Ultramarines 1st Company project

I would leave the square, and put the crux somewhere else. The banner of the first company should show the crux. Maybe in one of the upper corners, or into the Ultramarine symbol.

Insignia aside, the banner is truly fantastic. The NMM gold is really cool, as well as the scripture. I find it wary hard to paint scripture, but yours is awesome.

Thanks, I'll might see what a small one to the right of the I looks like with a small skull to the left.

For the script I used a 005 picma micron pen and then washed it in lahmian medium to seal it and matt it down

I tried to work with a micro pen once. A total disaster. It did not stick to the previous layers of paint. I could rub it off with my fingers. I was not smart enough to try it with matt medium thoughwallbash.gif

Thanks for the tip ! I will try that out in the future thanks.gif

Batu, if you are using a micron pen only run the brush with lahmian medium over it once. With mine the medium reactivates the ink and if you did any kind of second pass or tidy up then it smeared the ink. What I found was load the brush (in this case a wash brush) pass over it once then let it dry. If you miss any just do it again.  The only other tip I can give is when writing the lettering I always start with the middle letter and work outwards. This really helps with the spacing so in this case I did the M then worked out one letter at a time from this.

Anyway heres tonights update. Ive finished the head, fixed the 1st company numeral, added a crux and completed the base

The mini will be weathered into the base once its attached

Well that took a little longer than I planned!

The banners done so heres a shot of it in place with the rest of my first company.

Ive a few more MkIIs to finish and a recon squad but Ive already put my order in for the new sternguards.

Ignoring fluff what colours would you paint the recon squad of the first division. White helmets on a covert squad may look odd but they do have camo cloaks. I dont know if they would look good in a very dark (almost black) blue or just paint them like the rest of the squad but with a cloak.

Thanks for the great comments.

Ive started work on the recon squad.

Ive base coated this one but couldnt resist doing the head.

My only dilemma is what to do with the camo cloak.

Im open to opinions here. Do I paint it plain black or grey go for a more standard camo?

The only other camo I might try is one of the digital camo patterns but I dont think that will turn out well on such a small area

I'm a big fan of black / grey camo, but a grey / green would match your bases (and therefore make some sense if the cloaks were adapted to the environment...).

Excellent minis by the way, I'm liking the 'at ease' look, rather than mid battle - and the painting is exquisite. Looking forward to seeing more.

WOW this is amazing, especially as an Ultramarines collector this is bloody fantastic!

Tell me brother how do you make those bases they are awesome?

Also where you get the cool recon backpacks and stuff, all FW?

Will be keeping an eye on this.

To make the bases Ive got the GW basing sand (small stones) and then some fish tank gravel.

What I do is glue the large stones and bits from my bitz box onto the base then paint pva glue around it. Then dip it in the basing sand.

Once its set I paint it all with a milk consistency wash of 80/20 water/pva. This binds it all.

Once thats done I prime it, paint it, wash it, drybrush it, pick out the detail then stick grass where you would expect it to grow.

Heres an unpainted one

and painted up

This is an old one using GW grass which is waaaaay to bright

The backpacks and cloaked marines are from the FW recon squad.

Too late.... its green on the outside and grey on the inside. How practical is that!

Im not sure so let me know your thoughts. I dont know if the patterns too tight or too close in terms of pallet.

I'm not too sure on this one. It looks great don't get me wrong, I just don't like the use of the standard Ultramarines livery and a camo cloak. Seems like a double negative. I say either fully commit to the disguise or don't.

If it was me I'd darken up the armor to a grey/brown hue, that way he'd truly be blending in with his environment. Plus, gives you an excuse to widen your palette with this army. :)
