@ChromeZephyr:  Yes it's an army theme.  All the vets get them.

@jimmy:  Yeah bikes are an awesome platform to work from. Until the Apothecary gets a character status, I'll hold off building one for myself (just making excuses cuz I do think he deserves one too!  Perhaps with a battlefield table haaa!).  Having a side care for one of the landtrain-bikes would be fun too.  I haven't yet exhausted ideas for them.  Unique... well the first one was.  Until I built the remaining 3. It was an interesting exercise.

BUT they are pricey. :/  Just in raw materials, each bike is hitting close to $300-ish assuming I get full kits for the parts heh.  Anyone have spare MOTR prows to donate?  XD

Sammael is pretty unique.  His silhouette and prow really stands out.  And his height.  If you were going to do the jetbike route, perhaps a more simplistic redesign is in order.  If you are going ground, the height disparity will show.  Sammael will stand out pretty easily even when placed with all my bikes.

Playing with the overall shape of the bike is important for that.  This was a MOTF commission I did many years ago for someone (after the first landtrain-bike).  It's simple but different too.

@daemoneclaw:  Yeah, love those!  The gunblade was cool, but more of a shock weapon than an actual gun.  To be honest the blade was an afterthought.  It was really originally meant to be just a sniper.  But having the blade had more ties to Zero too... so heck.  It looks awesome.

@olisredan:  Shhhh! I'm NOT batman!

Its like a breath of fresh air when Skuzzy is having fun building custom and converted models. Always a pleasure.

I love the fact that the Sniper can use his tabard to figure out wind speed and direction if needed ;)

@incinerator:  Ahhh... yes... sorry the 3 different names threw me on a loop.  I was thinking of characters.  Axton would be a techmarine with thunderfire cannon methinks....

@master toddius:  Hahaha didin't think of that.  I do actually do a lot of modelling in my free time.  Not all are relevant here though.  I really need to start painting again... sometime.

Haha yeah man that's sweet lots of good ideas :)

tell me about it dude I have here a chopped up razor wing jet fighter that I fitted onto a wraith knight hoping to make a 40k dark eldar Starscream.

As usaul it fits perfect but I will never have the patience or time to do the detailing, you got a talent that's forsure!

Eldar is... difficult to do, especially when dealing with all the curves.  But also that's part of the nature of hard edge modeling... I do a LOT of sanding and filing, especially around edges, to get the surfaces smooth.  One of my favourite materials is the Tamiya Putty (basic and white which is finer).  It is a toothpaste type and I spread it around.  Once dry, it can be sanded down.  It's like liquid green stuff and while it is brittle, it gets a great surface finish after sanding.  It can be thinned down using the Tamiya Thin Cement.

  • 1 month later...

Over the week I made a model for a friend for his birthday. He runs a Night Lords army, so I thought to do a daemonized model for him. There is a bit of the Gal Vorbak influence in it but it does follow my old Daemonhost model a bit. I just really wanted to do bat wings on his head.

I prepped for the head using gargoyle wings. These will go onto a helmet.

Using some leftover legs, I chopped one down and prepped the legs.

I used the rear claws from the wings to make the feet and joined the body. I filled in the spaces with some basic forms using Green Stuff. I used some Tyranid parts for the spine.

http://scuzworks.com/SL40K/WIP/Raptor/5.jpg

I attached the wings to a possessed head and sculpted some neck muscles on.

I detailed the waist. The tubes were made using a tube tool then I sculpted in the sides.

I added some crotch details and shoulder muscles, bulking up the torso a bit.

Ohhh, that is AMAZING! At first I wasn't sure about the wings on the helmet, but it just looks so right on the finished model!

The Termie lightning claws don't work, though, in my opinion: Either go with the mutated chainswords or maybe try some Raptor/Warp Talon claws?!

Anyway, what a fantastic interpretation of a Raptor!

Oops.. the images didn't show at the end... here they are for your viewing convenience...:P

The arms... were not part of the package.  I only gave my friend the completed body.  He can settle the arms himself...:P

And now I take on... Centurions.

I don't like the dreadnought feet.  I can see why GW did it, but it looks... clunky.  It looks like they will trip over themselves, so yeah, the side feet has to go.

http://scuzworks.com/SL40K/WIP/centurions/2.jpg

http://scuzworks.com/SL40K/WIP/centurions/3.jpg

Doing a dry fit, I figured that the toes are too short, so I extended them using pla-plates and putty.

http://scuzworks.com/SL40K/WIP/centurions/4.jpg

http://scuzworks.com/SL40K/WIP/centurions/5.jpg

Just cutting off the side toes leaves a large blank area, so I put in some servos.

As a mock, I assembled 2 centurions, mostly.  I cut one up to see if it could follow similar design principles to my Cain, but it turned out looking more like an industrial suit than a combat unit (I might use it in the future...).

http://scuzworks.com/SL40K/WIP/centurions/12.jpg

Playing around, I think I like the idea of just guns, rather than having arms.

Yeap...  I have seen many versions of that.  I think they can be quite nice.  The mechanics has that mech that has it too...  It's not the shoulder mounts that I find off, but rather the proportions of the arms.  Being mechanical arms, they can be... more streamlined and functional.  Art wise, they are great, model wise, I think they are too large.  I'm thinking of this to make the design more functional, but I need to figure out the rest of the look.
