Some small progress on the gold for Dante, have to admit, using washes just highlights all the problems with the sculpt, not to mention my painting skills are incredibly rusty. Ah well. Maybe I'll make another eventually.

less exciting update.

after some discussion on the BA group on facebook, I decided to remove Dante's left shoulderpad, i'll instead be using the one that comes with the sanguinary priest. Hopefully that'll be an improvement, I MAY also swap what was the left shoulder pad to the right pad, but im not sure, i like the exrtra armoured one...

so, whilst i wait for bits to arrive in the post, I decided to do a little work on Dantes Champion. One of the big issues i'm finding, is that i've so many models i've sprayed or done washes on over time, they've gathered dust and getting them clean enough to continue with is incredibly difficult... Anyway, red has been progressed a bit, some shading and some very basic area highlights have been done...

I'm so glad to see this back on the first page. Dante is looking absolutely sick. I like the layered right pad as well, but it may visually clash with the overall streamlined frame of the model. Are you looking to stay true to the original sculpt or are you willing to venture out a bit?

Also, do you have an air compressor? Blasting the model with some pressure may remove most of the dust that's collected over the years without harming the basecoat.

well, Dante (classic model) just has a scroll on the right arm.

My original sculpt for dante had a free hand sanguinius on it (picture below is... hmm 7 years old):

Obviously my more recent Dante had quite bulky shoulderpads, i do think the BA chapter icon from the sanguinary priest is the right way to go for his right shoulder, so perhaps the sanguinius sculpted shoulder pad from his left side would indeed be a better option than whats currently on his right, just a shame, i was pretty pleased with the shading of the gold on it :P

Shouldn't the chapter icon be on his left shoulder? If the right one doesn't match there must be a good one in the DC or SQ kit...

Champion is looking good, what kit is the torso and legs from?

A camera lens brush is another good way to get dust off models.

Dante and that champ are looking good!

(thank you ex- who didn't bother collecting her make-up bag).

Awesome tip although I am wondering what compelled you take a make-up brush to a mini. This is almost like the first person to milk a cow. :)

small update on dante, started working on the new shoulder pads, lots more to do on everything clearly. the white is more or less just white with a couple of glazes currently. Red is just base coloured, as is the gold on the trims. Think it looks better though and slightly more in line with classic models shoulders.

  • 1 month later...

Been playing with what will be a Praetor for when im running my BA as heresy rather than 40k.

Anyone have any thoughts on what i should do for the torso beyond what I have so far? I didnt want to remove the cables because the Solaq model has really nice dynamism.

The arm and head combo is just an option... I think for the head i'll probably do a bare head with long hair flowing in the same direction as the cloak.

I want to add ornamentation to the torso and gorget as noted, but also need to decide on style for the shoulders and arms... Left shoulder pad will PROBABLY be the last of my sanguinary priest shoulder pads.

The left leg will look sort of like the design Sergeant Lorenzo has in space hulk when finished - which i've used on a number of models in this thread already.

Not a fan of the arm/weapon combo posted above-- it looks like he's polishing the pommel of the sword rather than getting ready to swing it.  I think the heavy chainsword mk2 arms from the weapon set forgeworld makes would fit the pose better as the sword and hand are reversed (it would look like an upwards swing that way, like he's aiming up at some gargantuan creature).

As for the helmet/no helmet option-- I vote helmet.

oooooh you're right! that could look cool for a pose, although id need to replace the sword as it just doesnt feel right for a big HQ to have a chain weapon for me...

On to next update...

I've also been working on some extra vanguard marines, for the most part i've kept them reasonably under equipped, this is because the vanguard i currently have built all have specialist melee weapons on grav pistols. It also means I can use these as regular assault marines in a heresy game if i desperately want to (although tbh, I dont exactly have a shortage of assault marines).

As well as these, I've been working on Dante's Honour guard (rebased them, started getting the shading of the armour done, and base coloured the faces (plus an initial level of shading) and started on the golds)

Oh wow, that Praetor looks fantastic! I really love the pose, looks proper heroic. Makes me wish GeeDubs would just let me buy that Captain Solaq on it's own, aside from that awful Dr Robotnik moustache helmet it's a really cool looking model (get choice for a replacement btw), but not enough to justify buying the entire Strike Force pack to get it.

Also, if you want an alternate weapon why not try the mid-unsheathing sword arm set from the MK.3 Command Set Champion?

SanguiniusRebort, I actually used that sword and sheath arm on a sergeant with a cloak thats running forward. Lovely arm but i doubt i'll buy that kit again so sadly a no go...

however, i was thinking maybe something like this?

(Blobs of GS used to hold everything in place...)
