Carcharadons

Recommended Posts

I apologize if this has been asked and answered before but could you tell me your recipe for painting the white portion of the helmets? I re-read every page of this topic twice and I can't seem to find it. I am currently getting ready to lay sown some paint on my first squad of Carcharodons which are heavily inspired by your outstanding work. I am also going to try your grey recipe if you don't mind, yours is such a good match to IA 10 that I feel that it would be the gravest heresy to paint them any other way than yours. I can think of no other way to praise your work than to try my best to duplicate it myself. Thanks for the massive boost of inspiration and for sharing your work with us.
I love the Red Scorp, great work as usual Machinepriest! If you want to mix things up abit then how about as a treat everytime you do some Carcharodons, you paint a marine from each of the chapters; form the badab war. That why you could have a variety of paint jobs/ miniatures to paint and it could also open up new modelling oppertunites. *cough*Salalamanderlizardskin*cough*

Quick Update.

HAPPY TIMES!

I finally received my decals and my Contemptor Dreadnought today.

So I've been busy applying decals all day.

No the easiest decals I've worked with, but with some cutting they conform to the shoulder pads better.

I'll probably post some photos tomorrow

If you are having trouble getting the transfers to lay down, try mircosol and microset. If you haven't already heard about that stuff. Use Vinager in a pinch. Plenty of tutorials on these forums on how to use the stuff.

I used to have the worst time with transfers until I discovered the stuff, would rather hand paint than use a transfer. Now transfers are so easy to use. works great.

Cant wait to see a squad with the shark symbols on them. Maybe a vehicle in the near future?

@Brother Mord: Double post lag brother :) As an aside I just bought some Micro Sol and Micro Set as I have had problems with the FW tactical markings decals. Now I have looked in the Librarium here and used the search engine but I can't seem to find a specific tutorial for their use. Was the information buried in somones painting blog thread or another topic?

@Machinepriest: Whither decaled sharky goodness?

@Kurgan the Lurker: I meant why hasn't he stopped swearing at his FW decals and shown us his lovliness yet mate :o To be fair using a world like "whither" was never going to be an effective start to written communication, not in this millenium anyway ;)

@Brother Mord: Ignore me, I found a site on the tinterweb at Oz Marshal Miniatures that sorted me out. Thanks for the heads up though, it does the bizniz. And there was much rejoicing :)

@Macinepriest: Brother Mord is right mate, it is amazing stuff and sorted out the FW decals I have as well as my own home printed, even with me having had to varnish seal them. Best £6 (£3 for each pot) I have spent this week, startling stuff. I didn't swear once during use :) Of course I believe in redundancy in depth so I got a box of each to be safe for future proofing, so it ended up being a wee bit more than 6 quid. If the transfers/decals are still being a bugger it should take the bite out of using them.

Still a fantastic job, hope to see some more coming !

BUT on second though and third and even more, I really don't stick to the gold studs at all... Keep them grey / black or give them a metallic tone but gold doesn't fit IMHO (its ok and we're used to it for amo casing but not for the studs).

Same thing about the red dot on the corvus helm, a bit too flashy too me, a very pale blue-grey maybe or unsaturated red.

The MkIII is splendid !

Got the Scorpion decal sorted.

Marius Perdo is being awesome and sending some over :HQ:

As for Micro Set and Micro Sol, I'm an avid user of these products and they definitely help.

But with the shark icons I find that I have to give them a couple of fine cuts for them to conform without wrinkling.

In the end, it doesn't really matter since I go over the decals with black paint to simulate wear and tear.

Every model has their decal on now, I just need to varnish them to get rid of the sheen from the previous gloss coat.

I've been busy magnetizing the crap out of my Contemptor Dread, so I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Seriously... Each arm will contain over 15 tiny magnets.

I was even thinking of magnetizing the fingers, but I decided against it.

But the weapons in the hands plus the ammo canisters will be interchangeable.

I just ordered 200 magnets in different sizes from Ebay as I'm running out.

I know what you mean.

I'm not really sold on the gold details either to be honest.

I've been thinking about repainting them in bronze like in Imperial Armour later on, but I haven't decided yet.

Dude, you are totally barking mad. But it's a good kind of insane. :) I love how your Sharks are turning out so far, looking forward to seeing more!

And I thought I had an obsession with magnets, I made an entire 10 man squad with magged arms, torsos heads and a couple guns :D

Got the Scorpion decal sorted.

Marius Perdo is being awesome and sending some over :eek

They haven't arrived yet? I sent them first class recorded delivery. Don't they know who you are?! We'll either have to set the Inquisition on them or my Euro MP. Or both. If we find the person(s) responsible we need to throw them to the sharks. Sharks with frickin' lasers on their heads.

Either that or I can actually go and ask Royal Mail to track it but I think it took up to a week when I sent some stuff first class to Sweden last time (but that was a huge box, not just an envelope).

I should have UPSd it through my company, but the taxman and my accountant might have gotten a little bit upset :)

PS you didn't groan at my "take the bite out of using it" pun. It is at least on par with your getting "stung" over Red Scorpions :)

I'm shipping out soon and will be gone for a couple of months. I hope I get to see your completed squad and a peek at the Contemptor before I go. And maybe another look at Tyberos!

Awesome work! Very inspireing. It's actually got me thinking of switching up from my Black Templars to Carcharodons.

Hello all.

Progress have been very slow lately.

The reason for this is that I'm considering giving up on these guys.

Not sure why and I'm sure it sounds extremely dumb, but after seeing so many other Carcharodon blogs pop up everywhere I kinda lost motivation for the whole project.

Never been a fan of hype and bandwagons, it somehow kills the fun.

I guess it's even weirder that I'm considering picking up my Raven Guard again, a chapter that's way more represented.

I don't know... I kinda lost my spark while working on the Tactical Sergeant and the magnetized heavy weapon Marine both of which took way too long time and caused me a lot of trouble.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but I might just go through with the combined forces idea I had earlier.

Or I might just leave the Carcharodons all together.

As always, thanks for the praise.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO

You are the driver of the bandwagon. You were the first. They sharks looked so cool in IA they deserve some attention.

And to be truthful I have only seen two or three other threads with carcharadons so It's not really like there is a big bandwagon.

Blood Angels and Grey Knights, now those are bandwagons, A codex chapter is not.

From a purely painting aspect as well yours are the best I've seen. So keep at it.

(Besides you owe me some pictures of you models with the shark transfers on them)

That is sad news as you have inspired a lot of people with your work here.

Strangely enough though I had planned Carcharadons myself and even started a WIP thread which got as far as unpainted 10 man tac squad and an assualt squad. I then paused on the idea as I have been building and painting SW for the last 3 years, along with the odd side track into Red Scorpions but the thought of another grey army lost me my motivation somewhat. So everything I'd built plus a speeder that has sat on a shelf built but not painted for some time all got a transfer to Raven Guard ;) Anyway whatever you decide Machinepriest please keep us up to date on your progress :tu:

Do not give up on the charcaradons.. im pretty sure half the reason there is a bandwagon forming is because people saw yours.. plus not being mean to any of the other people out there.. but yours are the best ive seen and the most fitting to the new fluff.. none of this daft cartoony jaws on transports and ott IM A SHARK RAW!!!! stuff.

if for some reason you do decide to give up on them, pick up one of the chapters that people arent doing rather than raven guard.. do some excorcists (i can see you doing them justice after the blood angel) or maybe some sons of medusa.. hell you could join me on the shiny side and be one of the 2 people in the world who do fire angels ;)
