Two's Companies!

Recommended Posts

Okay, I got back home today and so here's two models I've continued to work on - my Ultramarine Deathwatch/Sternguard Marine, and my Captain, Anteas.

First up, the Deathwatch guy:

I've kept Chronus's pistol arm, because I was really a huge fan of the wrist-plates in his armour. Though the conversion was a little more difficult because I wanted to keep most of the model undamaged, I've at least now got him into a pretty decent state. He needs some green-stuffing on his bolter arm, but I'm going to move on to the other models in his squad.

On to Anteas:

His sword-arm's skittered away into the undergrowth in my room, so I'm looking for it, but in the meantime I've started to assemble his backpack.

I really liked the stylised eagle-head on Lysander's hammer, so I'm using it as I think it's a distinctive and unusual effect. I've got another Lysander (somewhere) so I'll dig that out so he can have matching vents.

More news soon, I hope! :)

They're looking good! That back-banner is a good choice for Anteas; it adds to the dynamism of the pose.

The Deathwatch guy is also coming along well. The helmet is perfect for that armour.

I like that banner because it's about the only sculpted one that's blowing off to the right. I'm considering trying to manipulate it a little more with pliers so it matches the motion of his tabard. I'll give that some thought.

Thanks for the comment! :)

EDIT:

I've started working on the next member of my Deathwatch Sternguard, a Blood Angel. I've got one of the metal Death Company models. I've started fiddling around with it, and I'll be changing the bolt pistol for a bolter. The arm isn't glued, which is why it's at the funny angle:

And here he is with the Ultramarine. The comment previously about the Ultramarine just pointing and telling others what to do amused me. I'm going to be using the (body of the) Games Day model with the hammer as one of the kill-team members, though I haven't decided which Chapter he'll be from. I'm still working on narrowing down the Chapters that'll be in the squad.

Thanks! I've got a few more shots of Anteas and some of the Deathwatch I've been working on -

Here's Anteas, with weapon arms and (placeholder) shoulderpads.

Onto the Deathwatch, at the moment I have five in stages of assembly - Ultramarine, Blood Angel, Lamenter, Black Templar and Sword Bearer. I have plans for others, including a Mortifactor, but those'll come in time.

Here's my Lamenter - I've used the Commander shoulderpad with the circle, so it'll be relatively easy to do the Chapter badge.

Here's the Templar, pretty stock, but flying the flag for the Chapter with Templar symbols on his chest AND tabard.

This is the Sword Bearer. It's difficult to photograph him because of his pose - it's easier to grasp it in real life. The games day model, with a bolter arm from the Master of Recruits. At least, I think he's a sword bearer - if Midian doesn't like the model, I'll put a different shoulderpad on him. :D

Very nice, the arm goes really well with that body.

The movement you've got with Anteas is spot on. ;)

the last model has a nice sense of movement to it, but whats gonna go in the other arm?

I'm thinking something like this:

Nice.

One thing i'd do is rotate the hand a little so the palm is facing further up, it should have a lot more movement that way, especially if the head is looking in the direction he's going to throw the grenade.

Ideally I would've just liked to have a clenched fist, to show him sprinting flat-out at the enemy. If I do that, I might just shave off the top of the grenade. But yes, I'll probably fiddle around with it and put it into more of a throwing position. In truth, I've never really liked that grenade arm - I've never really been able to put it in a dynamic enough position.

I had idly fiddled around and come up with this:

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z121/mnesimache/Castigator%20Army/Deathwatch-11.jpg

But it's not really optimal in a sternguard squad - I'd want to give the Sergeant a fist instead. Still, it looked neat so I thought I'd put it up. :P

Hmm, not sure about the sword or fist, they don't seem to have the same movement as the grenade arm.

If you'd rather not give him a ccw, i'd be tempted to use a straight right arm swinging backwards. The only place I can think of that has a straight right arm is the commander sprue, then add a chainsword hand with the sword cut away for the clenched fist, that'd have tons of movement.

Are you decided about normal hand vs powerfist? For what its worth I vote powerfist.

Or is this model not the sergeant? It sure looks like a sergeant.

Perhaps I'm muddying the waters a little, but have you considered the right arm of the previous Sicarius model? It'd be a bit of cutting and GS repair work. If you're decided that it needs to be a fist, the lightning claw is only a few short steps away from becoming one.

Also, the old metal standard bearer (and the wolfguard version) gripped his banner pole with a right-handed clenched powerfist. I've used that bit before in a similar position. It's a little small, but has old-school charm.

For clenched-non-powerfist right hands you might look at:

The standard bearer arm from the command squad box

The poweraxe arm from the assault squad box

The grenade hand has been mentioned - could work with a different arm from wrist up

The old (rubbish) vindicator commander had a flat right hand that *might* work, with an equal chance of sucking

The plastic AoBR captain's sword hand could be interesting if you bored out the swordhilt (shame I know, but unique)

Having said all of that, if you're up to it you could greenstuff a fist. You could even coil some 1mm wire 4 times around an appropriate prop (toothpick?) to make an armature for greenstuffing over. You'd want softish wire for that or else it'll drive you mad.

Thanks for the response, Alex, but I'm more inclined to accept Midian's ideas. After giving it some thought, I don't want to give this guy a power fist - if I do have a fist in this Sternguard squad, I'll give it to an Imperial Fist, I think.

I've gone with a straightened right arm as Midian suggested and it really does convey the impression of speed. (Of course, my subtly shaky camerawork accentuates that further...)

And I ended up being given a box of Sternguard for free!

Not sure entirely what I'll be doing with these, though they'll be folded into the Castigator Sternguard and the Deathwatch Counts-As-Sternguard.

Much better. When you get the head on make sure it's parallel to the base, you'll get a good charging look to it.

Free Sternguard? Bonus. I'd be inclined to do them all as Castigators, leave the Deathwatch to the plastics, you'll have more room to personalise them to specific chapters.
