The arms on the DC dread are actually just not pushed all the way on. I hadn't varnished them yet, and I don't permanently attach arms to help remember weapon destroyed results, so I actually paint the join.

Thanks for the compliments, guys!

I've been busy!

I started a Heresy Ultramarines force. You can find it here. There's lots of Calth kit bashes and bit swaps, magnetization and such going on.

I'll also be posting other, non Blood Suns projects there, but this is still my first army and preferred project.

In that vein (that's a BA joke) I've pledged some models for Rage to Salvation. That pledge is here. I'll be doing Raphen's Squad of Death Company so I have my Baal Strike Force and CAD all filled with Objective Secured death company models along with Cassor.

Also, I've been finishing a few things prior to Rage to Salvation that just needed some details or which wouldn't have fit the spirit of the event. The first one is this Stormraven. The one bad thing about this is I painted the interior, but the super glue frosted the windows. Then the matte sealant finished off the canopies making them impossible to see through. Maybe on my 3rd stormraven I'll get it right. Not the best work, not a lot of weathering, not any additional elements. Just enough. I like it and feel good about it.

NOW for some HERESY... this is my Sanguinor Counts-As. I don't like the normal Sanguinor model, and I love the Saint Celestine sculpt. I wanted to paint it as well as I could. There's a few touch ups the camera has shown me I couldn't see with my eyes, but I am decently proud of this one. Click through to see original sized ones.

It's such a gorgeous sculpt. I just wanted to do it some justice.

So, with the Golden Host being a thing now, I just need to finish 10 Sanguinary Guard to get some use out of her. She got a Sanguinary Guard backpack instead of the cloak and cherubim she normally comes with. The wings are from Reaper set of 4 wings that come in a blister. The paint scheme is close to my normal troopers. I got something suitably epic for a base planned soon, but not ready yet.

Until I finish the 7 Death Company I'm working on, I won't have much to update again. I encourage you to PLEASE leave me feedback, criticism, or comments! I appreciate them all. I also encourage you to go pledge something for Rage to Salvation.

  • 1 month later...

These are the final vows for my Rage to Salvation 2016 pledge.

A few notes: I decided to keep all of the un-helmeted heads to keep this Raphen’s Unit very distinct from the other Death Company, so we know which squad is which. I built all these models with my first set of Death Company I bought for my Blood Angels when the new kit came out in 2009, but modeled them all on “Rule of Cool” and not playability. Now it looks like I have Sanguinus’s own prescience, as they more or less exactly make up Raphen’s squad.

My secondary vow of 1 death company marine with bolter is also included. He’s an old Black Reach marine that I needed to fill out the total number of bolter marines I wanted. Also, rubbish phone is rubbish at taking pictures.

30967196625_ec68c34aa9_c.jpg

30967231025_df53909829_c.jpg

I painted their eyes a pearlescent white for 2 reasons: 1) I’ve seen something similar on some 40k artwork to represent the psychic might of their rage being unleashed and their flashbacks to Sanguinius, and 2) it’s simple.

To finish my 1850pt all Death Company list, I just need one more bolter death company marine with a power fist, and then I'll be done with all the possible Death Company armies I wanted to make. I'll add a Death Company Chaplain from Angel's Blade at some point, but I'm on a hobby kick now and have (somehow) purchased enough already.

Thanks again to Jolemai for running the event and the fellow brethren who joined me in this pledged quest.

Now I have some Heresy marines to work on next, (HERE) and then I’ll be back to Blood Angels to finish up 5 thunder hammer storm shield terminators or 7 more Tactical Terminators to get within spitting distance of my Arch Angels list. Hopefully going to get some games in during the holiday season to report back in here.

  • 1 month later...

I am working on my Ultramarines at the moment, but the BA subforum has a thread about your "Pile of Shame" and so I decided to take some army wide pictures of the stuff I painted to ENCOURAGE me and the stuff I have left enough to ALSO ENCOURAGE me, but through shame. Seeing as I've been collecting and painting since 2009, it looks like I'll need another 7+ years to get the unpainted pile into the painted pile.

I apologize for the pictures being fuzzy in the lower left hand corner. The reason the lower left corner is fuzzy is the same reason anything in my life is messy in appearance or covered in chocolate: I live with a 2 year old. The chocolate has since been cleaned off the lens.

Here's my Blood Angel Army, painted in a slightly modified flesh tearer's scheme with white death company, since 2009:

31750478712_aff6cba4e5_c.jpg

These models have pictures elsewhere in this thread, except the old metal/plastic terminators originally on 25mm bases in the back. They help me fill out squads when I don't have enough, or are for apocalypse games.

31525069290_29e0b6a762_c.jpg

Sternguard are the front two ranks, elsewhere in this PLOG. The 10 jumpers behind them are the first 40k models I painted. I literally did 10 marines, batch painting style, for my first models since I played Warhammer Fantasy in 1996. They're acceptable quality, but the next squad will be much cleaner and better.

31525068020_be2eb5bbe5_c.jpg

More things I have pictures of here:

31781651031_9d87849b82_c.jpg

All the death company I've painted. I ONLY NOW realized that Raphen's squad's of jump pack death company is painted with the jump packs in inverted color scheme. This is shameful. I even had a reference death company in front of me while painting to prevent this very thing! But not a jump pack.

Painted chaplains and bolter death company.

31525064700_d30a356fa2_c.jpg

The Mephiston and Dante were painted by very talented friends, neither of which play 40k now.

31750464892_6c5336da62_c.jpg

Priests were painted by the same friend who did Mephiston. I basically bought him a box of Wyches per priest.

Vanguard Veterans! Some scouts in the background.

Tartaros Terminators I THOUGHT would be legion ones, but they're the 40k ones. Then Burning of Prospero came out and I got those plastic legion terminators instead, so now these are Blood Angels. Half done Sanguinary Guard.

The mechanized armoury. The 4 chasis that have the sponson doors glued on have all turret and sponson options in the regular and baal predator kits magnetized. The two with circles glued in the holes of the Razorbacks have magnets inside them so I can use landraider sponsons, Predator Turrets, or razorback turrets on them. The "Deimos" pattern one has a whirlwind turret I've never used, but I think it might become an inquisitor's ride.

The vindicator is the old metal one, and the landraider has all options magnetized.

WORKSPACE -

Here's a staging area. I group models, clip, store current projects, hang up my "treats and palette cleansers" for when I do big units and projects, and my airbrush/lamps are there.

31525073430_21f825b256_c.jpg

Storage. Only models down here, but lots of different forces in that clear box.  2 Blood Bowl teams, some fantasy pieces I kept just for painting and memory's sake, and a Khorne Zone Mortaliz force that is complete in bits and pieces, but not assembled.

31750482592_5709038e77_c.jpg

The previously mentioned "treats" and the cases holding a Firestorm Armada fleet (since Battlefleet Gothic was on the way out when I was on my way in to 40), and my inquisitorial forces along with a load of kasrkin, stormtroopers, acolytes, and scions.

31525071480_eb94f1369c_c.jpg

I'd love to see some other people's collections or hear some feedback. 7 years! That's a long time.

  • 1 month later...

Cool idea using that great Celestine model as a "counts-as" Sanguinor. I don't think it's heresy at all, given that no one knows what the Sanguinor is ... he's some sort of saind/psychic manifestation of Sanguinius so why couldn't he appear as a female? And the model is multipurpose since from what I've heard (haven't read the rules) the actual Celestine -- who is now available as an HQ choice for any Imperiual Army -- is pretty good.

Nice army -- you've accomplished a lot more in 7 years than I have, well done!

Thanks, dude! I appreciate the encouragement. The only bad thing about the new Celestine model in my eyes is the old sculpt isn't available anymore. They are sort of going for two different ideas: the old one being a martyr's ascendancy, the new one being a martyr's returning in glory.
  • 1 month later...

So I constructed a couple things for the Great Baalite Bakeoff. Here those are:

Ok, I'm posting some pictures. They are huge and uncropped, and although clear, not exactly what I wanted but.... such is life in the grim, dark future.

Parts List:

Head: Venerable Dreadnought Kit (I think)

Torso: BA Death Company

Legs: Sanguinary Guard kit

Right Arm and Inferno Pistol: BA Death Company kit

Left Arm: random old plastic tactical arm

Crozius: A bit from an old chaplain metal model I didn't hack apart. Really! It was in a lot of bits I got. Chaplain with Plasma Pistol I think.

Jump pack: BA Sanguinary Guard kit

Winged Drops: BA Death Company kit

Right Shoulder Pad: Old Legion of the Damned metal shoulder pad

Left Shoulder Pad: Old metal Death Company shoulder pad

Purity Seal covering up a horrible green stuff and pinning job to get the metal hand and plastic arm to stick: BA Death Company kit

With that one done, I'm going to go double check the Dreadnought bits I found and make sure the Librarian Dreadnought is still possible to enter. It might be out of competition, but it's still cool, so I might take the time to document it anyways.

Parts Used

Body - AOBR or regular dreadnought. The fronts were filed down to fit some spare venerable parts I had lying around on.

Front Sarcophagus plates - Venerable Dreadnought

Right Arm: Metal furioso arm with meltagun

Left Arm: Venerable Dreadnought arm with human-like fingers and fist

Force Weapon: sword from metal space marine terminator captain

Smoke launchers: Some SM vehicle sprue

"Engine" is the Baal Flamer turret tanks and the Baal assault cannon turret ammo hopper stacked together. They look like fuel canisters and ammo supplies.

Legs: Normal dreadnought with Venerable shin plates

Scrolls, seals, and cruxes: from vehicle upgrade sprues in bitz box.

That is 2 vows complete for me! This one might be OCC, but, well, it was too cool not to finish.

I also assembled some non-Baalite Bake Off models. Here are those pictures. A couple were already built and primed, but the bare plastic and metal ones were just done.

These will join the Jump Pack Librarian (with psychic wings) and Mephiston to consist of my entire Librarius. Or Coven. Or Transfusion. Or whatever BA call them.

Time to finish some priming and then break out the blue! I need to do blue on another project as well, but I'm going to go the extra mile and do some zenithal highlighting as well.

Jolemai: I'll save a couple for ETL. I'm expecting another chapter serf to enter my household here in weeks, so it might be a 2 model or so commitment.

LutherMax: yes, I love the beginning of Moby Dick and that's where the character name comes from. I've also made it the name of my high Chaplain or recordist for my chapter.

  • 1 year later...

So, I will be pledging those old models for THIS YEAR'S ETL instead of last years. Just a few Blood Angels terminators to round out my complete 2000pt force using 8th edition rules. Not tournament bashing great, but lots of fun and thematic. Also means I play Space Hulk with one side painted completely, so far.

  • 1 year later...

Am I allowed to resurrect this topic despite it being a few years? Testing post.

I redid my blood angels list that is all death company and found several hundred points from my 7th edition list I played, so I'm adding a smash Captain and Tycho the Lost to the list.

Also, I finished making the Grail and CAT machine from space Hulk into new objectives to be used in the board game or a 40k game.

My blood for Baal! Pictures to follow if threadomancy is allowed. Be kind to me Mort and Jolemai!

It's your own project log thread. I don't think that's considered a necro. ;)

Here is my smash captain conversion. Backpack and head from Sanguinary Guard kit. Body and shield from Masters of the Chapter. And the thunder hammer head came from Vanguard Veterans but is pinned on the original power axe haft.

The Tycho the Lost model is the anniversary/special edition (I forget which) modern model from the Blood Angels 2nd Edition codex cover. I'm going to paint his hair the color of Tycho, but he looks insane enough and looking at Tycho's melee weapon, the Dead Man's hand, I think a powerfist could be a good stand in for it. The actual tycho model I have I painted up like a Sternguard/Captain a few pages back. So this Tycho will be in white limbs, black torso and upper limbs, white backpack, and copper for all the bling. The combi-melta is from a Black Templars captain model of yesteryear.

I will be putting them on 32mm bases as well. I don't know if I'll ever rebase the previous 100 marines, but I will be using 32mm from now on.

Will you be painting the Smash Captain in the Death Company's colours?

On the topic of rebasing - I have recently started a slow burn through my own 25mm-based marines. At the moment I'm rebasing only those that I need for the games. To that end I leave them on the 25mm, but glue an MDF 32mm base underneath. That raises their height only about 1.5-2mm. This will later be masked with PVA glue and sand. However in your case you would be losing that black trim you have.

Other options that come to my mind are base converters which you can buy or print in 3D.

Edited by Majkhel

Will you be painting the Smash Captain in the Death Company's colours?

It's tempting. I get doing it would be consistent with almost everything else in my list: 18 Death Co, Chaplain (all white), Death Co Dread, Furioso Dread using a Chaplain Dreadnought painted white, 1 of 2 stormravens are death company colors, drop pod for 8 death co and chaplain is death Co colors, Lemartes...

But Astorath is red and white/copper trim. He's the exception chaplain, which are normally all white. And some games Smash Captain might not succomb to the Black Rage, so I think I'll paint him like a normal captain.

That's a good few ideas about rebasing. My basing scheme is not, actually, that tough. I use green and "normal" colored sand on the bases, add some sea-shells for HQ's or sergeants. It's more clipping or pulling the bases off. I use plastic glue on plastic minis, so a good portion are plastic-welded on there which will require filing after clipping.

I included some of these objective markers in the army wide shots, and the drop pod locator beacon and shell were in the 2nd page or so, but as I finished the CAT and grail from Space Hulk 3rd edition, I thought I'd take some group shots of my objective markers for games. I like things to be in theme. I have lots of red, black, and gold dice with BA symbols on many of them.

  • 3 weeks later...

Weather was surprisingly temperate for a few days. It was so nice, I sat in my garage with the door open, priming and airbrushing models with music playing and kids biking up and down the street.

I built 11 Vanguard Vets. 3 power swords, 4 chainswords and 1 storm shield, 4 power fists. Should more have storm shields to be viable? Yes. Do I own more storm shield bits? No. So we went with what we got. I still have 2-3 more older metal Vanguard Veterans if I do come into some storm shields, but they were duplicates of what I already did pose wise, so I held off on them.

49471068376_8aa295fe30_c.jpg

49471292987_2ff03213e6_c.jpg

Some previously had "3 colors" on them for tournaments back in... 5th edition? But a nice coat of black primer hides a lot of stuff.

But now, here's the red base color for my models laid down with my airbrush.

49481608937_a4c4e41620_c.jpg

I'm re-learning my airbrush every time I use it, since I hobby so slow. I use it 2 - 3 times a year if I'm busy. But the paint is so smooth, thin, and consistent, I love the results even if I don't have control yet for details.

Having the right parts is also important. I originally got the Badger 360, which cam with a .7mm needle. I bought the "detail" needle that was .2mm, but didn't switch apertures or tips on the brush, so the .2mm needle in the .7mm aperture meant it "leaked" paint even when just blowing air, clogged a lot, etc. I stripped the brush, cleaned it, and put the right parts together, and now it sings! Sings like a compressor, but still, it sings!

These guys will be next project for my Blood Suns. After that, I return to the Heresy Ultramarines Delegatus I posted in my other thread. Then it should be time for ETL, where I'll be using the airbrush to put down my blue on 8 librarians and 1 librarian dreadnought.
