The drop pods look good but maybe a bit more detail would improve their look.

I guess I wasn't very clear on that. The drop pods are still works in progress. I need to put the red on the omega symbols, some purity litanies here and there...and probably something else.

So no worries, I'm not calling them done yet.

OK, so I like the drop pods.

I would like to see engines of some sort on them somewhere, if that is possible...

I think the Omega symbols are a nice touch.

I am very curious to see what they look like when they are all done.

Hey! (Texan for "Howdy")

I finished 8 out of the 15 scouts. I'm not sure this works. There are times that it looks Ok to me and then others...well, you know. We can always do better. :teehee:

Sooo....without further ado...

Thanx for the positive feedback on the scouts. I like how they turned out. However, the helmets may end up being a point of contention. Some GW staff will feel that it doesn't strictly follow accepted practice.

I still stand by the fact that you've got to be out of your mind not to wear a helmet in the 41st millenium, and it fits my army fluff, so I'm going to continue the practice. So, take heed, if you should follow in these footsteps, beware that some may judge you a little more critically. I entered these guys in a painting contest today and came close, but the fact that the scouts were wearing helmets was mentioned. <shrug> No biggee, they shall go forth and slay enemies in the Emperor's name, unheralded.

Now, if breaking the rules *cough* Space Wolves *cough* appeals to you, by all means, jump in with both feet. :)

Cool stuff, although I personally don't like space marine helmeted scouts, I think you've painted them nicely, so it doesn't matter.

Anyways, wonderful camo scheme you've got there.

The one thing that bothers me however is the glowing eye lense effect you've done. It looks nice, but you've painted it slightly wrong. The eyebrow part of the helmet shouldn't have any light on it - the eye lense is sunken underneath it, no light from the lense would hit that part. All the light would hit the underneath of the rim. If you corrected that it would look miles better in my opinion.

uhhh even recessed it would still get reflection..alebeit a 2ndary one, if u used only your 1st wash and not the next 2 or 3 on the hi side it would be slightly more 'realistic'

i love scouts in helmets...if i didnt already have 16 of the old ones id get the plastics and have done the same...great cloaks! extreme hilites are a lil extreme IMO but the overall effect is A+, im sure on teh table these guys really POP!!!

Secondary reflection is possible. It would be a lot lighter though.

Quite coincidentally, I was looking at the eyes this morning and came to the same conclusion. So, I have removed the glow on the "eyebrows" and it only reflects below the ridge. I think I made an assumption (based on what I did for the terminators) while I was working on the eyes over the past couple of days and didn't really think about what I was doing.

Great minds... :P

I'll post some of the newer guys in my next session also with a few of these guys to show the difference. Removing the eyebrow glow really makes them look nastier, more deadly.

Thanx again for the feedback.

Phew! Just barely got this update in. It's amazing how dependent you get on having one little thing available (i.e. the camera) in order to keep the show going. <_<

This week I've finished up the last five scouts which will fill out my two scout units. For the most part, I like how they turned out. They seem to have captured the "dark hunters" theme visually, which is the role that I have created for them.

So without further ado...

I think the drop pods looks great the way they are right now. The only detail that you might want to consider would be some sort of weathering on the pods. Most of the weathering would be scorch marks from re-entry plus some wear and tear on the pods.

Realistically drop pods should not have too many external pieces that stick out. When the pod enters the atmosphere the external pieces would probably burn off or suffer some sort of heat damage. That's why the Space Shuttle have very few pieces sticking out. Even the pieces that sticks out have some sort of heat shielding on the leading surface and minimal heat shield on the rest. Even the shuttle doesn't replace all the tiles after each mission. They only replace the ones that are damaged. The tiles look like a patch work of new and old pieces and some are even different color from constant use.

Now it is time for the Big Dogs...

First off the bases for my dreads. These took a bit longer than expected, but since the dreads are going to be eye magnets I decided to invest a little bit into them.

Base 1

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/Omegawing-WIP21003.jpg

Base 2

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/Omegawing-WIP21004.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/Omegawing-WIP21005.jpg

Base 3

I spent a fair bit of time on this base because I want to do something a little extra. I don't mind that the other two dreads will be standing flat footed, but I did want one of the dreads to be in a more heroic pose, blazing away with his assault cannon. So this base has a fallen column on it and I will be chopping up the legs a bit so that the left foot is planted up on the column and the right is on the ground. I haven't tried to put the model to the base yet, so I'm not sure it will work, but that is the image I have in my head for the moment.

In looking at some of the recent freeway construction in Houston (like what else do you do when you're sitting in traffic), I was struck by the amount of rebar sticking out of the big concrete chunks, so I worked some of that in.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/Omegawing-WIP21009.jpg

The first dread

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Apocalypse%20Lords/Dreadnoughts/Omegawing-WIP21011.jpg

Nothing that spectacular about him. I'm going to add some plastic card around the sides of the body and after I get the other two built, I'll finish up with bling on them. I don't want to go overboard at this point. So, I'll make sure I post some pre-paint shots.

As an aside, I took my termies and scouts for a ride last Wednesday (1500 pts), borrowing a friends three dreads and we did wreak some havoc on a very fast foot Eldar list with lots of guns and stuff that minimize the my +2 armor. The short of it was that the good guys (us ;) ) wiped the xenos scum off the table. Now some of that was due to an amazing number of saves, but it still was nice to see the ladz do good.

Memorable events:

One termie squad getting shot to pieces by Fire Dragons, losing four troopers. The Sgt, (power weapon/storm bolter) then gets charged by a Storm Guardian squad. Amazingly, the Sgt. holds on for four rounds of assault, eventually causes the guardians to flee who get caught in a cross fire by the dreads and are wiped out. Very nice.

One scout squad was wiped out (though not before shooting around 5 Howling Banshees), but the other squad held off an assault by the same Storm Guardian squad, eventually wiped them out in hand to hand (pretty much using their sniper rifles as clubs and braining them), then putting a krak missile into the left ear of the last Eldar on the table, a Swooping Hawk exarch.

Another termie squad losing two troopers to Fire Dragons, then in an assault by another Storm Guardian unit (he had five of the monsters), the remaining Sgt (twin lightning claws) and trooper with an assault cannon lasting through five rounds of combat to wipe out the guardian unit. Very nice.

Of course the other side of the coin is that in another recent 1000 pt game, nearly getting completely wiped out by a mech Eldar list as my termies only dropped in one per turn, which made it a little difficult.

Still very fun games.

The Saturday Comic:

Planned activities for this week are finish the other two dreads, base coat them, then get the brushes going again. All three will field the split white/black scheme of the termies.

Until next time...

i like the 1st and 3rd bases, but the second one with the floor, it just seems to stick out

@MG, Understood that it may not be your cup of tea. My intent is to prevent a uniformity from creeping into the basing. Assuming that these guys would be moving all over a city, then all sorts of "base" material would be encountered.

Part of the plan is to not have everyone on the same base, but to have certain "themes" for the base material to show up here and there, that way there is a link of sorts that will tie everyone together. At least that is the plan, time will tell as to whether or not I pull that off.

Another example where this asymmetrical base effect is used:

Anyway, thanx for taking a look.

Alrighty then.

I like the bases. I agree with the keeping it in theme. I did the same thing with my Court of the Young King and so long as the colors are close together, they will all tie in together nicely.

An idea for the dreads. I am rather intrigued by the addition of plastic plates to the dreads and and Idea came to mind. Is it possible to get some card thin enough to shape into Terminator style plates on the "thigh" region of the dreads. It would look immensely cool I think and convey a very heavy " we mean business" kind of feel to the dreads. And then add the little plates where the hip attaches to the pelvis of the dread. I dunno for sure, but I am feeling some positive vibes for this idea that it will carry over very well with what you have.

Another thing is to possible add little sheild plates at the creases/grooves for the dread arms, like to partially cover the joint from torso to arm. Not so sure about that I think with a piece of paper and a sharp knif you could get a proxy up and see if you like it or not. I think it is worth a look.

On the heroic dread. What may be really neat, and a huge pain in the rear as well, is to cut and re-position the dread feet so they conform to the pillar or some raised thing for the dread to have a raised leg and the feet conform to whatever the leg is one.

I have some little wood blocks I can toss your way if you want, they are not too big and may be good for a buildup of some sort.

Another thing that may look cool is to use a regulat termie head in the sarcophagus section of the dread to look a little more like the Forgeworld ones. I would paper proxy that too before cutting any odd bits in half to make them fit. Might look ok, might look stupid as all get out. Just a thought.

Anyhoo, keep it up. I am follwoing your train of thought and I think I see the caboose coming round the corner.

I probably should mention that I left the leg armor off so that I could put some detail painting on them. Same with the arms, they are in the photo, but I haven't glued them yet as I will base coat them separately, then attach at the right moment.

Interesting thought, but I'm going to stay away from the "knight-ish" look and go more utilitarian and pragmatic. It's just me.

<takes two fingers and points at my eyes, then points at your eyes with the same fingers> Totally agree and planned on doing that from the beginning. Besides, it's hard to be "heroic" if your toes are stiff. :P

Hmm...this is a very "intriguing" idea...very interesting. I will definitely be looking into that.

I saw the scouts in the HoH and didnt notice your name on them, so I shall leave praise here. AMAZING! They look exactly like scouts should, not all bright and stuff. I'm going to throw my lot in with the "paint the asscans red" crowd, the black looks unfinished IMHO. Another suggestion, any chance that you might do the splitscheme on your pods?

I'm going to throw my lot in with the "paint the asscans red" crowd, the black looks unfinished IMHO.

I know where you guys are coming from and all I'm not going to say "yes" or "no" at this point. After all the troopers are finished, they may just stick out so much that I do have to come back to them. When I get to the tactical squads, they will all have red casings on their bolters, so it's sort of obvious that I'm putting myself in a position where I will have to do something.

Personally, I not convinced yet that I need to, but I am withholding judgement. For the time being I am focusing on moving forward and getting the rest of the list completed.

But I do hear all of you and your points are noted.

Another suggestion, any chance that you might do the splitscheme on your pods?

Thought about it long and hard, but in the end I went for a solid black (I suppose I should post some pictures of the final product). Part of the reasoning is that if I dip into reality just a little bit, it is a little harder for guys who are using confusion and darkness to mask their activities, when their "rides" are done up in a bright color. In looking at them in their current state, they need a little something, so I am most likely going to add some re-entry burn marks to them, just to help them stand out a little bit.

Now having said that, I have three more big pods to do (3 for dreads, 3 for termies), so I may just consider doing them half and half. It is an intriguing idea, but also one that I didn't want to slow down the overall progress of the army. As it was, I got them all done in around 3 hours.

Very good feedback though, thanx for taking the time.

Oh, and I'm glad you like the scouts, they may not be "tournament" list enhancers, but I have had a lot of fun with them in their first couple of games, so I see them hanging around for a long time. Plus, they are a key component from a fluff perspective.

Note to self: Four AM is a bad time to run out of glue...

In spite of the aforementioned handicap, progress was made. However, intrigued by the idea that Gar brought up in his post, I ended up spending more time on the body than I had originally intended. That being said, I seem to have created a FW wannabe body and it doesn't look half bad.

The lower body construction will start this week. If all goes according to plan, that then means the base coat and initial coats of paint will slip to either later next week or the week following. I'll just have to see. I don't think that the conversion/construction of the lower body will take an extreme amount of time, but then, I haven't done it yet either.

So without further ado, here are the WIP shots of the upper torso and arms. All C&C greatly appreciated.

Rule No. 1: Measure twice, cut once

It's a simple rule. Every journeyman carpenter knows it. Did I follow my own advice? No, and I paid for the mistake.

So remember kids, measure twice, cut once. Years from now, you'll thank me.

Ok, the dreads are all put together, I basecoated them black, then applied my blackish scorched brown wash to soften the black and noticed that it was too brown, so...I got the opportunity to do it multiple times...which is great, because I just love doing things more than once. :D

Here are the pre-basecoated shots, starting with the "heroic" guy. You will notice the extensive use of plastic bits to widen the pelvis. It would be great to say that I had this magnificent vision of the dread stomping through the table and in the vision he had this broad, solid pose that intimidated all his opponents...but that's not what happened.

I only measured once, secured the feet to the base and then as I had cut the rest of the legs up and was attempting to put it all together, the horrible truth leapt out. So major fiddling was in store to get the legs to fit to the feet and pretend like they were designed that way. So as far as rescue efforts go, the end result isn't too bad.
