XIV Assault Squad

Vexillarius - Scaffir "Iron Hand" Smidte - Scion of Ferrus

Vexillarius Smidte has been Sergeant Vor's second-in-command for decades. His style of command is cold and ruthless, and XIV Squad´s brothers originally dubbed him ´the Iron Fist´ to reflect his personality. As fate would have it, Brother Smidte lost his left hand during a joint operation with the Iron Hands chapter against the hated Emperor's Children traitors. He received a temporary battlefield bionic from an Iron Hands techmarine, which he kept throughout the campaign to honour the Techmarine. Soon after, it was replaced with a more sophisticated bionic that accepts his armour without modifications, but by then his brothers had already changed his callsign to ´Iron Hand´.

Scion of Ferrus, I tried to incorporate the -very detailed- fluff you wrote as best I could, and feel like I kept true to the essence of it. I hope you like it!

@Augustus b'Raass - I really love them especially with the paint on! No worries on the well amalgamated fluff, it's your creation, even if you do misquote that the Imperial Fist bionic replacement is more sophisticated than an Iron Hands one:biggrin.:  tsk, tsk, Second Founding Chapters and their misconceptions:wink:

I did add an amendment or two above techmarines deal with the holy bionics whilst apothecaries deal with the Hated Flesh.

I especially liked the Scmidte's red aquilla and also the pose of Pantimion's turned Mk III head looks very raptor'ish.

Choices choices.

I vowed to paint my Typhon in the Tale of 20 Hobbyists thread three months in a row, and I failed three months in a row because I got distracted by KDK. So I vowed it in Loyalty and Treachery. Unfortunately I got distracted painting the 30 IF tournament marines.... and then Captain Semper reminded us today that we only have two more days to finish our vows to get Chaplain Badges. Which I wanted.

So I guess tomorrow I´ll be turning this - which has been in that state for over a month - into something finished....

@ Mechanist: That's awesome! Haha I'm very happy you shared that, as I was wondering where you got all those names from.

@ Atia: Sorry for working so hard? ;) I guess you'll have to visit more often :D

@ Kordhal: Thanks buddy! It´s always a compliment to hear of frater going through my whole thread like you just have.

@ Scion of Ferrus: Thanks for the corrections and the comment, buddy! I'll make sure to edit those into the fluff. One request though: would you mind putting my quote in hidden brackets? Frater quoting whole picture lines only to comment on them is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, and seeing it in my thread made me go :wallbash: I know, it's more me than anyone else, but still: please? I'd much appreciate it! :D

Good luck! What will you do with the extra day?

Seriously though, that should be an awesome addition to your amazing Fists army. I hope you end up with a result you're happy with when the paint's dry - I continue to be blown away by how quickly you turn out your models.

Oh those are some lookers!

Sigfrid is an awesome use of bits. Definitely love these techmarines testing out new weaponry.

The new comms guy is great too. Love that shield with the pose.

Also digging these unique backpacks you have made for them. I may need to copy a few of those.

XII Devastator is looking good so far. Although maybe I'm a wee bit biased ;)

Love the techmarine bits AND vigil-pattern shield on Fisch.

Also like the gorgets on the two grav-cannon Marines, sets them apart from their squad mates (other than, y'know, the giant guns).

In the nick of time for the Chaplain deadline for the Loyalty & Treachery forum event, I finished the Typhon:

@ Sgt. Blank: Haha, well, turns out I did need two days. Yesterday I got in about six hours of painting on the Typhon, but that didn't see it finished. Today I had to visit my dad for his birthday, play a game of 40K at my local shop, and vote for the general elections. But those two last hourse I did  get to paint turned out to be quite enough. :smile.:
Thanks though, for the kind words, buddy

@ hushrong: Thanks! Yeah his shield is there so he can focus more on acquiring targets for the grav cannons. Would you need a tut for the backpacks?

@ SalvationofReason: Cheers buddy! I had no idea the shields had a pattern. Now I do :biggrin.: Thanks also for noticing the gorgets on the two guys - I love how the new DeathWatch helmets fit inside those!

@ kizzdougs: Cheers! It's funny how almost everyone refers to those as 'chaos backpacks'. Yet that particular model has no chaos iconography on it whatsoever. :smile.:

@ Sagentus: My thanks, mate! I hope it reached your expectations!

Must admit that it looks awesome, the weathering is appropriately applied except for the back exhaustsof the tank, which are a bit too clean in my opinion... But apart from that nitpick great work, specially considering the speed with which you painted it!

You´re absolutely right! You made me realize that I didn´t do weathering on the whole engine exhaust! The pressure was so high to finish I simply forgot. So I went back to it and fixed it, and will upload pics tomorrow. It´s too late now. :tu: Thanks for telling me, Traitor!

I was going to say it looks like you forgot the back end. Otherwise, outstanding job weathering. The only thing it needs is a half dozen lascannon holes in it, with dead loyalists hanging out of it. ;)

You missed a spot. It's right there. Right. There! No, over there.

Never mind.

^_^

Seriously, this beast is inspiring! Thank you for sharing you talent with us!

Sweet Jeebus in a chicken basket you are a painting machine!

I am SO stealing "Sweet Jeebus in a chicken basket"  Thank you.

Augustus, I'm sure you answered this somewhere a long the way, but what is your formula for the yellow? Its pretty stunning.

Just gorgeous! And exactly the right amount of weathering too - enough that it looks like the tank has neen doing work, but not enough for the cqretskers to be considered negligent.

Your models are an inspiration!

Wow ! I love this heavy Tank and I was wondering if I should take one myself ..You totaly convince me ! This painting job is awesome, the weathering is great too ! And needless to say that your devestator sergent once painting is far beyond expectation :o one of my favorite model on this thread. Keep it comming man ;)

for the time scale that's amazing, I didn;t notice the back until others pointed it out but it's cool you've fixed it. I would say the weapon barrels also seam a bit clean and shiny. But great work and you never compromise on quality despite churning these guys out.

Wow! Thanks, everyone, for the mutlitude of comments! Many of you noticed the lack of weathering on the rear of the Typhon, and some noticed the lack of smoke-  and heat stains on the barrel of the gun. So I fixed that yesterday after posting the tank, and took pictures of it today. I also did some detail shots of, well, details. :smile.:

Smoke (black) and heat (blue) stains on the barrel end.

Detail shot of the iconography on the shield.
Left, top to bottom: Chapter Badge, Legion Number, Imperial Aquila, Gold Tower symbol to signify participation in the Defence of Terra.
Right, top to bottom: Bas Relief Legion Symbol, Templar Badge to signify veteran status

You'll also notice the concave angle of the port side tracks. This unfortunately, is an issue I could not for the life of me resolve without creating a massive gap between the hull and the tracks.

To add to the feel of the tank being on Campaign, I added some gas/water canisters on top of the tank. :smile.:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Imperial%20Fists/temporary_zpsyd0vufvl.jpg

Again, in an attempt to convey a sense of being on campaign, I added some rubberized cloth and some rust-damaged towing cables

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d185/mkruijff/Imperial%20Fists/temporary_zpswzogzzxa.jpg

As this tank is active after the heresy, I decided I wanted it to have a 40K copula - so I removed the vision slits from the raised area and dremelled out the resin copula, to make room for the plastic 40K design.

Again, thanks for looking! Your comments - more even than your likes - are most welcome and motivational. :smile.:

@ rednekkboss: Haha bring them to me and it shall be done.

@ lionofjudah: BOOM!

@ Kierdale: Thanks buddy! Yeah, I clanged this one out.

@ SalvationOfReason: Eh, no worries, buddy!

@ Sgt. Blank: Cheers, mate - that was fast, indeed - even for me?

@ TheOneTrueZon: Like rednekkboss, I'll steal that one.

@ Race Bannon: That's really nice of you to say, buddy! Thanks! It's only fair to post my efforts, after mooching off all the inspirational blogs on here, wouldn't you say?

@ Biohazard: Thanks, friend. When can we see another character of yours?

@ rednekkboss: The recipe for yellow is fairly simple: GW Averland Sunset as a base. Then I use my airbrush to shade all corners with a 1:1 mix of GW Averland Sunset and VMA Hull Red. For non-vehicle miniatures, I then give it a light, 80o downward zenithal spray of very thinned-down GW Averland Sunset again.

@ coldfyre: YAS! That's exactly what I was going for (both the weathering and the inspiration), so I'm glad it worked out :smile.:

@ malcharion: Get one! They're awesome to paint and to play with. Building though.... not so much. Although with the recent casts having the tracks sculpted on already, that issue is lessened.

@ Mechanist: Glad you like it. I agree it's not perfect at all, but I just had to finish it, and it was really bothering me that I had procrastinated on it so much. Do you like the barrel like this? ^^

@ Sagentus: I assume you meant the barrel and not the turret, so I hope you like what I did to it. :smile.:
