That iron warrior is stunning. How did you do the hazard stripes? They look like they must've been gruelling work.

Thanks buddy - it's a far cry from my neat and orderly paint-style. I only ever do this much wear and tear on my Imperial Guard tanks, so it was a fun challenge to show that in a single mini.

The hazard stripes are very easy to do:

Basecoat with chaos black and then paint on the strips in the width you prefer with thinned Iyanden Darksun. Tidy up the lines so you ensure even width with thinned chaos black.

Then do a 1:1 mix of Iyanden Darksun and Golden Yellow and put on a couple of thin layers. Afterwards, finish with three to four thin layers of Golden Yellow.

For weathering, I did a wash around the edges with Devlan Mud followed by two washes of Gryphonne Sephia, with a bit heavier coating - but still only around the edges. I also layered the rust effect into the edges, which was done by three separate washes in the edges of:

Very thinned (milky consistency) Dark Flesh, Bestial Brown and Vermin Brown.

The chipped painting is done with a 1:1 mix of Chaos Black and Scorched Brown, highlighted with Skull White on the edge where the light would fall/shine. Some of the chips where given a more deeper apperance by adding a bit of Chainmail into them, or onto the black areas.

Could you maybe give us a tutorial on the armor?

Certainly!

The armor consists of two colour-scemes:

A Copper/brass hue and a steel-metallic hue.

The Copper/brass areas where painted with the following recipe:

Undercoat: Chaos Black

Undercoat 2: Scorched Brown

Undercoat 3: 1:1:1 Mix of Scorched Brown, Dwarf Bronze and Tin Bitz

Basecoat: 1:1 mix of Dwarf Bronze and Tin Bitz (2-3 thinned layers)

Shade the recesses with a 1:1 mix of Devlan Mud and Chaos Black.

Highlight with a 1:1:1 mix of Dwarf Bronze, Tin Bitz and Mithril Silver.

Highlight 2: a few points were given a spot of pure Mithril Silver.

Verdigris:

Layer 1: Very thinned Hawk Turquoise (watery cosistency)

Layer 2: Very thinned 1:1 mix of Hawk Turquoise and Bleached Bone (watery consistency)

Layer 3: Very thinned 1:1:1 mix of Hawk Turquoise, Bleached Bone and Skull White - used sparingly and only in the center of the areas (watery consistency)

The steel-metallic areas where painted with the following recipe:

Undercoat: Chaos Black

Basecoat: 2 thinned layers of Boltgun Metal

Shade the whole area with multiple layers of Badab Black, a couple of Devlan Mud and Gryphonne Sephia to add nuance as well. Keep shading with layers of wash until you've achieved as dark a look as you want.

Highlight with a very sharp line of Mithril Silver - keep it tidy though, since you need to do a LOT of retouching if you mess up here.

Rust:

Layer 1: Very thinned Scorched Brown (watery consistency)

Layer 2: Very thinned Bestial Brown (watery consistency)

Layer 3: Very thinned Vermin Brown (watery consistency)

Re-touch a couple of highlights where applicable and voila you're done :P

FACEPALM!

I got a hours worth of painting done last night, almost done with my cultist, and all is well. This morning when I went to check on what I did yesterday I saw a bright red paintstroke across said cultists arm....dammit! ^_^

Now I have to redo that plus the finishing touches.

Oh well....

The filthy, chipped, armour lined with verdigris scheme of that Chosen is one of the most effective ways of giving a sense of weight to a power armoured figure that I've ever seen. It's a brilliant match for the model.

@ Schmitt.: Wow, thank you for your kind words! Unlike most of my miniatures, where I have a very precise idea of how I want them to look, what colours to apply and so forth, this was a more organic process, where I altered and adjusted through the process. As such, it was a challenging, but also rewarding in another sense :P

'evening Gents.

It's time for the cultists to step up on the stage! Just finished and ready for your viewing pleasure I present a Chaos Cultist with flamer. I really, really like the look and sculpt of these models. You can go to town with funny details, colors and still get a twisted, dark look.

He's big and badass, with pale, unhealthy looking gene-bulked muscles straight from the iron works, where he's created a crude but terrifying iron mask with the Chaos star as face piece, from which his red, bloodshot eyes shine. Still clad in his worker-clothes, with a thick and worn leather apron, he carries an old PDF flamer jerry-rigged to a couple of industrial fuel tanks.

I deliberately left him on the temporary base, as I still need to buy a bulk load of new bases for my Dark Vengeance miniatures.

Suggestions to what next to paint from the DV box (and in what paint scheme) are very much appreciated.

Argh! Hopefully I won't get terminated for bringing this back up... :wallbash:

Anyhoo, lovely work on the Cultist, I love the weathering on the fuel tanks! As for what you should paint, maybe do some more Cultists? As for the colour scheme, maybe go yellow or purple?

Cheers,

Ludovic

Hey Buddy,

Thanks, I'm glad you like how he turned out!

I'm actually working on an older Space Marine captain metal model I had in my box - he's gonna be good!

Will post a WIP picture later today. Torso and body finished, helmet, right arm, backpack and banner awaits.

Ah, he looks good :) Can't wait to see him finished! What's in the pipeline after that? Some DV stuff or another project?

Cheers,

'evening All,

So, the Space Marine Captain is finished and hereby presented for your viewing pleasure. The base is from Scibor, and rather large and imposing. I kept it in toned down colors and added a lot of weathering powders to dampen it down, so as to not distract unduly from the Captain.

He was a blast to paint and is a mix of several kits, the sword arm coming form the Command Squad frame, the right shoulder pad from the Commander box along with the backpack. The head is from the Ravenwing frame, and is one of the coolest helmets I've seen to date. The body of the model is from the Masters of the Chapter box.

I specifically didn't paint him in any chapter specific colors, as this gave me a bit more reign in regards to how I wanted to paint each part.

Next up is a private, non GW, non marine project that has to be finished before Christmas for a good friend of mine. After that, it's almost January and the Dark Angels release should be right around the corner then - W00T! :-D

I love your colour choice. Let me see;

Vadskaer green, Vadskaer black, Vadskaer bone, Vadskaer red, Vadskaer white. Excellent choices all.

Do you share a palette with Darren Latham or something?

Thanks a lot Buddy! No, although I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Darren during my interview at 'Eavy Metal, I haven't done any close study of his painting style.

However, I do try as much as possible to emulate the 'Eavy Metal style, since I find it extremely visually appealing and also technically challenging.

@ Biohazard & Centurion645: Thanks for the praise - much appreciated! :-)

Now, I've gotten my greasy hands on the new White Dwarf, which by some chance is on sale in 7-Eleven kiosks here in Denmark - WOOP! As a dedicated Dark Angels enthusiast I'm soooo wired up about all the new releases, some of which I saw on display when I was at my GW interview. So cool to finally see them on sale soon. Seriously, this issue of WD will see more use than a young teens first adult-mag

I will of course be buying an obscene amount of new DA goodies, and have started painting a generic DA-blinged Deathwing Termie just to get the paint scheme ready for my Dark Vengeance and soon-to-be-mine Deathwing Command Squad and Deathwing Knights (amongst others).

....okay, enough for now - WiP pics of the termie tomorrow. GOD I hardly wait for January....
