The Lost and Forgotten: Building the II Legion

I'm actually more a fan of #1. It's the most . . . Space Marine-ish of the three. #3 is better than #2, but it's also the most . . . anime-ish of the three. It's certainly not the art style, but the . . . Jesus, I'm having a difficult time explaining. I don't know, like the tone of the image or something. I see #3 and I think anime, while I see #1 and I think Space Marine.

I'm between 1 and 3, as they definitely look more like he's aiming his pistol rather than glancing over as he's blindly pulling the trigger. Then there's the rage: one is more understated and the other is more in your face.

As a side-note, 1 looks more like a chisel-jawed man, and 3 has a younger, more angular look to him.

Excerpt from: Meditation on the Great Ocean
“Required text for Initiates to the Thunder Legion”

Why shouldn’t we as beings with terrible gifts utilize all facets of that power, master them in order to defend our Families and countrymen?

It is true that some amongst the Colleges still choose to master the arts of Pyromancy, Telekenisis, Biomancy and Telepathy.

Some amongst your number may even think that through mastery, a psychic power can be used safely.

They are fools.

There is no safe Discipline of psychic power, but there is a responsible choice.  And that is why for 500 years the Astral College has promoted the focused study of Precognition.

Every other discipline draws power from the immaterium to affect the material universe, whether it be to lift a boulder, pluck a thought from an enemies mind, heal wounds or to torch an adversary alive. Each of these disciplines turns a pysker into a conduit through which energy flows from the warp to real space. But there is more than simply energy that seeks to come to this plain of reality; hungry things lurk on the other side of the door an unwary psyker creates.

And a door once opened is hard to close.

The mastery of Precognition is still perilous but the method through which the gifted might utilize this power is distinct on a fundamental level. In order to skim the great Ocean for lines of fate with which a seeker may observe the ebb and flow of time and movement, a Student of Precognition must thrust their consciousness momentarily into the aether.

There they may find the knowledge they seek and with it affect the outcome of events unfolding around them.  Or they may be devoured by the selfsame predators that plague the other disciplines.

The Distinction is this. Where one draws power through themselves from the warp, the other see’s much but takes naught but knowledge back with him.  If the resolve of either fails, one unleashes horrors upon the world around him, the other drops dead a soulless husk.

And there lies the distinction, if you must risk you soul, bear the responsibilities and consequences onto yourself, not the world around you.

Learn this lesson well.

That was just a little bit on why the Thunder Legion use certain psychic powers but not others.

As for their relationship with the other legions, There are a few that are fairly strait forward.

I Legion: Rivals from the unification era, this has translated and amplified to the Great Crusade. I don't see Icarion and the Lion really hating each other, it's more that in spite of their potential friendship, their legions can't stand one another

VI Legion: see below

XV Legion: Magnus has nothing but contempt for Icarion's view of the Psychic power, and Icarion afraid f what Magnus is capable of. For the most part, their Legions each view their own method as superior, but a few bridges of common ground exist. The Astral Colleges mostly focus around the interests of the Corvidea and so I would imagine that some scholarly common ground and maybe even friendship exists here.

Russ.

Well, if you have read the Siege of Madrigal Excerpt, then you know that Russ was present during those events, but even in the official Imperial Record, his actions aren't recorded, and the nature of his presence is not explained. It's merely theorized that he was involved in the sanction of the II Legion.

Okay.

So here are a few things for you to think about. Russ was found 2nd, Icarion 3rd, these two brothers were close. Really close, Icarion and Russ shared a mutual distrust of uncontrolled psychic potential.  In fact Icarion might have been one of Russ' only brothers with whom he shared genuine admiration.

Now, I don't like the idea that the Wolves are the Emperors executioners. In fact we don't know that the emperor ever intended them to be his executions. What we do know is that some time before the Night of the Wolf, something happened which made the Wolves and Russ start to view themselves as the Emperor's executioners.

I want the Destruction of the II Legion to be that defining moment for the Wolves and Russ. We know that the Emperor asked Russ and his legion to do something at the siege of Madrigal but we don't know what. What if the wolves start to see themselves as His executions not because of what he asked them but as a form of penance or atonement for something they couldn't bring themselves to do.

Russ has a secret.

Something he did, or didn't do during the Siege, and so from that moment forward He and his Wolves will seek out the hardest fights, will choose to Become the executioners because that is the only path left open to them.

I would love to hear you general thoughts to this theory crafting.

Number 1 for the pics.

I'm liking the psychic fluff. They know it is dangerous, so they limit the danger as best they can.

What if Russ was the one that cleaned up the other legion's forces? He was too late to help the 2nd, but he avenged them and killed the other legionary forces that had been there before him to kill the 2nd.

Almost ready Icarion model.

Model is 6cm height to the top of the head.

Lots of work, lots of fun.
Hope you like it!

I think it should be a combination of 1 and 3.

I would say no to this.  Having Russ spill the blood of other legions as they were enacting the Emperor's judgement would get him censored and suffer the same fate.  I think him being the one who has to enact the judgement, even if reluctantly, is far more powerful.  It resonates with the scene in Prospero Burns where he is pleading through the Skald for Magnus to not force his hand.

And this is my 666th post.  Fitting it would be about a censured legion.

One idea I had put forth in an alternate Heresy thread was that maybe Russ was simply involved, and happened to be the one to put in the killing blow. He was not chosen for it, he was not the most able. He just happened to be there, by the vagaries of fate and battle.

And afterwards, his posturing and his Legion's outlook, was nothing more than a coping mechanism to deal with what he had done.

I say this because it could fit with what you say, but it is up to you if you want to use that.

Okay, that primarch looks ACE. The only thing that I saw I found to look "wrong" is the prorpocions. It feels like his legs are shorter or the same length as his torso and his arms. It might just be the perspective from the camera, but that is what I thought.

Nonetheless the sculpting is beautiful.

Honestly, the only thing that might make it look off is that (like all Astartes) He has a very broad chest and shoulders. Other than that Looking at this picture, his proportions seem pretty spot on.

I have to say Marcelle, you really have done a fantastic job. I keep gushing over all of the little details you have worked in, from the pose of his zen hand to the whole belt and especially his back! I'm really looking forward to seeing him finished and with his Helmet. I am itching to get him painted and stomping some loyalists.

This is really making me want to come up with stats for him now... I don't think I can wait for Magnus' rules...

He looks fantastic. Maybe look at Lorgars rules (the chaos version), and build from there.

Just a thought, what if the Night of Wolf had a bit more significance. What if the World Eaters had been part of the II's end, and, gripped by the nails, acted more savagely then previously seen. This could hint to an extra level of of Rus actions, especially if he was forced to fight alongside the World Eaters against his friend. Obviously, do not want to tried to much on established background but it may be nice to see the fall of the II hint at possible future fractions between other legions.

Perhaps Russ is poised to strike the killing blow against Icarion, but in a moment of weakness he can't actually bring himself to finish his wayward brother. And then, seeing Russ unable to slay his beloved sibling, Icarion smiles...

"Forgive me Leman."

...And draws the knife across his throat.

With one final act of love Icarion spares Russ the pain of killing his kin, finishing the job for him. When the other Primarchs catch up with Leman, they find him knelt solemnly over Icarion's body, stony-faced and grim as the grave.

The Second Son is dead, the Thunder Legion undone. Madrigal is left a ruin, it's atmosphere choked with shipwrecks and it's civilization burned from existence. The remaining Primarchs swear to never speak of their lost kin and move on. Slowly, the Imperium forgets.

You beat me to it Sanguinius - and phrased it far better than I could have. I like this scenario a lot. Russ, the self-styled loyalist of sons, is unable to follow the Emperor's orders and strike down (/capture) his closest brother. Forseeing the end of his legion (and the fall of the Imperium?) Icaryon ends his own life, leaving Russ in torment, and refusing to ever let his loyalty slip again. Sounds great to me!

Am I right in assuming Icaryon will end up setting himself against the emperor when he discovers the bargain the Emperor made with Chaos in the creation of the Primarchs? I think you said something to that effect once. It makes their fall even more tragic if they were ultimately correct to doubt the emperor...

The sculpt is fantastic, and the background very exciting! When do we get to hear more?

I'm really glad everyone is so enthusiastic about the project so far, and there should be sizable army update in the next few weeks as a finish up some other projects on my bench (Farsight Enclave sculpt).

However, that's not the point of this post.

Due to some truly unfortunate circumstances, it looks like I won't be able to use Marcelle's sculpt of Icarion. I am however now 'in the market' for another miniature sculptor to begin work on Icarion 2.0. I would really appreciate any recommendations on sculptors or sculpting services you lot have heard of. I have been very satisfied working with Marcelle and hope to find a sculptor who is just as passionate and talented as he is.
