The Tyrant Rises - Update 5/18/15 - Tac Marines Done

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys!

Ditto from me on Heinrich's thoughts.

I didn't think it could get better than your Astral Claws, but it most certainly does. So killer. Great composition and the paint work is flawless. An army of Corsairs from you would be an even bigger treat, dude.Twhistling.gif

I don't think I have the time or money to make an army of these guys sadly. Though maybe when the new Chaos sets comes out I'll add some allies on to my Death Guard.

Gotta echo the above sentiments, that guy is amazing!

Do i spy a Marine Errant trophy helmet? Haha.

Why yes, yes you do... smile.png

Ok, the red recipe:

Basecoat Khorne Red

Begin shading by mixing in some Dark Flesh and blending towards the bottoms of the red plates. I would say I covered about half of each plate with this mix.

Then I added in some Rhinox Hide to the previous mix and blended even lower. So I was keeping this all very watery so I could control the blend, it wasn't really a step 1 step 2 step 3 process. You may need to go back and forth a bit to get what you want.

I then lined all of the armor plate with Agrax Earthshade.

I then started highlighting by mixing in Ushabti Bone with the Khorne Red, I did a slight blend near the top but for the most part I did line highlighting with this. I think I did 2 or 3 versions of this, getting lighter each time.

I went lighter then I normally would with my last highlight because I used Bloodletter Red to glaze the whole thing at the end.

Hope that helps.

Just promoting my new post in Hall of Honor for my Sons of Dorn. I am getting rid of them and this is the first time I have taken pictures of all of them. I know that Hall of Honor gets a lot less traffic then the WIP forum, so thought this might help. Thanks!

They are my original Space Marine army from when I was 16ish. (well my FIRST army were Ultramarines from when I was like 10, but lets forget that painting travesty for right now.)

Would you mind doing a detailed walkthrough painting your Astral Claws? Especially for those fool out there who have an unpainted army and are major fans of the Astral Claws and your work...

Totally not for my sake...

Thanks for all the comments while I've been away. I have been working on my Tomb Kings since I have really been drawn to Fantasy on the gaming side of things lately. I was also putting a bunch of time into working on my Golden Demon entry (also a Tomb King model) before I found out it was cancelled, was in Europe for a month and am planning a wedding. Whew, oh, and I moved across the country. So yeah, nothing new for my Claws unfortunately.

But I do have this for you, his large scenic base still needs to be finished, and its about half done, but the main man himself is finished.

And an artsy black and white one, I like it a lot, I feel like it shows off the smoothness of the paint.

I took all of those with my iPhone so not the best quality. I will get real ones taken once the scenic base is done as well and put it in the hall of honor.

So not Corsair or Claw related, but just showing that I'm still working on marine stuff.

I really enjoyed painting the Death Guard he is stomping on as well.

One down, 3 more to go. I have Fulgrim, Ferrus and Mortarion. Morty is assembled and ready to go next but I am debating on whether I should sculpt a breathing mask around his lower face so he is closer to how he looks in the artwork.

Thoughts?

Thanks everyone!

The Death Guard was painted using Menoth White Base, Menoth White Highlight by P3, Chardon Granite (still have a pot, I'll die when I run out sad.png ) and Pure White by Reaper.

The main color is somewhere between the Menoth Base and Highlight, the Chardon is used for the crevices and the shadows and the white was only for the final line highlight. The Base is more creamy while the Highlight is closer to white, so I wanted it to be kind of Ivory but not to much, there was lots of wet blending and going back and forth till I was happy with it.

The paint chips are Chardon Granite and the rust streaks are a combination of the new color for Vermin Brown ( I forget the name) and Typhus Corrosion.

The green is Castellan Green with Rhinox Hide Brown used as a shade, lots of mixing there too.

Hope that helps.

First of all, welcome back Nurgling, its good to see you around again.

A that Angron is amazing, the bronze in particular caught my eye. Would you mind sharing how you painted it? All around its a great piece of work of one of my favorite primarch sculpts.

You are easily up there with boltman from times of yore. I'm out of likes to otherwise you would have a few.

Your Angron is beautiful. Like really. But I know that the insanely good painters also like crits. On the back of the axe Gorefather is a red dash of blood (2nd photo). IMO it looks out of place, and I initially thought it was a mistake. Perhaps its the photo.

I also went and had a look at the FW version. Of the two I think yours is better. The skin the tattoo, the armour, the dead guy. All amazing.

I went and checked out your blog as well. Super nice stuff. I particularly like the Feral ork for ages ago you did. and the Badab posters you made.

Thanks for sharing.

Oh man, the Bronze. Funny story, I painted that part several months ago, probably in January. I didn't start working on him again until a few weeks ago and there were a few more brass parts for me to paint, like the scabbard and Butcher's Nails and I couldn't really recall exactly how I did it, but I am about 95% sure this is the recipe.

Basecoat Balthasar Gold

Agrax Earthshade wash

Drybrush/Layer Balthasar Gold/Runefang Steel mix, leaning more towards Balthasar Gold

I used Carroburg Crimson and a Purple wash to shade the brass, maybe Agrax in a few places.

Mix in more Runefang steel for progressive highlights with a final line highlight of pure Runefang.

I go back and forth with my steps to get the results I need so its hard to give a step by step. The key to why it looks different then most is the crimson and purple washes to shade it.

Hope that helps a bit.

Yogi: Thanks! The blood on the back was on purpose, the metal just looked to plain to me, but maybe I'll go back in and adjust it. I always appreciate any type of feedback on how to improve my stuff so keep it coming. :)
