Thanks, @marine7312000! I see him stomping through the enemy, just wading in with his heavy flamer, swinging his arm as if it helped propel him faster like it did when he was still a whole marine and not inside a sarcophagus.

The contemptor was really a fun build and fun to paint.

Ok! A little more progress. Showing work in progress shots of my 12 Sternguard. Well, I'll only ever use 10 of them at a time, but I thought it would be a good time to paint the Assault on Black Reach commander and Captain Tycho as well, since they look like veterans. I plan to run them with 2 combi flamers, 2 combi meltas, 2 combi plasmas, and 4 bolters in a drop pod. Plasma and Melta get out one side, the flamers and bolters get out the other, and pick their respective targets. Kraken bolts and flamers to deny cover, melta/AP3/plasma for MCs, 2+/3+ saves, etc.

They were assembled out of the newer Vanguard Veterans, Death Company, Sanguinary Guard, now-older tactical arms, and the metal Sternguard Veterans box.

I still have to do my pearlescent white on the left shoulder pad rims to denote being promoted from the tactical marines, and the bronze right shoulders mean they are sergeants or 1st company. The color of the blood drops will be company, and a spot on their knee will be squad.

So left to paint is linen colors, pearlescent white, green purity seal wax and eyes, a crimson wash on 8 of them, nuln oil on metal and bronze, reikland fleshshade on the linens, and finally some silver highlights on metal, gray highlights on the black, copper highlights, and touch ups.

The two metal bolter sternguard.

I also am working on an inquisitorial detachment to be allies to my Blood Suns. With the Blood Suns being Xeno fighters extroidenaire, they often team up with Xenos inquisitors. So I assembled this Inquisitorial detachment. The idea is to run them in a Landraider with twin linked lascannons as a backfield scorer who can support fire but still ccounter assault like the dickens. 5 Death Cult assassins, 2 Crusaders, 1 Ministorum Priest, 1 Xeno Inquisitor with power armor, psyker, force sword, rad/psychotroke grenades, 2 servo skulls. I was going to add coteaz, but the digital inquisition codex took his ability to make the henchmen scoring away... so no objective secured death cultists.

I wanted no repeats in the squad, but the only priest models I have contain plasmaguns, plasma pistols, or are obviously just scribes. So I put together this canoness model I thought originally to use as the inquisitor, but then found out after I bought the canoness that I had this Inquisitor model with sword and bolt pistol. We'll see after I get paint on them if I don't have to do another model as the priest if the Canoness looks too good.

Here's 2 of my death cultists. Shells are a theme in my army. A buddy had lots of leftover Wyche bits, but not really Wyche legs, so I used the ones that would hang from the side of the raider and made it look like they were, I hope, vaulting the local flora. I filed down a lot (not all!) of the sharp edges. I made cuts on the arms to change them from "hanging off the side" to "more killy knives".

After having looked at that picture on the big screen, it is saved from being the worst picture of models on the internet because my thumb is not in it. D'oh!

Last Death cultist was a Sister Repentia that I found. I literally have no idea where I got this. But! Sword, female, fits the aesthetic, and she can chop some fools.

14640559851_9f709dfc63_c.jpg

Crusaders - I had one metal one from the Inquisitor with Retinue box that Coteaz used to come in. The plastic one is a Scion with a Vanguard Veteran shield added to the trimmed hotshot laspistol arm.

Ok. That's all the progress I've done so far.

Nice! Somewhat creepily I have been doing this exact same thing this week... down to the female theme!! One small WiP of my Inquisitor based on the Canoness below and some other small blurry ones in the album link . As for the priest, may I suggest the Hospitaller(sic) model from SoB, that's the one that I am going with and works well with the theme I think. Once got this bunch done I'll post them all in good photos in my thread. Next pay cheque addition is some Thallax from Forgeworld to convert to serve as heavy and imposing gun servitors. I think your Death Cultists are much cooler than my Harlequin based ones (mine are some old metal ones with wraith guard swords chopped down).. may have to steal the Sister Repentia idea!

Well, it's been a while. But nothing is more annoying on a hobby forum than people posting about it being a while.  So I won't describe how it's been 8 months since I posted anything, and how since July I've been blessed with a newborn daughter, busy at work, etc., etc..

Progress!

First, the Sternguard were finished right before the new codex dropped. Lucky me! It's not like the elites slot is crowded anymore... or something. :dry.: I made 2 combi-meltas, 2 combi-plasmas, 2-combi-flamers, Tycho (as a Sternguard sergeant, because... uh, why else would we use him now?) and the Black Reach Captain as a Sterguard Sergeant. One guy has a black helmet because he's supposed to be with the tactical squads, but is a veteran as denoted with his crux terminatus and copper stripe on his helmet. Most were made wiht a combination of new Sternguard plastic kit, old metal sternguard, Death Co, Sanguinary Guard, and previous Tactical Squad to the current vanilla one. The white trim shoulder pad on the left is a chapter marking thing, and the copper on the right shoulder trim is another way of showing a veteran's status.

Plastic kit bash combi-flamer with CCW. With the heavy flamer, flamer, combi-flamer tactical squad probably going to be common in the future, this guy might double as a Tactical Squad sergeant depending on my painting work ethic.

Tactical Sergeant that I roped into this painting project. Veteran squads keep red helmets and gold stripe. Veterans assigned to "line" squads like assault and tactical squads, get the copper stripe on the black helmets.

16292348640_95b8bfa991_c.jpg

I ALMOST didn't duplicate a backpack across the squad, but there's 1 or 2 repeats.

16478046711_1ea8ee1d74_c.jpg

I sprayed the red on my landraider and 2nd Stormraven yesterday evening. That was nice to get the basic color down. I will be brush painting the metal and black parts. Extra bling added as well to both.

Also, I got the new codex, at least 1 box or clampack of all the new models, Deathstorm, and the Shield of Baal books. Also the Lord Executioner finecast model, and the new plastic vanilla squad to mix with the BA tactical squad. After painting these Sternguard, I am now of the belief that there CAN be too much bling on a model. Especially if you're painting 12 of them at a time.

Comments and criticism welcome!

  • 3 months later...

Recently finished some more models for a tournament I had in March. Got them to base coated for the tournament, but finished my washing and such, sealed, and took pictures more recently.

First up is the landraider. I take the normal landraider since I normally put power armor in there and don't need the frag launchers. Also, I was fine putting in a partial assault squad in the previous codex, or a partial tactical squad in this one, and having a scoring unit that's so tough and hard to move, and almost always getting the counter-charge.

The lighting is horrible in the landraider picture and the white balance is off. The red is really a burgundy color, the black almost gloss or satin, red/crimson line highlights, and copper for the important looking bits. Carronberg crimson wash, nuln oil on everything not red.

I love the bits on the Baal sprue. Since I magnetized my rhino chasis to be any kind, including predators, I use the decorative bits and spread them around.

THen I fininished my sniper scouts. I understand no one will wear red camo cloaks in the field, but since they need line of sight in the game anyways, it's OK too look good even if they're not functional. Did gray on the cloth bits for their fatigues.

ETL VOW POST:

I, The Father Mapple, rise to the challenge of E TENEBRAE LUX and vow to complete one Captain Karlaen from Codex: Blood Angels supplement Deathstorm of total value 160 points on or before August 1st, 2015. Success will bring eternal glory to my Legion, Chapter, and her Successors forever, and failure will doom me to bear the Badge of the Oathbreaker until the end of this year as my penitence.

17546554053_38c4f13ba1_c.jpg

Did a head swap from the Terminator kit. A bit disappointed with how un-interchangeable the BA Assault terminator kit was, but there are worse things in life. Like FineCast.

Also, to be primed at the same time will be these buildings I got and made over the weekend. They were from the DUST Tactics game expansion called Cerberus, and the 3 story building that is slightly non-box shaped in the top right of the first picture can be made from it. Well, miniature market had all DUST products 80% off, so I got 4 of the $60 expansions sets for $52 plus some shipping. And I made all this out of them! Had some spare tiles left over.

For a sense of scale ONLY, here is a 28mm miniature standing next to, and then on top of, one of the buildings.

These will look great painted up grim-darkly.

But, of course, ETL is first! I will prime the good Captain, and then give updates on how I do on here.

I leave to go overseas in a couple of days, and won't be back just before the contest ends, so I shouldn't vow anything else to be safe. It took this long to do one independent character, I can't vow a squad in 2 days!

I have also finished a tactical squad that I had half done and needed to tidy up. They are, like Karlaen, awaiting a finishing matte spray coat which does make the red the perfect shade I like.  I'll be queuing up  But it's SO DANG HOT in Texas right now and getting hotter, making spraying a perilous endeavor. I'll get pictures up of the tacticals when I get back. They're mostly old Black Reach and marines built from the previous tactical kit.

I want to do a mess of terminators next, between the Space Hulk and new Assault Terminators combined with a Tactical Terminator kit, and then some leftover older style assault terminators. Like... 25 or 28 terminators, but I don't think I could mentally handle it. I might just do 5 BA Terminators, then move to the Khorne project I have been assembling parts, bits or kits for. I think I might airbrush all 28, but after that I'm not sure.

  • 2 months later...

I finished up this Tactical Squad a long time ago, but I kept forgetting to take pictures of it. Nothing fancy here - some paint, washes, highlights, but not even edge highlighting for line troops. They're also Black Reach monopose models, except for the lascannon I did as an alternate to the missile launcher. They're my first tactical squad, but I have 2 of the new box and 1 blood angels box I'll be kitbashing with death company sprues in a future project.

The items on my painting/hobby station right now are the Deathstorm terminator set and Assault Terminators. I counted ALL my terminators and found out I needed the following numbers to fill out squads or get different compositions. I needed 5 SS/TH, 1 Power fist and storm bolter, 1x lightning claws, 1 chainfist, and 1 each assault cannon and flamer. That'll let me do a tactical squad with 2 of each an assault cannon or flamer, and chainfists in each combat squad. The assault terminators will allow me to field 7-10 of each type. But I rarely run a whole squad of the same flavor. Lots of clipping and filing.

Thanks for reading!

  • 3 weeks later...

Ok... next part of my project finished. I got... LOTS of terminators cleaned, assembled, glued, decorated, put on bases, and now need to be primed. This is for a 2000 point list I'm working on that is Archangels themed. The plan is to be able to field any of the variations of a full strength tactical squad and 2-3 5x marine assault squads.

I have my Space Hulk set that are clean, as they come models. I also have some Space Hulk converts I got in a big lot off of Ebay years ago when the 2009 set wasn't ridiculous amounts of money. Someone, not me, very cleverly added lightning claws and thunderhammers to them. The only one I complain about is Goriel, or the floor-peeler, who has a fist with a shield on it. Ah well. It's hard to tell from 3 feet away.

Then I have a Tactical Terminator box melded together with an Assault Marine box, where my second set of Tactical heavy weapons and 2nd chainfist came from, one Lightning claw terminator, and 5 assault terminators with TH/SS. I also had 5 plain assault terminators I got from cobbling parts from lots together, and a set of Black Reach Tactical terminators, one who was a test model and turned out ugly... so he's getting painted over.

The "small" Librarian is a metal one with the old arm that was supposed to be a signum or something turned into a holder for a storm shield. The new plastic BA librarian got a storm shield as well. The Space Hulk one is stock.

Then there's the sergeants/captains. One is the old metal captain as he normally comes but with some added bling, and the other is a chaos mace and thunderhammer so that I can have a ridiculous double thunderhammer marine captain. Because, reasons. He just looks so ANGRY.

SO..... pictures.

Now to find a completely free weekend (HAH!) and prime them all. Then airbrush the red on all of them too. The rest I'll have to hand paint.

This log is getting so picture laden, I probably need to warn people now.

Edited by Father Mapple

Weird... hit a limit on the number of images I could put up. So here's the last picture.

Extras since they don't fit in squads. But I do have 10 lightning claws total. I either need 2 more hammernators to make 10, or these will fill up the slots in a Crusader.

21886879189_c3db77bb8f_c.jpg

As long as it took me to build these guys, painting takes even longer. There's a reason for the ETL I only submitted Karlaen. Lol. I will probably break then down into groups of five or so for my sanity's sake. I had a brief thought of only getting one paint pot out and just painting all that color on all 39, and repeating that until I'm all done, but that way lies madness, I think.

Thanks for the feedback! I live how supportive our fraternity forum is.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well, I did get all the terminators primed, so there's that. Been waiting for time to do airbrushing though and get a big bunch of them reddish. In the meantime, I was looking for single models to finish or work on.

So, I spent a couple of hours taking the dreadnought below and making sure the colors match my army. It was originally closer to a mephiston red and bright gold, with the metal painted red too, but I decided that I was tired of using the ebay paint job. So, a few layers, washes, and highlights later, here is what I got. The frag cannon can replace the plasma cannon and is painted similarly.

Now that I have my 3 dreadnoughts done and 3 drop pods as above, that's 1/3 of my invasion themed force. Contemptor for a melee furioso, this newest one for a template furioso, and an old metal furioso painted as a death company dreadnought. Dread wise, I still have a librarian conversion and the Deathstorm one to paint which will be my Cassor the Damned with claws and magna grapple.

But in the meantime, TERMINATORS.

  • 4 weeks later...

But in the meantime, TERMINATORS.

I lied. In the meantime, DEATH COMPANY. I finished 8 death company with bolters, one with power fist. They're all older metal death company bodies with plastic bits kit bashed on. Painted in my normal death company scheme. Used to run these guys a lot in the old codex. Now I'm just under a year too late! But finishing a painting project is sometimes it's own reward.

Not the tip top best of my paint jobs, but it'll do for some line troops. Need to find the spare backpack I had laying around. But it's pretty good for about 45min to 1 hour a few night's a week.

I started on the black hands, legs, and shoulder pads on 3 of 12 terminators last night, so next time, no lies. Just Terminators. I'll be back.

Thanks! Yeah, I love the idea of white death company, especially as they contrasted well with the red and black of the main army colors. I also invert the use of the red and copper as well, switching a lot of the places you'd see one color on the normal marines and inverting it to the death company.

Now I have a stormraven, dreadnought, one drop pod, 8 infantry with bolters, 5 jump packers with 2 axes, a normal chaplain, and Astaroth all painted. When/If I play another faction, I'll be able to get an instant, cohesively painted death company allied force. I need to make a Raphen unit and Cassor to fill out troops slots, really, and still have Lemartes to paint. So I'm not done with the Death Company totally, but I got most of the normal options I'd need now. When I get Raphen, Cassor, and Lemartes done, I'll have a legal all death company force for 1500. I have a terminator chaplain, but I don't think he needs doing anytime soon.
