This is my (almost) entire Space Marines collection at the moment, and I'm still a little torn between painting them as Angels of Absolution (I really like their colours and them thinking they're absolved) or just regular old Dark Angels. I'm hoping to either do a test model tonight or start painting properly tomorrow after I manage to get some new models and paints off of my local store.

There's 10 terminators, Belial, three bikes, ten tactical marines and a librarian in this picture. Not sure if I'll paint the part of the scenery since I'm a bit at a loss as to how to do it.

Oh and once I get painting I'll have better pictures; this was just taken with my phone.

Just a quick shot of a test model I didn't finish; I'm having a hard time deciding the colour of the robe. This red was a total disaster, and the armour ain't looking that great either. I know I can do better, I just need to buy some new paints tomorrow. I was trying to go with this tutorial http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/146065-how-to-paint-bone-quickly/ but I realized I don't have that Sepia wash so I sort of tried to layer on the bone white and then drybrush on some white primer mixed with bone white, but it looks kind of dull. Hopefully I'll have better luck tomorrow when I start painting the actual models of the army.

Bone and red. Youve hit 50% of the colours I hate. The other two been gold (only GW paints) and yellow.

I cant seem to get bone smooth no matter what, the rest I can after painful attempts.

Heres some advice on the red: Assuming you used a black undercoat (cause otherwise the red would most likely stick), use a grey undercoat for the area you want to paint. I know the names from the old GW paint range only so either a fortress or a codex (depending on the tone of the red) grey.

Then cover that with a thin layer of foundation red. Then start mixing the blood red and scab red equivalents. You will need about three or four thin layers.

Mixing should be 3:3:3 (three drops of blood, 3 drops of scab and 3 of water) and whiping off any excess paint in a tissue paper.

When you finish the first layer you mix another round in 3:2:3. Then 3:1:3, then 3 blood and 2 water. By that stage you will want to smash the model, find my adress, and stab me in the eye with your brush. But dont let it get you down/

When you are at this stage wash it with a red wash. Then call it a day and leave it to dry (about 4 hours will do). Paint something else.

When drying is complete, use either a  brown ink (not wash) or flesh wash (thats an ink too). Once again leave it to dry for 3-4 hours.

The red is done, you might want to highlight it with an orangish paint.

When its done, I prefer to make to give em look so I use a purple wash but thats me.

Wait a sec I have a chaos lords cloak, will take a pic to show you the results. Hopefully it will be a decent pic...

Thanks for the tips, Brother Immolator.

I did another quick try on the quick bone painting tutorial; it looked fine until I mucked up with the Charadon Granite I'm using as base for the black parts. The finish is a bit grainy/dusty/dirty but I think I can work on that.

For red try this (old paint names)

Over a black primer

Base of Mephiston red

Watered down scab red

Agrax Earthshade (especially in the creases)

Drybrush with scab red

Dry drybrush with blood red

You can see it on the inside of this guy's robe.

Personally, I prefer to wash red with green washes, rather than agrax/devlan mud. It's a tricked I picked up from Ron over at http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/ (can't find the specific article). It might sound crazy but it works really well. It's what I used on my belial conversion here (hopefully it isn't too hard to make out.) Hope this helps!

Sorry for the flash, but without it he was completely black. I'm still trying to decide on how to do his head and left arm.http://i.imgur.com/6rfGljN.jpg

Why dont you leave the termies as they are?

I mean paint up the details but keep the main colour, they look gritty!

Yes, that's how you're supposed to leave them, and it's all cool and looks nice, but I always mess up the details.

That's the joke.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with how he turned out, usually I'm terribly horrible at using greenstuff. I might add a horned skull bit SOMEWHERE if I find one. I had to cut up three arms to make the left bolter arm!

I just wanted to quickly take a picture of this. Next update will be next weekend when I finish the DW squad, it's back to the army for now.

If you are still struggling with red and want a really bright pop red, grab some of the Tallarn Flesh foundation paint (or nearest equivalent if GW have changed the name) whack a thinned down smooth coat of that, then a coat of blood red.. you get a really bright and smooth red in a couple of layers that can then be washed and such to your hearts desire.. :)
