Ooooh, good point. I second that!

I just tried weathering on a Ravenguard, and it didn't go so hot on anything that wasn't white, which admittedly was a majority. :D

It really depends what type of base your going for, if you are going for a dried up waste land/desert look I will try to post the steps I use on the next clean model I can finish, probably later today or tomorrow.

Paints I use for damage, Leadbelcher, Runefang Steel.

For weathering: Agrellan earth, FW Dark earth powder.

Bases: Agrellan Earth, Steel Legion Drab, Ushabti Bone.

So tutorial

First a scout, ignore the boots I accidently went over them with watered down agrellan earth before I started this.

Add watered down agrellan earth to armour joints and crevices, start at the boots or feet and work your way up as high as you think is appropriate, I tend to still add it to higher areas like the trims on shoulder pads and the vents of space marine backpacks but mainly in patches not completely focused on the entire area. Also sponged on scorched brown onto the bolter, this may only work on red bolters, so if you are using black bolters perhaps better to use the method I use on the black armour.

Next I sponged on leadbelcher to the black armour, if I do damage on an chapter mark, I normally use scorched brown as the base instead. If its a red pinstripe I sponge over it with the base colour of the model, in my case that's black. Also you don't have to sponge it, it can be painted on as well if the area is difficult to reach.

Once that was done I went over the damaged areas, including the weapon with runefang steel to lighten some of the damage, some people do this inverted which also looks just as good, so some start with rune fang then do the inner damage with the darker metallic.

http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj150/o0_Darkeh_0o/Weapon2.jpg

Sponged on some agrellan earth to the boots and lower trousers, this step isn't always necessary as I dry brush agrellan earth onto the lower area on the model as well.

And after the dry brush to the lower legs and boots.

Last is a watered down wash of dark earth weathering powder which I put pretty much over all the model, when I use pigments on vehicles I normally put it on dry and then use water to streak it but with a small miniature I use it watered down from the start. In the picture you cant really see the effects to much but I find it does make a difference to the finished look, especially on robes and tabards.

That's pretty much what I do to all my units now for weathering, experimenting with gore at the moment but not sure how to go about dried up blood.

Will post up a base tutorial if you found this helpful.

A good way to do dried blood is to mix red ink with a touch of darker bown ink, as dried blood is a darker reddish-brown color.  When you are satisfied with the color of your mix. dab it on a bit at a time where you want it.  Don't worry about it being too transparent to begin with, as you should be putting more on as it dries.  Doing that will build up the color and make it more opaque.  Another thing you will soon figure out is to mess with the drying ink just before it is completely dry, such that you can dab at it to roughen up the texture/vary the color concentration in different areas.  Hope that makes sense.

Bases

First base in black, here's a base primed with a few glue marks here and there.

http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj150/o0_Darkeh_0o/b1.jpg

After a coat of agrellan earth, the cracks on base tend to always vary, I try to put on a fairly thick coat.

http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj150/o0_Darkeh_0o/b2.jpg

Then I add sand and basing stuff, this could probably have been done before but I tend to always do it after so I can put the sand in areas that didn't crack.

http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj150/o0_Darkeh_0o/b3.jpg

Then go over the sand and rocks with steel legion drab, tends to blend in ok with agrellan earth so you don't need to go over the whole base.

http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj150/o0_Darkeh_0o/b4.jpg

Add a drybrush of ushabti bone to the base, may take a few dry brush coats.

http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj150/o0_Darkeh_0o/b5.jpg

And then I go over the base with a very watered down coat of agrellan earth to blend the colours a bit better.

The edges I paint with steel legion drab and I also add mordheim turf to a few areas.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the tutorial, that looks awesome!

I've got a total obsession with snow bases at the moment, but I have to admit that's not going to work with HH World Eaters. I think you've just solved my issue there :D

New base for company master.

And finished scout from tutorial, just got round to finishing the icon on his shoulder and adding some turf to the base.

http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj150/o0_Darkeh_0o/Scout1.jpg

So I haven't really updated this thread with any new miniatures in a while, seem to be going back to old or getting distracted with conversions (the amount of half painted stuff I have) so I decided I would try to paint at least two things or more each week and at least get something done, this week it was the scout I showed in the tutorials and this guy.

I'm still not sure about my method for the green robes, which I may go back to (not this again) but it wont be until I get quite a bit done.

Thanks for looking, C&C always appreciated.

Amazing miniatures there.

As to your issue with the green robe, I find using a lighter yellow-green mixed with the basecoat in varying shades works well. Then wash the whole thing with green and you should get a richer looking green. You'll want several steps of blending with darker cloth.

  • 4 months later...

Got lost in the warp for a few months, but crawled my way out somehow. Hi all, been a while, hope your all doing well.

Seemed to have returned at the same time the ETL is upon us, coincidence or some trick of the warp. Anyway I should really start getting my brushes back out and start painting, so much stuff gathering dust. I was so tempted to buy a Deredeo Dreadnought off FW this weekend but then it was as if I heard the screams of every piece of unfinished plastic telling me no, I never realised how much stuff I got unfinished or not even primed till I looked, this is just the terminators, not so bad I guess.

http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj150/o0_Darkeh_0o/20150502_131003.jpg

Then I saw two 10 man assault squads, a 10 man devastator squad, a 10 man veteran squad, a 10 man tactical, a techmarine and servitors, 5 Rhino chassis, a land raider, some bikes I think around 9, a landspeeder and a few independent characters.

I'm deciding on something small for the ETL since I really haven't lived up to Dark Angels standards in the last two ETL's I will try to redeem myself.

Nice to be back.

Good luck this year - I've just read this post from start to finish, really hope that some of your awesome painting gets to count towards the Unforgiven total this year. Your weathering/basing tutorials have just made it harder for me though - hope I've got enough time for my planned vows now I need to add those extra processes.

For the Lion!

Thanks guys, made some progress on the chaplain and land speeder, going to focus on the land speeder for now since I may be entering it in a local GW competition, nothing to serious though just a little local event.

WiP always so messy
