Knowing glory without honor is vain and empty, the older Wolf, tends to the wounds of his younger brothers. Now the spears become travois' as he leans into his harness and begins the trek back to the Thunderhawk.

Dragan felt a little dizzy... well to be true his head was banging as if all the demons of the warp where having a fiesta inside his skull!

 

Shaking it off he let his senses help him... Blast! The beast had them !

He remembered charging alongside Khine toward the south beast, engaging it in close combat, charring with his brother the joy of the hunt… but he remembered know the fury of tentacles that had responded to them. Too many attacks for two young wolves… and a dark and red blanket covering them.

Well… he can smell his pack brothers around him and he can even see know the towering presence of Warhorse watching over them.

He charred a smile with the older wolf. He was in debt know and will take pleasure at saving his blood friend live. “So is the life of a space wolf”, did he thought, “living and dying together, always as brothers and always with honor and courage.”

 

He was battered but already eager for his… their next hunt!

The fall into insanity is known all too well in the heart of the noble son of Sanguinius, many of his friends and battle-brothers collapsed into the abyss of the black rage. Fluttering in the icy wind, a cloak of deep midnight billows from the Night Angel's form as he rests his hand gently on his sword's scabbard. Although Zynk lacked the superior smell and instincts of the Sons of Russ, he more than compensated with his eagle eyed vigilance and quick mind. Patiently crouched on the high ground, Zynk's mind raced to solve the seemingly endless scenarios and possibilities in the fight to come before they came to fruition. - Zynk Kaladin, Grey Hunter (E3)

 

The recent campaigns had been tough, but no true Son of Russ could resist the Hunt. Gone for many years, Wolf Guard Kieran had barely stopped in the Fang in his desire to return to his true home. The cultists had been poor prey, lacking faith in the Emperor and skill at arms in equal amounts...they had been poor prey indeed. Not like the greenskins, who made up in savagery what they lacked in intelligence. Atleast battling them had tested his axe arm.

 

But his Hunt wasnt what he wanted. He had been told, discreetly, to keep an eye on the Chapter's Night Angel guest. A Night Angel, friend of the Wolves and found in the Fang of late, had been granted a singular honor in hunting on Fenris. Little did the Night Angel know that while this was a honor, it was also a test of his warrior skills. Fenris is no friend to fools.

 

As the Talon of Fenris entered the underground ruins, a new scent overwhelmed the perfume of the Night Angel...this scent blanketed the ruins, emerging from everywhere and nowhere. Grasping his weapons tightly, Kieran feels momentarily unsure if he is truely predator or prey here... - Wolf Lord Kieran, Grey Hunter (A2)

i plan to launch myself at the Wulfen in C1, get in CC as fast as possible. (the Wulfen already has the I advantage, so bumping him from a 5 to 6 doesnt bother me much) - Wolf Lord Kieran, Grey Hunter (C1)

 

I shall leap diagonally from my lofty position unto the Wulfen at C1. Hopefully we can give the Emperor's mercy quickly so we can plan our next moves. May Russ and Sanguinius watch over us this day. - Zynk Kaladin, Grey Hunter (C1)

 

ROUND ONE RESULTS: Using the wind to his advantage, Zynk gains an initiative bonus from the wulfen. Zynk strikes simutaniously as the wulfen. While both Kieran and Zynk get into close combat with wulfen. MoTW Zynk lands three attacks, and wounds with three. The wulfen strikes back and lands two blows on Zynk, wounding Zynk with one. Zynk makes his saves. The wulfen makes two saves and fails his last. Zynk gets the first kill and first blood.

@Zynk:I say we back up to A1 while launching projectiles at the Wulfen in C8. hopefully we can make it so we always face the Wulfen 2 on 1. i dont see the wind being a major factor as i dont think we can edge around them and they already have us by 1pt anyway. - Wolf Lord Kieran, Grey Hunter (C3)

ROUND THREE RESULTS: Wulfen move towards the two Grey Hunters. Unable to shoot they lurk closwer towards their prey, growling at the two intruders. Zynk shoots and misses at a wulfen. WLK shoots. He hits and wounds but the wulfen makes its save.

ROUND FOUR RESULTS:

Both Zynk and Kieran unleash a volley at a wulfen, hitting and wounding the beast. Unfortunately the wulfen shrugs off the wound and makes it's saves. Kieran MoTW roll=4, Zynk MoTw roll=3. The Two Grey Hunters rush in and charge at the beast. The Wulfen strikes first. Hitting with four and wounding with three. The two hardened warriors makes their saves. Kieran lands two blows, and Zynk with four. Kieran wounds the wulfen with one, Zynk with two. The wulfen makes it's saves from all but one against Zynks blow. Zynk now has two wulfen kills under his belt!

 

ROUND FIVE RESULTS:

 

The two hunters shoot at the remaining wulfen but fail to land any shots at the beast. They charge in.. Kieran MoTW roll= 5. ZYnk MoTW roll= 1. The wulfen strikes first, landing only one blow and wounding with it. Kieran makes his save. Kieran lands six attacks, with three wounds on the beast. Zynk lands with two and wounds with two. The wulfen makes all it's saves!

 

ROUND SIX RESULTS:

 

Zynk MoTW roll= 6, Kieran MoTW roll = 4. Wulfen strikes first, and wounds with one. Zynk fails his save and is fighting injured. Zynk manages to wound the beast with four, while Kieran with two. For Zynks attack wounds I roll the following (6,6,6,4) Kierans attack wounds I roll the following (5,1). Kieran makes his first kill.

ROUND ONE RESULTS: Vantius hurls rocks at the kodiak, but doesn't land any attacks. (NO INSTRUCTIONS FROM BROTHER SERAPHION) Ice-Bears automatically go after idle user. One ice-bear makes it into close combat. I rolled for counter-attack, fails. MoTW roll 3. I've never rolled four snake eyes before! scary. ice-bear, lands three wounds. Brother Seraphion makes his saves. Someone offline message this guy, or he's bear meat in the next few rounds. Not bad for a guy who's running on auto-pilot.

ROUND TWO RESULTS: The Blood Claw desperately tries to hurl a spear at the killer kodiak slowly approaching at Brother Seraphion from the east. His aim misses. Brother Seraphion, already locked in combat is unable to do anything but fight back at the ice bear. (MoTW roll 3)

 

The ice bear lands three blows at the Grey Hunter, while Seraphion fights back hitting the bear with two of his own. The Grey Hunter lands two wounds on the giant bear, as the warrior eats one wound, making his save. The bear makes his two saves.

 

Round Three weather update: Howling Death: Moving swiftly during an intense storm such as this can bring death. Users that travel more than two tiles on the map must take a Dangerous Terrain test. (If failed, user is stationary for a full turn in their tile)

 

--NOTES--

 

READ THE RULES! 4) Users are allowed to move two tiles in any direction, and assault on their third. Close combat weapons are temporary and are destroyed or left behind as your character moves onto the next tile. You can throw weapons, which counts as your shooting.

 

Shooting Range are as follows:

ROUND THREE RESULTS: MoTW roll = 1. Seraphion and the kodiak face-off swinging at the same time. Kodiak lands two attacks, and the Grey Hunter hits with one. Each combatant land a single wound onto each other. The ferocious ice-bear makes its save. Brother Seraphion fails his (I rolled a 2). The Grey Hunter makes his Ld test and is fighting injured.

 

Vantius rushes in for the rear. Landing two attacks. hitting with one and wounding with one. The ice-bear didn't see the Blood Claw coming as it fails the save. The Blood Claw calms his prize as the two suddendly find themselves nearly surrounded by two kodiaks.

 

Round four weather update: Ice-storms. Shards of ice lash the users, flaying the unfortunate. Every user on the map suffers 1 wound/glancing hit on the roll of a 2+

Brother Seraphion and Vantius shoot at the ice-bear in E4. They both miss. Vantius rushes the bear at E4, while the ice-bear from F6 charges at Seraphion. (NO GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS FROM SERAPHION) The Blood Claw lands four attacks, and wounds with three. The ice-bear answers back with three attacks and three wounds onto Vantius. The Blood Claw makes his saves, the kodiak, saves two and fails one. MoTW roll= 2. Ice-bear lands four attack on the Grey Hunter with three wounds on the man. Seraphion lands three and wounds with two. Ice bear makes it's saves, while the Grey Hunter fails two of his three saves and comes crashing down onto the red snow.

 

ROUND FIVE RESULTS:

 

The Blood Claw throws his spear at the bear and hits firmly. It wounds but the kodiak makes it's save. Vantius rushes in for the beserk charge. The Blood Claw lands three attacks and wounds with one. The kodiak answers, landing two attacks and two wounds. Vantius makes his saves. The kodiak makes his save against the Blood Claws attack.

 

ROUND SIX RESULTS:

 

Kodiak lands three attacks, and two wounds on the Blood Claw. Vantius lands one attack and one wound on the bear. The ice-bear makes it's save, while the Blood Claws makes two and fails one save. Vantius is now fighting injured.

 

ROUND SEVEN RESULTS:

 

Vantius unable to hit the kodiak is helpless to the onslaught. The bear strikes and hits the warrior with two attacks, wounding with one. Vantius makes his save.

 

ROUND EIGHT RESULTS:

 

Vantius still feeling the pain unable to hit at the kodiak. The ice-bear retaliates by landing three wounds on the Blood Claw. Vantius makes two saves and fails his last wound. He put up a great fight until the end!

HUNT-MASTER Alright folks this should conclude the first running of the gauntlet. Thank you for your patience and participation. This now the time for discussions in ways to improve or change the rules to better run the gauntlet in the future. Congratulations to those whom met the challenge like a true son of Russ. Your sagas will forever be told in the great halls of the Fang.

Maybe after a kill you get a temporary stat buff? Say have a D12 table of buffs you get to roll on, maybe even have different amounts you get to roll on them depending on the difficulty of the beast. Negative and positive buffs.

Headstrong

Cannot used ranged weapons under any circumstance.

Looking at the now still body laying before him, Kieran feels a rare moment of pity. This beast, but for a quirk of genetics, could have been him. The Call of the Wulfen is ever present inside a Son of Russ, and before him lay its result. Every time he raises his axe for blood, splits the skull of an enemy, howl his anger at the Gods, its is the Wulfen inside of him that gives him the strength to defy these beings.

"This will never be my fate." Kieran promises himself as he begins to collect material for a fire. "Night Angel," he says aloud, "Help me in cremating these creatures and then we'll return to the Aett." Before he can do this, Kieran removes the fangs from the Wulfen Zynk killed. "Take these with you, for you have done what few outsiders can make claim to. You have survived a Fenrisian hunt."

The deed is quickly done, and the Angel and Wolf make their way back to the Aett victorious!

Oh, I see. A pure close-combat class would be pretty interesting.

 

Speaking as an avid watcher of this thread, though, (and hopefully a combatant in the next hunt) I'm all for seeing another playthrough with the rules as they are, if only to make sure there isn't anything that needs ironing out. :P

As the sun sets into the horizon giving slow birth to the night, Zynk stares into the pyre entrapped by the flames as they leaped into the frozen air. The snow around the pyre sizzles softly as Fenris itself offers a prayer for those once tortured souls finally put to rest. The icy wind howled as it blew roughly into the wide tears in his midnight cloak, licking his exposed skin where his gene enhanced body already clotted his wounds. Reflexively he clenches his fist carefully, not daring to let the two large pairs of fangs escape his protective grasp. Zynk silently promised to honor these creatures... these men, in the customs of Fenris, not as an angel that he is, but as the wolf these men deserve.

 

The noble blue eyed Astartes looks to his wolf-brother, Kieran, who's countenance greets the angel with icy determination. Silently, they both nod to each other and set off into the night.

 

Mav, perhaps instead of (or along with) different character types we can introduce different weapons each with different attributes? This might be a crude example, but spears give +1 range to shooting for a single turn, daggers give you 1 single attack at +1 initiative, swords give +1 attack, axes +1 strength, throwing axes give +1 range attack but -1 distance... etc. It might needlessly complicate the game more, though, which is obviously not desirable for the person running it! Just food for thought. Regardless, the game is already awesome as is.

I am a bit confused as to what happens when you fail an armour save. It says in the rules that you are allowed to move away one tile. Would that not mean that my blood claw would then be able to charge a beast and at least have a fighting chance. Why even continue to roll dice for a beast attacking a model that can't strike back?

The way I see it is, it's similar to the inglorious thread. when you fail an armor save, your given a second opportunity by a leadership roll. Pass that test and your fighting with negative modifiers. After all that and you fail one last armour save, your rendered mortally wounded and taken out of play.

 

Also, from what I've seen... kodiaks have the same initiative as both the troop choices. And since you'd be fighting on negative modifiers, so that extra attack from a charge would have been removed anyway. Along with whatever else is changed in your stats because of the "injury" (failed armour save).

Several of the assembled Space Wolves in the taverns of the Fang glanced amusedly at the strange visitor. He was wrapped in a thick fur cloak, under which was visible the quartered sand-brown and sky-blue armour of the Infinity Knights. His name was Ace Debonair, and he was listening to the tales of the hunters intently. So intently, in fact, that he'd forgotten the tankard raised halfway to his mouth.

 

He'd been sent on a mission of penance, to learn how to adapt more quickly to sudden changes on the battlefield. Several of the Infinity Knights' ancient texts cited hunting as a great teacher of adaptability. Several more cited Fenris as the home of many unimaginably deadly creatures. Faced with these facts, Ace had made the decision immediately to come to Fenris and learn the ways of the hunt. He was now beginning to wonder if he shouldn't have read more first.

 

On Fenris, it seemed, everything larger than a spider was apparently both deadly and hostile. In the last ten minutes, he'd heard talk of elks - creatures he'd previously only thought of as prey for other beasts - strong and fierce enough to trample or gore an incautious Space Marine to death.

 

From looking at those who had just returned from their hunts, and the severe wounds many of them now nursed over tankards of ale, some of these experienced warriors had faced even worse perils out in the deep wilderness.

 

And the weather, to a man used to the desert cities of Ashar, was almost intolerably cold. Outside, torrents of snow were being buffeted around by a howling gale as cold as space itself. Worse, he'd heard some of the Space Wolves chatting idly about how mild it had been of late.

 

Ace had expected Fenris to be a challenge from what he'd read. From what he'd seen, though, it looked more like a death sentence.

Different weapons giving bonuses sounds darn cool (I also approve of the use of throwing axes :D ), but it would make the game more complicated for Maverik, if only because he'd then have to keep track of who's got what and apply the appropriate bonuses/penalties every time someone attacked.

 

Maybe just limiting it to two or three different weapons (swords, axes and spears, maybe?) would be the better option?

That seems like a pretty good balance with the weapons. With that setup I'd probably be an axe guy, that re-roll (however often it is) looks like it'd be darn useful. ;)

 

I'm still all for the next hunt running without any changes, though. Gives everyone more time to come up with, debate, and refine ideas, if nothing else. :D

Unfortunately Mav is/has been ill, I can't say much about that, but for now both the Inglorious and Gauntlet threads will need a new Hunt-Master and Tavern Master until Mav gets better. We are both sorry for the delay as life on holy terra have been pretty stressful and hectic in the last month or two.

God it's good to be back says Conan I mean you leave for a few months to bring fenrisian death to a few heretics and they start a great hunt without you. I have heard tales of all your exploits Congragulations to WLK and the Angel maybe you aren't so soft after all. Welcome brother ace I have heard tidings that you come to join us in the next hunt?

 

Also if we do this again can I join in?
