The lone figure in the shadowed rafters casually toyed with his flaying knife, watching with amused interest as the two legionnaires below stared each other down, both marines daring the other to make a move as the rest of the crowd egged them on. The two warriors' respective squadmates crowded around them, exchanging threats, jibes and crude gestures as they awaited their champions' signal to attack.

 

The figure smiled to himself, revealing a shark-like set of cruelly sharpened teeth, he knew neither side would attack, they all knew. Not a one of them had the nerve to cross that line and violate the Captain's decree, and with good reason, they remembered all too well the example that had been made of Yuul Shar. His broken, bleeding form still hung from the roof of the mess hall even now, croaking feeble requests for death that his malicious brothers would never grant, even without the threat of joining Yuul hanging over them.

Due to the Captain's preference for straightforward assaults on hardened targets the 15th Company possessed a much higher than average casualty rate, so to avoid further loss of vital manpower the decree had been made that all infighting between company members would cease, save for specially sanctioned bouts within the dueling cages. It had not gone over well with the Astartes of course, but they all knew to defy Hashec Tor was an act of suicide, a slow eventual one, but suicide nonetheless.

 

Slowly, and with much frustrated reluctance, the two legionnaires backed away from one another before storming off in opposite directions, their squadmates forming up behind them as the crowd of onlookers grumbled bitterly at the loss of their entertainment. A low, bass growl, like the sound of stone being ground against itself, rumbled through the voxpiece in his ear. Instantly he switched his attention solely to the noise, his posture stiffening slightly as if fighting the urge to stand at attention.

 

"Report." The graven voice demanded, making the hair on the back of the figure's neck stand on end.

 

"The troublemakers have dispersed, all bluster but no blood. It seems they've taken Yuul's final lession to heart sir."

 

Another growl echoed through the vox, part acknowledgement, part... Disappointment? He couldn't tell.

 

"The culprits?" The voice spoke again, more a demand than question.

 

"Cornix, of the Fanged. The other was some rabid youngblood I don't know, probably came in with the last batch of cannon fodder sir. Both of them slithered back to their respective holes after neither would make a move. Your orders?"

 

"Continue your observations. Keep an eye on that youngblood, I shall... Have words, with the good Sergeant."

 

"As you command, Warmonger."

Praetorian Hashec Tor looked down on the embarkation deck from the armored viewing chamber. Bathed in near total darkness, a full Tertius Cohort consisting of fifty Astartes Legionnaires stood in ordered ranks, Tigrus pattern bolters held at present arms. To anyone else it would have been an impressive sight, but the Praetorian saw through the false discipline to the rotten core within. These were nothing but murderers and low-hive scum ruthless enough to pass the legion trials. Hashec had been part of the first Nostraman intake, raised under the iron law of the Night Haunter. Discipline and obedience to the primarch ran in his marrow, unlike the scum that now waited below.

 

Still, they would suit the needs of the crusade. Every passing year saw them enter more hostile regions along the outer galactic rim, and the 15th Company would need bodies in the bloody days to come. If it wasn’t for his eidetic memory, he doubted he’d even remember their names. Still, there were likely two or three that would make it into the terror cadres and earn the right to carry a Hesh-pattern Volkite Charger. 

 

A low, crocodile hiss escaped his rebreather as he turned towards the door. The 15th Company was a mirror of the legion as a whole. They were being poisoned, slowly and surely, by each new generation of Nostraman blood. The proud core of Terran Veterans those Nostramans of the old breed were slowly being eclipsed by Legionnaires with no discipline and a mind towards nothing but saving their hides. 

 

The VIII legion walked a fine line as it was with Imperial censure, only tolerated because of the effectiveness of their methods. Hashec knew that when the crusade ended, the Imperium would look to the monsters within…

Alright ladies and gents, the VIII legion needs bodies. The list below shows the available slots. Some veterans from before will be given predetermined slots, however most of the others from before are (at this time period) members of other companies or specialist formations, and thus will not be grandfathered in (want to have some room for new folks to join as well). 

 

Those who will retain their rank are:

These are members of the 15th Company Atramentar that were ruthless bastards even back in the day, which is why they survived all the way to M41. One member will get the chance to have the blood of the Night Haunter run through his veins, since before he was a thin-blood renegade from the Minotaurs chapter.

Alright the list in the initial post has been updated with those who've PM'd me in order according to when they messaged me. Also got you Augustus, sorry I missed your initial post!

 

Stoked on the participation and energy already everyone! As for the veterans, I've got you guys noted down as well, however you still have to PM me a name idea for your character. Also to be fair to new blood, you guys won't be entered into the overall list order until noon (Pacific Time).

Funny enough Vazzy's previous character was an Ultramarine who joined my obliteration cadres. However this time around I'm trying to stick to Nostraman and Terran-born sons, since prior to the heresy it would have been strange for a XIII legion dude to wind up in a Night Lord company, especially one that was waaaaay out on the fringes prior to it's recall for Istvaan V.
