Here’s a close-up of one of the tac marines:

Comments welcome.

Love the paintjob OMG! The red/orange pipes & joints between the armour look particularly striking!

Any chance you would share your recipe? I've just been given Ferrus for Xmas and would love to get his armour looking like yours.

Hello Urza:

Here’s the basic process for these guys:

  • I start off with a coat of GW’s white spray. I always water down my paints a bit so they go on thinner than they come from the factory.  That allows the paint to naturally flow into the details leaving a natural highlight.
  • I start with the joints in the armor with GW’s Blazing Orange (do they still make that?) then give it a little Carroburg Crimson in the darkest corners.  I might pick up the highlights with Fiery Orange if it gets too red.
  • The base coat is Vallejo’s Gunmettal Blue – which was the perfect find given the effect I wanted (again based on FW’s studio model of Farris Manus).

  • I then do all the raised portions of the armor in GW’s Lead Belcher.
  • The armor plates get an ample coating of Nuln Oil.
  • The highlights are then brought out with a mix of 1:1 Gunmetal Blue & Vallejo White.  I put very little paint on the brush and keep building until I get the highlight I want.
  • Last I finish off the raised metallic sections & armor bolts with Mithril Silver.

That’s about it really - nothing tricky about it.  You can’t get too crazy when you’re on a tight schedule.

Cheers, -OMG

Thanks OMG!

I've just taken a look at the Vallejo Gunmetal Blue online and it's a fantastic looking colour! I wish I had of known about it before I started painting my Iron Hands.

As it is, I already have two 20-Man Tactical Squads with different colour schemes: One in traditional Iron Hands (black with silver trim) and the other in the 'new' Heresy Scheme (dark silver with black pauldrons & silver trim).

I'm not sure if I should got for yet another scheme at the risk of my army not looking like a cohesive force! :D

@Urza- could always explain away the subtle differences in color as another way clans distinguish themselves from each other.

@OMG- thanks for the paint recipe! I'm looking forward to painting my legionnaires this way.

Here's completed pics of the model.  Note the gloss coat isn't 100% dry but I couldn't wait - and I'm doing this over my lunch break.

Love this guy! I saw the originals a few weeks ago on FB and was thinking about buying a set to convert into cheap Legio Cybernetica Castellax Battle Automata.

Was the conversion process fairly straightforward?

In truth, it’s almost difficult to call this a conversion since there are more omissions than modifications.  The model is basically stock other than the head & arms replacements.  If you are really interested in the mortis pattern, the autocannons were taken from the Aegis Defense Line kit.  I had to separate the guns, cut out the swivel joint and bring the barrels closer together.  I left the ammo feeders alone as I thought they added more strength & weight.

I wish I could say more but the rest of what makes it look like a Legio Cybernetica unit is all in the paint.

What’s missing are the shoulder pads, arms and arm mounted weapon bits.  I agree with others who’ve stated that the bulky arms make the stock build look like a ‘gumby’ marine.  Using the arms alone or replacing a lower arm bit with a weapon replacement gets rid of the excess bulk and gives you a much better looking model.

So have fun with it.  I have plans on adding more of these guys to the army before too long. My 2.5K list has a second mortis so that’s a minimal addition when the time comes.

Cheers, -OMG

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello legionaries - time for an update.

Here's my WIP tray - now thankfully a lot further along than it was.

If you note the back left corner you can see a nigh complete tactical support marine with a vokite calvier. I'm looking forward to seeing those two squads completed.  But on that front, the arms for these marines are all assembled & in various stages of painting.  I'm feeling good that all four of the tac squads will be done in the next couple of weeks or so.

Here's a better pic of the sgt. from the first tactical squad:

Also, here are two complete Heavy Support marines w/autocannons.  I'm especially happy with how the sgt. turned out.

These are easily some of my favorite marine models ever.  The medusan immortal torsos are my favorite IH models (though I haven't been disappointed by any of them) and the autocannons w/the ammo feeders fit well with the bulkier armor.  The rest of that squad is based & torso's are all painted.  It's a pain to get the ammo feeds to fit but after a few hours (and many failed attempts) with a blow dryer I have all of them ready to go.  Just finish painting the arms, pads & weapons and that squad's done.

That means all the standing infantry might get done in the next 14 days or so.  That's the goal.

In other progress, I went ahead an purchased another squad of 10 medusan immortal torsos to replace those I used on the heavy support guys.  I also bought an IH Contemptor dread.  I wasn't going to try to add more to my workload but all the progress is encouraging.  If I have time I'll paint those up as well for the Adepticon events.  - most likely as a revision to my Zone Mortalis list.

Anyway - cheers as always. -OMG

There's so much awesome in this thread - I'm a particular fan of those autocannon troopers - those guns suit the Immortal bodies immensly.

Oh btw, if you're considering adding more than one Contemptor, I'd suggest combining Death Guard & Iron Hands Contemptor models. The death guard version has a really steampunky vibe, and seeing as you seem to have an eye for conversions, it could look supremely badass.

Very good idea. Removing all the DG bits would be rough as I'm a big fan of that army as well. This project could have very easily gone that way but IH won out.

I will be sad when I have to kill these models... while Im on the Traitors side msn-wink.gif

You'll be counting your dead long before I will mine - but, historically speaking, the Dropsite Massacre didn't bode well for the IH. sad.png I guess we'll just have to rewrite history.

@Deathspectre- indeed, I too will be trying this method. To be fair though, the artist who painted forge world's ferrus manus was the one who inspired OMG. OMG just took a step further.

All props to the studio artist who painted that Ferrus Manus model - he really sold me on pre-heresy IH.  Cheers to you wherever you are.

Here's a WIP shot of the Medusa Mortar, in keeping with the interspersed Adeptus Mechanicus themed units.
