Luther's W.o.S.P. (Works of Slow Progress)

Finally got some pics of the finished Stormraven. The lighting is a bit harsh as the model wouldn't fit in my lightbox on its stand. I tried to go fairly realistic with the weathering and used bright metallic chips to act as edge highlights rather than highlighting the red itself. Hope you all like!

Someone spilled toxic goop all over that poor pastry :(

Excellent work, as per the norm.  Is the green cockpit glass just a single coat of the Tamiya on the interior?  How easy/hard is it to mess that up?  And did you still have to paint the guys inside for the effect to work?

That Stormraven looks absolutely mint! The only thing I'd add is to copy the heat stain you did on the assault cannon barrels on the multi-melta and side thrusters as well, as they look a little clean compared to the rest of the craft.

Although I must echo the others in that I'm not a big fan of the base. If I were to improve upon the it, I wouldn't have made the edges of the cork (both inner and outer) so uniform and smooth - that just makes it a look like a giant letter O. I'd add more height variation as well. For added effect, you could also stick some bits in the green gloop to add context. Is it a Tyranid digestion pool? Toxic waste spill? Things like half-dissolved corpses, floating oil barrels or Tyranid bits add a narrative and make it look less clean overall.

Out of curiosity, how do you do the edge weathering? Just sponge on layers of paint, drybrushing or do you go for weathering powders or something? I use a similar effect by sponging on Rhinox Hide followed by Leadbelcher, but I find the effect isn't always as easy to control as I want. Especially on reflex angles (like the sides of the assault cannons), where you logically want less but because the angle is so flat, it's easy to get more paint on it because it's harder to hit the exact edge. Any hints and tips are always appreciated. :smile.:

Thanks for the comments and Likes!

A lot of people aren't keen on the base and I must admit on reflection I agree... I think the idea was good but the execution could have been much better. Luckily it's not glued on so I think this bird will be getting a new base at some point!

@ Firepower, for the cockpit I sprayed the inside of the cockpit black, masked it off and gave the controls and pilot a blast from in front / below with white. Then I gave the inside of the canopy a heavy coat of Tamiya Clear Green. It created a kind of gradient where it's almost opaque around the edges. I quite like the effect but if I were doing it again I might try airbrushing it for more control. So the pilot is painted, but just in greyscale.

@ Dosjetka – as for what comes next I'm spoiled for choice! I have loads of stuff basecoated waiting to be finished... I think it might be my Deredeo or Sicaran.

@ RedemptionNL, the paint chips are just sponged on – black followed by Vallejo Model Air 'Steel'. I always make sure there is hardly any paint on the sponge so I can build it up gradually for more control (just like with drybrushing). I also try to make sure the sponge is folded and use the rounded side – this allows you control by varying the pressure to hit smaller or larger areas. I find this works fine even for reflex angles.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I've been really busy with work and also a planning a month-long trip away which I'm on now! But I when I get back I will be chomping at the bit to get back into the hobby :)

Thanks MR, however the Deredeo will have to wait as it's time for the ETL and he is too far along to pledge... Instead, I'll be doing Dante:

In other news, I went to Warhammer Fest yesterday and took loads of pics – check 'em out here: http://www.themightybrush.com/warhammer-fest-2016/

Cheers!
