Lamenter's Actual Scale Space Marines

I love seeing bad@$$ conversions. You have definitely swung for the fences with these. The Vanguard marine is a favorite of mine, especially in the "true scale" department. How do you get your GS so smooth? Is it a scraping and shaping process after curing? Or is it acheived during the sculpting?

I go for as smooth a finish as I can during sculpting. I've found using a very fine grade of wet&dry paper when it's cured helps a bit too. I'm now going to start experimenting with other putties to see if I can get a better finish as I still feel there's too many imperfections present.

The most helpful thing with getting a smooth finish is a variety of clay shapers, especially soft tip ones. Definitely worth the investment if you want to do any of this kind of work.

i have color shapers, but have been at a loss to implement them. I have a crap load of termies, so I will be giving a TS marine a try.

I'm in the process of making a tutorial for basic truescaling if that's any help. About 2 weeks I think before it'll be ready.

Taking a while to finish these (mostly because I've been lazy) but here's a little progress. Most of the greenstuff work is now done. The shoulder pads are ready and waiting as are the backpacks. Just got to finish cleaning and posing the arms, attach the weapons and add those damn rivets :cries:

A nice start. The Superman-style Spandex Pants vibe I am getting is not too positive, but I trust you know what your doing.

Also; did the client see the light that is correctly portioned arms? I see arms, and they ain't skinny shrimpy ones.

Haha, no spandex, not yet anyway. When the detailing is added (cables/studs/etc) they should look more appropriate.

And yes chunky arms are in this season.

If I pull my finger out I might get this squad finished tomorrow.

Anyhow, update for you.

Here's the first of the finished members of the Mark V Tactical Squad. As per the clients orders this model has magnetized swappable arms, so he can be equipped with bolter/bolt pistol and power sword/fist. Still need to drill out the bolter and perhaps add a back banner. Also for your viewing pleasure I have one of the near completion marines from the same squad. The dagger (not entirely WYSIWYG, but looks pretty cool) is from a Catachan command squad (I think). I've tried to pose him as if he's firing at close range, hence the slightly lowered bolter, with his combat blade ready to slash out at the approaching enemy. I also swapped out the magazine on the bolter for a belt feed, as these marines are meant to be heresy era.

i'm not diggin the Giant Space Marine huggies.

I want Power Armor Pants! Not Marine Diapers!

Although you should see about decreasing the size of those groins. I'm sure the Marine's can hold it till the Servitors arrive :D

You do realise they're in Mark V armour right?

They're supposed to be big.

;)

the thighs look too chunky imo

the way the wires hang look great , and i think that the multimelta would look a bit more balanced if it had a stock or just a small extension - the true scaling makes it seem a bit small

i have to say that always keeping the helmets on the belt is a nice touch, and the rivets are really accurate amd precise

and this guy is just too cool:

he smokes of bloody execution, with the added touch of posing :P

I hadn't thought of that. I may well add one.

Something to bear in mind for future Devastators as well.

Cheers.

I finally finished the second Mark V squad I've been working on, this time using terminator arms. I won't post all the individual pics here, but they are on my website (see sig.). Now that this squad is finished I'll be moving swiftly onto the next projects - Alpha Legion, Terminators and Deathwatch (plus a few regular scale projects, but I won't put those in this plog).

(note: the client has his own left shoulder pads, hence the absense of them in these photos)

Someone asked for a size comparison photo, so here you go. Click for larger image.

As suggested (cheers wiplash), I added a stock to the multi melta taken from a plasma gun. I really like the way it looks, and I think I'll be using this again.

quick question... where do you get your non GS rivets

Grandt Line Rivets.

I get them here: http://www.barrule.com/Workshop/scratch%20...gmentables.html

and here: http://www.sbmodels.net/Grandt_Line.html

I think they're imported from the US, so they're probably easier to find Stateside.

They're skillfully done, so don't take this wrong, but your proportions are off in your torso and groin, and the thighs to a lesser extent. The abdomen, especially illustrated in your powerfist marine, is too long, And I don't think the general sink inwards then filling out to be almost even w/ chest straps help that. In fact, it might be the majority source for the length issues.

I'm sorry, but MK V or MK whatever, that groin, to me, is simply too large. When it over powers the shin and chest armor almost in terms of size, that's a bit more than my mind can feasibly believe. It's the one big thing that keeps me from truly giving these guys the un-faulting phase some of our fellows have.

the thights mainly, as others have said, just look chunky... Overall each individual part is done well, but when they're together, they clash and don't synch.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree with some of what you say. You're right the proportions are off, but these aren't intended as Truescale conversions. I'm not skilled enough to even think about attempting real truescaling. And to be honest I don't like truescale miniatures. These are actual scale, which is more a case of scaling up GWs already distorted (heroic scale) proportions, which I do like by the way.

I have no issue with the groin, but I had to do this comparison against pics of GWs Mark Vs to prove it to myself though.

As for your other points, thanks. Though I don't understand what you mean by clash/don't sync. Can you elaborate?
