbol? They have been in th WD a couple of times.
Actually, they have nothing to do with the SoO. My chapter development goes quite a ways back (right after the EoT concluded) and their earliest public unveiling was in the last "Create a Chapter" contest where I won the local contest with a (in my opinion) nasty rendition of the current project. So, these guys have actually been around for quite awhile, though I'm not sure if they predate the SoO.

Anyway, these guys are known as "The Apocalypse Lords" per my signature. :)

possibly you could also do a half and half pattern on the storm bolters, or just incorporate white on it somehow? otherwise, they're looking really good

"AAAAGGGHHHH!!! MORE WHITE?!!!" <slaps forehead, passes out, and falls off chair>

Ok, looks good so far

White seems rather stark. I would go back on the white and add some Shadow Grey mixed with a little Enchanted Blue to shade the recesses. thin it 50-50 with water and just paint in the lines. Simple enough anyone can do it.

Add a little chestnut ink wash to the gold. Just enough to tint it reddish a bit. it adds depth.

Black looks good.

The storm bolters do need a little something more. A checkboard pattern would add a little bling to it. Or just go back and highlight the details and the spots that are unfinished.

With a little effort, this could be a Golden Demon quality army. You can do it <nudge nudge> < hint hint>

Waiting for the "but..."

Completely agree. I'll be putting some darkness into the recesses as it definitely needs some depth.

Add Chestnut even though the foundation is DA Green?

Black looks good.

It's Ok, but I think when I get some of the scripting on it, it will show better.

So, nobody seems to think that a red/maroon-ish gun casing is a good deal?

You keep hinting, I've got an army to paint. Then one after that (Elysians), then another (Phase II of this project). I NEED to get them on the board soon. Still they are a ways away from seeing the tabletop, but I'm not even thinking GD. I have an awful lot to learn before I consider doing something like that...like how do you do this without wanting to commit suicide twice a day. ;)

Besides, I think I'd be more interested in doing an Adepticon event...something that was more gaming focused (he says as if he is a better gamer...which he's not).

Thanx for the feedback and tune in in later tonight as I did some work on the Librarian and I will be posting those pics.

Heh heh, yup.

The gold on the rank and file termies. All the metallics look a little shallow. A thin glaze with the chestnut ink, not a wash, will give them a little more depth and character. I like to think I know something about characters. ^_^

Now with regard to commiting suicide, eh that's for quiters. life is so much more interesting with 20 things going on at once and not enough time to do any of them. I have enough unpainted lead that I will never die, just like George Burns and Keith Richards. And don't believe the hype about George being dead, I saw him greetin people at a Walmart not too long ago.

Tried to post last night, but B&C seemed to be having problems. So....

Here are some updates on the Librarian:

1. Highlighted the hair: Shadow Grey highlights, then some SW Grey highlights, then a thinned black ink wash (1:15)

2. Marble fu: Attempted to do a marbling effect (first time, so be gentle) on the central bar of the naginata. This started as Chaos Black + Scaley Green, then thinned Scaley Green, then worked up highlights with Skull White. I may put a thin green ink wash on it to deepen the color, though it looks pretty decent now

3. Recesses (as opposed to excesses): Flesh Wash + Black Ink (1:2) in all of the deep spots to get rid of those nasty bright lines that kept showing up where there ought to be darkness

Remaining tasks:

i. More stone work: at a distance the Crux looks pretty decent, but when I see it up close in pictures, it's obvious that it needs more work. Also, I have to do the jewel.

ii. The blade guard: I keep hemming and hawing over this section. It seems like I should not do anything too distracting here, so most likely work up a base of Tin Bitz, then Boltgun, with perhaps a few highlights. There is a section of tube that might get some sort of an "energy" effect on it, but again, I don't think I want this to section to become the focus...thoughts on that?

I think if I can nail those last few things down, then I could call this a "wrap" and focus on the squads for as long as we both shall live. ;)

Hey Tristan!

Ok, I think if I'm going to add white streaks, then I probably ought to add a thinned down coat of ink on the marble.

Thanx for the feedback!

Ok so here is what I think.

I think the marble is off to a decent start. Not Golden Demon ( there is that word again) but certainly not bad either. I must admit that fist impression is not a of marble though, to me it looks like a power cell, think necons, with the various enegies flowing around inside. I was disappointed when you said it was marble cause I thought it was a really neat idea and very creative.

On the should pad crux terminus, what I think will hep it is a tiny touch of white on the very tips of the cross bones and corners of the crux( the not crossbones thingys)

Also, the hair. The grey is just not doing it for me. maybe a brown glaze so it looks more like a greying drak brown instead of grey. That or do the highlights with more dark blue and then a tiny bit of grey to accentuate the black color. Grey is so hard on black, it always makes it look washed out and dull. If you want crisp black with lots of luster, use dark blue or brown to highlight. Much more complimentary to black than grey. Many Golden Demons ( funny, that word keeps popping up) use blue or brown before they use grey for this very reason.

I think you should be feeling quite proud of what you have accomplished. Almost giddy with glee I would say.

@GAR,

I love ya man...yer gonna kill me, but...

Ok, ixnay on the ay-gray hair highlights. I think I'll look into a blue highlight as I want him to have black hair.

Losing my Marbles: And here I thought you'd be so proud :D So, it's not "marble" marble, just a mable effect of sorts. Would it be better if I said it was a "jade" effect? Also, when I saw some of the tutorials on marbling, I wasn't too excited about how the examples turned out given what I wanted to do so I winged it.

Anyhoo, I like how the color turned out, but as stated above will deepen the green a bit with some ink, then come back with white as Tristan suggested and see where it stands.

Touch up the Crux: Got it...

Now, while your waxing all philosophical like, what about the blade guard?

Giddy? No, but happy with how he's coming out. He is very close to my initial vision and I think that is a good thing. Also, I can hardly wait until he wacks your Avatar off at the knees. ;)

For the general populace: GAR is my painting sensei (a Silver demon winner at Chicago last year), which is why he beats me over the head and shoulders thusly...and I am learning to enjoy the pain.

He and some others are part of our local gaming group (Houston, Tx). He keeps threatening me with his [xenos scum] army from a recently released codex, but I know the Emperor favors me, so no worries.

Cheers,

I hear you bro'

Two months ago, I thought, "20 termies, piece o' cake". Then I started looking at the list closer and ended up with 30. Still I thought, "It's not like I'm going to do 60 or 70 tacticals, piece o' cake"...sixty days later, looking at another sixty days minimum, I'm thinking, "holy criminy, who's idea was this in the first place? Why on earth would you do black AND white. Why don't you just throw in some yellow and red too, their a pain in the neck to paint, why go half way?"....

So, me and you bro', to the end...

You could of course, dare I say it, paint a rainbow strip down the center and rename them the "Crusaders for Manly Virtue"

That would be something, although I am not sure if it would be a good thing.

Keep it up Honda!! YOU CAN DO IT MY YOUNG PADAWON!!

Just a quick update.

1. I deepened the "jade" effect with green ink. Then added a few white streaks. To be honest, I don't think I like it as much as before. It looks busier. However, I shall leave it as is for now.

2. I took out the grey highlights and put in blue. Now his hair looks blue. I don't like it at all. I'm sure this has more to do with me not implementing the instructions correctly, or not using the correct technique, but I spent a lot of time on the hair yesterday and at the end of all the effort his hair is blue. So I will most likely back the blue out, get back to a black base, and do something else. The blue just doesn't work with the gold armor, though it seems like it ought to.

Live and learn.

All things being equal, I will work on the squad again and get some deep color on the white side recesses...and move on.

I will do some pre-rework pictures and then post the results of tomorrow's session on Saturday.

Same Bat time, same Bat channel!

Less is more.

Control you must learn control. Size matters not.

The only way to a golden demon is with effort and...more effort.

More than likely you applied too much blue. Go back, wash with a black ink wash then just lightly aplly the dark blue. Then add a little shadow grey to the dark blue and then ever so lighty apply that to the areas of the hair where the light will hit it.

Do or do not, there is no try.

and don't forget ' its my party and I'll cry if I want to..."

Ok, here we go...

Management Level Summary:

Kensai

1. Project Restore Hair worked out fairly well. I got back to a black base, then went with Regal Blue (much darker than Enchanted), then lightened up from there to Shadow Grey, then SW Grey. Although the overall effect is not quite "black hair", I like how it turned out. There are "before" and "after" pictures below.

2. Finished up the blade guard. Nothing spectacular, but then again, I'm not trying to develop another visually high impact area. As stated in a previous note, I fiddled with the "jade" effect and I'm not as critical of it now as I was a couple of days ago. Perhaps it is true that absence makes the heart grow fonder.

3. Touched up Crux stone work. This area has quite a bit of very subtle blending on it which may not come across on the pics.

4. Highlighted the wax on the purity seals then added some Flesh Wash. I really like how it deepened the color and made it look like real wax.

5. Finished dry brushing the stone work on the base. So for all intents and purposes, he's a wrap. The next time you see him will be with painted sand on his base, accompanying his retinue in the "Hall of Heroes".

Retinue

1. I put a darker color in the recesses. The color is VMC 987 + Codex Grey + Shadow Grey. It's not perfect, but it does add some definition and it is duplicatable. Along the way of experimenting with what the recess color should be, I mixed up some 987 + Regal Blue + Codex Grey to get a very interesting color. Too blue for this project, but I will certainly use it somewhere else. However, getting back to the subject, I'm not finished with the definition part, as you can see some of the highlights got a little sloppy, so touch up is in order here and there. I may also decide to go a bit darker as well. Thoughts?

2. Touched up the Crux and the eyes.

3. Added some script to break up a few of wide open spaces. I'm still looking for my raggin' fraggin' hole punch with the multiple sizes of punches, so I have not been able to make the template for the Omega symbols yet. I tried using a standard hole punch which worked fine, but the hole was too large to put on the termies shoulder pad. Also, while I am at it, I need to make one for knee pads and the standard power armor shoulder pad.

4. Added some ink and Scorched Brown washes to the end of the assault cannons for "the effect".

So the retinue is getting there. I've probably got two more sessions (I hope) to get them wrapped up and then do the base sand effects. Then I can start a new squad and leverage everything I've learned on this one.

So without further ado...

Very nice work Honda, well done ^_^

The new work on the white side and the litanies on the black side really help bring things out! I still feel the weapon cases need a tad bit of color to give a visual "end" to the black (atm it feels like the black side just keeps running and running along). Assuming you wish to keep to a limited palette, id say either go with a red or even stone colored casing to keep with the colors you have used and that will really help finish up that half of the mini.

Otherwise, you are doing well, keep up the great work :)

I think that is the best summary I can think of why the gun casing needs to be addressed. You are right, the black doesn't have a termination point and consequently, conveys the equivalent of a "run on" sentence. Very good. Expect to see a deep red (maroon-ish) gun casing in their future.

@ben

im thinking of using death watch rules for a whole wolf gaurd army is it worth it

seems very hard

Good question. I think before I answer you completely, you'll have to decide how you are going to play the army.

For myself, this exercise is intended to "bridge" me into my real drop pod army, which has 50 - 60 tacticals and land speeders (5 Tornadoes). So, I know that I'm going to get whacked around a lot by the people I play with. That's Ok, I will have fun with them and prepare myself for the real thing. Also, when the Apocalypse rules come out, I'll have something on the order of 3000 points of Drop Podding goodness to share with those who would oppose the Emperor. So, that's why I'm building this army the way I am.

You on the other hand, have to ask yourself how are you going to play your army? Are you going to be in tournaments? Just friendly games? A mix? The reason I ask is that an all Terminator army has a low body count (25-30). An all Deathwing Wolf Guard army, though individually quite nasty, will have even fewer boots on the ground. So who are your regular enemies, er, opponents going to be? Any of them going to be Ork? I played a Feral Ork army this week and he had 180 guys and THREE of those giant Squiggoths. Against an army like that, 25 guys would have been wiped out by Turn 2. No Orks? How about someone with a lot of power weapons? Those armies I am talking about that take your super elite, low body count army and turn it into hash by the end of Turn 2, maybe Turn 3 if your really good because you don't have enough troops to ever make mistakes or lose combats.

Now does that mean that you can't win with an all termie army? Not in the least. Just keep in mind that in some scenarios, you will be handicapping yourself. If you can go into a game with that understanding and still have a good time (along with your opponent), then no worries. Go with it and have fun with the army. If you tend to find your competitive juices getting the better of you every now and then, you might consider a slightly more balanced force.
