Lots of Spartacus goings on here. If anything, halving the width of that crest, inverting it and running it at 30º over the face/forehead might be an option. Try it with a bit of paper first as always.

Love love love vorl. The powers of conversion are stong with this one yessss. bravo good sir  Khorne's Eternal Hunt is a worthy offering to the blood god. Khorne is pleased will grand you power over your foes in your next battle!!!

Thanks a lot, guys! Regarding the Secutor's helmet, again, I'll readily admit that it takes some getting used to. But my goal is not to make a gladiator perfectly representing the Roman version, but rather to come up with a look that the ancient version may have "mutated" into, if that makes any sense: All of this takes place more than 38,000 years later, after all. Maybe the inspiration didn't even come directly from Old Terra, but rather from any of its colonies, where the concept went through 30,000 years of permutation?

And there's also the fact that I like the helmet more and more the longer I look at it. Sorry guys, but I fear you'll have to live with it.

All this talk about gladiators has given me lots and lots of motivation to work on the squad, though, which is why I sat down yesterday to work on a WE version of the classic "Retiarius":

Still needs some fine tuning, but I think you get the idea! :smile.:

You've really captured the gladiator feel with that model. Great use of bitz and the left shoulder pad makes him look "historically" correct.

Can't wait to see what you bring out next so keep them coming :tu:

Cheers, guys!

@ forte: Well, at the very least, I appreciate the sentiment

UPDATE:

And only a couple of hours later, here's the mostly completed Retiarius conversion:

Sorry for the slightly blurry pics -- seems like the camera had other ideas

Thanks a lot, guys! Truth be told, I am looking forward to seeing these guys finished myself, so let's hope I can work up the motivation to get them painted sooner rather than later ;)

@ Tarvik: Hmm, the brilliantly corny Spartacus series would make for a better inspiration in this case. It's not exactly high culture, to be sure, but definitely a must-watch for World Eaters players ;)

Caught between a birthday in the family and my addiction to the wonderful video game Bravely Default this weekend, I was nevertheless able to make some time for painting. Here's the virtually finished Secutor:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/2/23/587376-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

Some final touchups may be in order, but I think you get the idea. Oh, and here's a less fuzzy look at the Retiarius, while we're at it:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/2/23/587379-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

I am actually stupidly happy about this guy, because he started out pretty lame but has now come into his own as a model, if you ask me. All thanks to all the inspiration I get from my various threats! Thanks a lot, guys!  :)

As always, let me know what you think! :)

Thanks a lot, guys! :)

@ Tarvik: Well, the series was a lot of fun, at least. "Capua, shall I begin?" Good times ;)

@ ElDuderino: "The ability to destory a planet is insignificant next to BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!" ;)

Hey everyone, here's a short update on the gladiator front: My rough draft for the whole squad, especially for the different types of gladiators to be featured in it, is as follows:

- Dimachaerus (two swords): done
- Dimachaerus with slightly different equipment (sword and axe): done
- Secutor (sword, shield, helmet): done
- Retiarius (net and spear): already built, next on the paintstation
- Glaivex (basically my own invention: the guy with the chain glaive): done (as of yesterday)
- Carnifex (again, my own invention: armed with a double-headed axe): Vorl Dustwalker is one of these, and I may or may not be working on another one...

Here's a little teaser picture of the finished stuff:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/2/27/588609-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

There are of course some other types of gladiators that might be interesting: a Caestus, wielding dual power fists? A Bestiarius, complete with chaos hound? An Andabatae, with a closed helmet, blindly charging at the enemy like a wild bull? We'll see....

And, in case you don't remember, I already converted an Essedarius, a chariot based fighter, some time ago:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/4/5/480858-Bike%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Hounds%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

Alright everyone, update time! Today I would like to talk some more about my growing gladiator squad, seeing how this project seems to almost have taken on a life of its own. Everything started with me building a first test model channelling the World Eaters' gladiatorial background. Then I built another one, and another one, but all in all, I mostly built these models to keep myself amused during bigger, more arduous projects. And then I recently unveiled my model for Vorl Dustwalker the champion to lead this gladiator squad:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/2/14/584949-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Lord%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Huntmaster.JPG

That last model, along with the growing squad, received some pretty positive comments on the various boards and forums I frequent, along with some pretty nifty suggestions and ideas for future gladiators: I had always seen ancient Roman gladiator types as a vague inspiration, of course. But I hadn’t delved too deeply into historical sources, fearing that the results would be too Roman and not World Eater-ly enough. But with the various suggestions by fellow hobbyists came a renewed interest in the classical side of things, so I checked out various Roman gladiator types and reflected on how to best adapt them to the world of 40k.

So, through the input of my fellow hobbyists and a strange chain of coincidences, the gladiator squad became a very interesting hobby project rather than an idle distraction. For the last days and weeks, I have tried to come up with new members for the squad, with each of them fighting in his own way, with a unique set of weapons. Some of the models I will show you today (and those that are yet to come) will be patterned after classical gladiators, while others will be less historically recognisable, but just as gladiatorial, I hope. Anyway, let’s take a look at where the squad is headed at the moment:

First up, a better look at the Secutor I already showed you:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590806-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590810-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590811-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590812-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

Transforming the historical design into something fitting the overall look and feel of my World Eaters did take some doing, but the model has really become a favourite of mine, to tell you the truth: I think this guy has a rather brooding, sinister presence, due to his pose as well  his “faceless” helmet.

Then there's this guy:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/8/535445-Chain%20Glaive%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne.JPG

I built this model quite some time ago. Like all of the gladiators so far, it was kitbashed from a mix of Khorne berzerker, (Chaos) Space Marine, Beastman and Chaos Marauder parts. Those bitz allowed me to achieve the partially armoured and slightly feral look I wanted. In this case, the model received a chain glaive, a fitting weapon for a follower of Khorne (even though the more recent fluff seems to have transformed it into a traditional weapon of the VIII legion).

Anyway, here's the finished model:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590796-Chain%20Glaive%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590797-Chain%20Glaive%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590798-Chain%20Glaive%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590799-Chain%20Glaive%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590800-Chain%20Glaive%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590801-Chain%20Glaive%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne.JPG

Once again, the model is wearing a tatoo reminiscent of Angron’s own warpaint:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590802-Chain%20Glaive%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne.JPG

I am calling this kind of gladiator a “Glaivex” for the chain glaive he wields. There wasn’t any similar gladiator in ancient Rome because glaives and halberds were apparently invented much later, but since it’s a weapon I definitely wanted to incorporate, I had to improvise. I still think he rather looks the part though:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590803-Chain%20Glaive%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne.JPG

So here are the two recent additions to the squad:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590819-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

As an added benefit, two additional models mean that the squad is now playable as well! It also looks fairly nice, if I do say so myself ;)

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590804-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.jpg

So what do we have so far? From left to right: A Secutor, Dimachaerus (wielding two swords), Vorl Dustwalker with his huge war axe, another Dimachaerus (sword and axe, this time) and the Glaivex. I am really happy with these, and yet I am already hard at work on the next additions for the squad. Some are even halfway presentable, no less:

You already know the Retiarius, built to serve as a playfellow for the Secutor:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590813-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590814-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

Again, getting this guy’s pose right took a bit of work, but I really couldn’t be any happier with the result! The model is basically finished at this point, and definitely next on the paint station!

But there’s more: Here’s a (slightly more WIP) model not patterned after a classical gladiator. I am calling this guy a “Carnifex”, after the latin word for executioner — rather than a huge alien-dinosaur, people ;)

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590817-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590815-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590816-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

Please ignore the blue grenades: a rather dubious colour choice taken by the previous owner…

Anyway, even though this guy will need some more sorting out, I think he already reads as a gladiator.

Here are the two next squad members together:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590818-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

And, like I said earlier, there are some more gladiator types that might warrant further exploration: The Cestus, the Bestiarius,... The sky's the limit here ;)

Another important thing to note is that the gladiator theme is something that gets repeated throughout the army, even beyond this particular squad. The two visual leitmotifs for my World Eaters are that they are hunters (adorning themselves with trophies and pelts of their prey as well as acessories like war horns, skinning knives etc.) and that they are gladiators, wielding weapons and equipment that sometimes seem slightly gladiatorial. Brother Hokar would be an example of that:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/1/4/448738-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Lords%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marrines%2C%20Conversion.JPG

Or, indeed, Lord Captain Lorimar himself:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/1/9/450712-Axe%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Lord%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Huntmaster%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

For now, though, thinking about new models to add to my gladiator squad and getting them built and painted serves two objectives: It allows me to finish models that I am really happy with, and it gets me in the mood for building (and painting!) more World Eaters, and that’s always a good thing, right?

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590805-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

In closing, let me say that this project wouldn’t have become so much fun without the constant feedback from fellow hobbyists. So thanks to all those who have helped shape these models, and please keep those comments coming!

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Wow, your captain lorimar has a sense of gravitas about him, job well done on that conversion!  The only thing that seems a bit off about it is the placement of his feet on the rock- maybe if you had some rubble under his feet to even the surface out? It looks a little unstable as is.

You know, a great source of inspiration for gladiators was the old Xbox game called Gladius.

Amazingly addictive game for something turn-based but was so strategic.

They used secutors, legionnaires and various other forms of gladiators you have represented nicely.

A few not seen yet, include a murmillo, which used a throwing shield in the style of Kung Lao, and was a 'fish/aquatic unit', often paired up with the netarius as fish and fisherman.

Another was the Samnites. Not a great deal of historical background on these, however in game they were the heaviest class, and usually wore a crested thracian helmet similar to your secutor, and were huge, ogryn sized chaps with schutum shields and a large heavy sword, usually a falchion or oversized scimitar.

Anyway, if you can get a copy of that game (there may be a PC port too) I HIGHLY recommend it.

By the way, a great piece for your gladiators may be the old school shoulderpad with the flayed face on it. If you Greenstuffed the skin and pad seamlessly, it would look great as an ornate brass pad...

Fantastic work as ever, and I'm only getting more inspired to work on some Khornate renegades based on a gladiatorial school gone wrong... :)

Thanks a lot, guys! :)

@ MasterBuilder: That sounds pretty interesting, and those suggestions are very cool! As a matter of fact, I also came across the gladiator faction from Urban War yesterday, and some of the artwork for those guys is super-inspirational as well -- it's a bit of a shame that the models, cool as they are, are nowhere near as amazing as the art.

I received some extremely helpful suggestions from fellow World Eaters aficionado Biohazard for my Carnifex model, and implementing them instantly improved the model 100%, if you ask me:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/6/591060-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/6/591062-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/6/591061-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

I've also taken the time to clean up the conversion and glue everything, save for the left arm, together. Fellow hobbyist Legio Ultra also suggested replacing the dagger in the left hand with a severed head -- that might be a pretty good idea, actually...

The Bestiarius is the next conversion I am working on. Now, after giving it a bit of thought, I am going to re-activate an earlier idea for this guy: A rather long time ago, I built a bigger base with three slots. My idea was that a Huntmaster and his two chaos hounds could be slotted into the base to make up some kind of mini-diorama. Seeing how this perfectly fits my idea for the Bestiarius, I think I'll just give that base to him! Here's a couple of WIP shots:

First up, an early mockup of the Bestiarius himself. Nothing's glued together yet:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/6/591054-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

The one thing I have already decided is that he will be grasping the chain leashes of two chaos hounds in his right fist:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/6/591055-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

The whole diorama will look like this:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/6/591058-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/6/591056-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/6/591057-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

Of course there will be the chains running between the gladiator's fist and the chaos hounds: I expect that effect will be rather tricky to achieve ;) But the end result should give me a mini-diorama that should look nice enough, with each of the three models still playable as separate models, should the need arise. In fact, if I ever get around to painting more chaos hounds, the Bestiarius would make a perfect "squad leader" for them.

On a related note, maybe you can help me out once again: The head currently used on the WIP model comes from the WFB Chaos Chariot, but I am not perfectly sure I'll keep it. I am currently looking at several heads from my bitzbox as possible choices for the Bestiarius, and maybe you lot can help me narrow it down:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/6/591059_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

I. One of my favourite WoC heads, and it certainly looks suitably brutal and feral for the Bestiarius.
II. A Skullcrusher head (minus the "bunny ears") that has both the Khornate look and the hoplite feel typical of some gladiator types.
III. A pretty cool Chaos Marauder head -- my fear with this is that the model might end up looking too much like a WFB Marauder, though...
IV. A CSM rebreather head -- could be used for a more futuristic look.
V. Another option would be to make the Bestiarius look more feral, just like the beasts he leads into battle. This could be achieved by using either this SW head...
VI. ...or the truly bestial Khornate head from the chariot kit. While I love the snarling face, though, the head and neck seem a bit too large to comfortably fit the body.

Anyway, what do you think? I'd be glad to hear any ideas you might have!  :)

I actually really like his current head, but I can see that it might look better on another type of Gladiator.

Out of the six you've presented as alternate heads, for a 40K World Eaters Bestiarius, I would say that the 6th head, the Khorne Charioteer, would be perfect for a marine who spends his time with beasts. Feral is the way to go with that guy, IMHO.
