And here's the promised update:

First up, the finished Retiarius:

Seeing the photos up close now, there may be one or two areas that could do with a slight touch up, but I am generally happy with the model: There’s a very nice sense of movement, which, I think, really fits this particular gladiator’s fighting style.

Here he is together with his “opposite”, the Secutor:

The next model I painted was the Bestiarius:

Again, I might go back and add some last highlights, but I think you already get a pretty good impression from these pictures. Here he is, complete with his hounds:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/19/595194-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/19/595192-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/19/595193-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

I am pretty happy with both the new model and the ensemble. And choosing the whip instead of the chains means the gladiator is far more flexible (and could be used for different beasts as well…).

I do of course realise that he doesn’t have any rules per se, but this was mainly a fun project, and I am quite pleased with the result!

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/19/595191-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

Here are the two newly painted  models together:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/19/595195-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

I actually managed to paint both of these in one day, with is almost spectacularly productive when compared to my usual standard…;)

So, as you can see, the gladiator squad is coming along rather nicely. As of today, there are seven painted models in the squad. Here they are, assembled for a family portrait:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/19/595196-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

That leaves me with the Carnifex and Cestus to paint. And after that? I’m not sure, actually: My original plan was to stop at eight, but these guys are serious fun to come up with, so don’t be surprised if I decide to add yet another model or two…

For now, though, I am pretty happy with how the squad is coming along. And all mostly thanks some really kick ass suggestions by fellow hobbyists. Thanks a lot, people!

It goes without saying that I’d be interested to hear any comments you might have! And, as always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more! :)

Suffice it to say that I've been copying the overall idea for my own 'Zerkers quite slavishly.

The poses are different though as I figure you had the overall idea first, so I shouldn't be too blatant about it.

Mate, copy all you like! I can't count the occasions where I've nicked ideas from other people's threads. Still, giving an already great idea that extra spin of your own design is probably even cooler ;)

Any chance of a link, in order to take a look at your zerkers?

Excellent work on the current crop Kraut, some very characterful figures. Only problem I can see is where to stop - if you get to eight and do another couple thats only another six away from two, eight strong squads ;)

Thanks, mate! I agree that it'll be quite a challenge to stop building these, but then, this is quite the win/win-situation: After all, each model I build and paint can be used to replace an older berzerker model, if all else fails ;)

As for additional gladiators, there are several options I am currently looking at: I'd like to do a gladiator wielding a meteor hammer at some point, since that weapon also appears in the World Eaters' background (and on the FW Rampagers). A fellow German hobbyist offhandedly suggested a gladiator based on the character of

from the videogame Ryse, and even if that would only be a very loose adaptation of that particular character, I have this idea of a converted Blood Angels deathmask combined with that helmet crest I was considering earlier for the Cestus.

Anyway, yeah, quite a few ideas for further models. Let's see how this works out ;) And keep the suggestions coming, everybody!

Man, call me a gloryhound or anything, but I did hope for that latest update to produce a few more reactions. Oh well...

A small update today, but one that was a lot of work to put together ;) After longingly looking at pictures of the new Helbrute kit this week, I surprised myself by not running out to buy the kit, but rather grabbing that unpainted DV Helbrute I still had sitting on my desk and finally starting to paint that instead -- and it's about time, too, seeing how it's been quite a while since the release...

Anyway, even though I am normally not a huge fan of the mutated, fleshy look, both the new Helbrute and the model from the DV box are amazing pieces. As I can attest to now, the DV one is certainly not a lot of fun to paint, though.

It took what felt like ages, but now it seems the model is slowly starting to come together. Take a look:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/22/596057-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Dark%20Vengeance%2C%20Dreadnought%2C%20Helbrute%2C%20Khorne.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/22/596058-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Dark%20Vengeance%2C%20Dreadnought%2C%20Helbrute%2C%20Khorne.JPG

Still quite a lot of work to do on this guy: He's missing virtually all the metallic highlights and lots and lots of small details, but I think he's finally getting there. I'd say the model's about 60-70% done at this point, and the final third of the way will hopefully move it from okay-ish to pretty cool, at the very least.

The one thing I am already fairly happy with is the face, though:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/22/596059-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Dark%20Vengeance%2C%20Dreadnought%2C%20Helbrute%2C%20Khorne.jpg

As you can see, I left the model mostly unconverted (which feels particularly lazy after seeing Biohazard's outstanding new Helbrute conversion ), but I really like the model a lot as is. I just got rid of the stubby melta arm -- the one truly bad piece of design on an otherwise beautiful piece, if you ask me.

Anyway, let me know what you think

The Helbrute looks to be coming together well, the autocannon conversion came out well.

As for the new Gladiators, i'd run with the idea of conversions using the Rampager Squad load out since they appear in the current WE fluff. Think that might be the way I go when I do a couple of Berzerker squads myself, mixing up the Rampager kit and the WE upgrade kit.

Cheers, mate! Incidentally, some of the guys already wield weapons fairly similar to the "official" Rampager kit: the twin swords, the chain glaive is slightly similar to the two-handed axe,... so building a meteor hammer would be the next logical step (plus it would be a nice challenge, kitbashing wise). I recently learned that it's an actual chinese weapon, btw! That really blew my mind!

On a related note, really looking forward to the prospect of you doing berzerker squads. Hmmm...

I think you've done well with the brute so far, can't wait to see it done. I've had a hellbrute for over a month now and just haven't gotten around to it, I'm glad as like you said I now want to bust out a massive conversion on it, along the line of biohazards work, probably requiring a new hellbrute and a maulerfiend ( whom I already have plans for the rest of it)

Also as usual I'm holding my breath to see some more gladiators, they are by far my favourite zerker squad I've ever seen

Yep, the Hellbrute is simple but effective. Have one to convert to TL HB and ML myself, as I bought all the bits required before they announced the new kit... grrr. As for the breacher concept, that's something I've mulled over too, so perhaps, bits allowing, there'll be a few more on show. Good work as usual KS !

Nice work on the DV 'brute... the release of the new kit finally got me to dig mine out and start assembling it, so I know what you mean in regards to "about time". He really doesn't look like fun to paint, but he's a pretty nice mini. I like what you've done with the gun arm, I'm not a fan of the stubby melta either.

Thanks a lot, guys! Thanks a lot, guys!  I won't lie to you, the Helbrute really doesn't come together quickly, from a painting perspective. It took several sittings for me to finally start feeling like I was actually getting somewhere rather than just ruining a model. Plus this is the kind of model you can work on for hours and hours without ever getting finished -- just so many tiny details.

That's why it's an amazing piece, though, and I really wanted to get it painted. I'm glad I went into this full of motivation, though: Anything less and I would probably have abandoned the model partway through the painting process...

Anyway, painted some of the details and added the (rather subtle) metallic highlights:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/23/596324-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Dark%20Vengeance%2C%20Dreadnought%2C%20Helbrute%2C%20Khorne.JPG

I also created a little "special effect" on the model's back:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/23/596326-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Dark%20Vengeance%2C%20Dreadnought%2C%20Helbrute%2C%20Khorne.JPG

Changes are now coming in small inrements rather than in leaps and bounds, which may just be a sign that the model's slowly getting finished, I guess? Still some more work to do, but I think I may be getting there.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/23/596327-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Dark%20Vengeance%2C%20Dreadnought%2C%20Helbrute%2C%20Khorne.JPG

Let me know what you think!  :)

EDIT: Aaaand he has a base:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/23/596384-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Dark%20Vengeance%2C%20Dreadnought%2C%20Helbrute%2C%20Khorne.JPG

The model's not yet finished, of course, but I figured handling this huge lump of plastic would be easier if I mounted it to a base. Plus all the areas that are hard to reach now are done anyway

Here he is with his colleagues:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/23/596386-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Dark%20Vengeance%2C%20Dreadnought%2C%20Helbrute%2C%20Khorne.JPG

That leaves me just one Helbrute short of that most elusive and devastating of formations: The Barbershop Helquartet of Dooooom! :biggrin.:

Thanks, guys!

"barbershop quartet of doom" I love it

Man, now that I've made up that title, I can't stop imagining these guys breaking into song at the most inopportune moments... :)

Well, they are mad so why not? :D

A small update today: After spending all weekend painting the Helbrute, I needed something to scratch my converter's itch, so I sat down and began work on a World Eaters gladiator wielding a meteor hammer. Here are the results so far:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/24/596848-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

I also cut my thumb working on him. Again. Oh well, Blood for the Blood God, and all that, I guess...

Let me know what you think!  :smile.:

Looking good. Liking the head of that hammer. Where is it from?

It's a mace head from the Chaos Knight kit.

Brilliant work Kraut, you managed to get the bit I was concerned about (the chain) working really well. I'd of liked to of seen a bit more hanging loose on the end but thats personal preference.

Speaking of personal preference, im not sure the head works. Not sure what exactly it is but something about it is off.
