SS arms would work, but you also need hands for them and I don't have any. However, you make a good point(pun intended :teehee:) so I decided to take the sword to them... Or the Xacto ;)

Obviously this is just the initial proof of concept and I still have to fill/cover the gap where I "bent" the elbow, but you can see the final effect it will have.

Here's a head on shot as well

So I've put a hold on the Centurions for the moment as I've been working furiously to complete my Challenge Vow in the PCA forum. Here's a bit of what I've been doing. Forgive the poor quality of the pics, no time for proper ones, back to painting!

A few shots of the Assault Marines

And some OSL on the Jump Packs

Though the bad lighting muddies up their faces, the main purpose was to ensure you could see their eyes.

Hard to really judge the faces if the pics are muddied.  They're irritatingly defined by subtleties.  :dry.:

But I can judge the eyes, and you still gotta work on those.  They're a nightmare, but well done eyes really sell it.  What you've done there is paint the eyes and the lower eyelids.  It's hard as hell to tell with the naked eye when you're painting.  I have to use my magnifying headset for that particular annoyance.

You got a bit of brown from one guy's hair on to his forehead.

The basing?  C'mon, man.

The OSL on the jump pack is excellent.  Love the minimalist approach, and you pulled it off great.

Your black highlights are looking better.  One point to look out for: try not to let the highlights of the mouth grill and eye lines to touch.  It looks...creepy. :blink.:

And although in my gut I feel like it should look wrong, that trick you took from Flint by painting that chest piece white is very clever.  I guess I owe her credit for that, but you proved that it wasn't a fluke. :laugh.:

Hm, I may have to do something similar one day, when I get around to painting Honor Guard...

Well like I said the lighting is horribly bad, I really just wanted to show that I made the eyes the right shape and the pupils in the right spot :p  They are hands down some of the best eye's I've every painted and due in no small part to the new brushes I got a few months back (Winsor and Newton Series 7's)  When I get some better pics of them I think you'll like them better ;)

That spot of brown is actually a shadow lol. My desk lamp is literally right over them

On thing I learned while painting the scouts faces, is damn are they ugly!   I only have had the old scouts so these are the first of the plastic ones I've done.

You know damn well that I flock all my bases ;)

Glad you like the OSL!

Noted on the highlights, I've been going back into areas that I slip on and retouching them with some VMC black. Amazing paint that is, goes on so flat you can't tell where you touched it up.

Yeah, I'm leaning more and more on Vallejo these days.  The fact that they had an almost perfect match to Bleached Bone earns a lot of my future business, too.  God, I'm gonna hate replacing and remixing my grays.  :dry.:

And yup, the Scout faces are hideous.  There's a reason I went through the nightmare of drilling out their torsos to use Marine heads instead :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok an update on these Centurion conversions After Firepower's comments I realized that the lack of dynamic posing did bother me, and not only that but made it difficult to position these guys in a believable way. :tongue.:

I've also been working on the cannons and making them less "arm sticking straight out" and more like the regular heavy weapons. So here are some full mock ups of the new CTDA.

Warning, this post is a bit pic heavy

First up a shot of the first go at using greenstuff to create a "sleeve" for their arms to help hold onto the guns.

The front guy in this pic is converted from the DV box

Here you can see another angle of the sleeve I greenstuffed

And the sgt and friend. I haven't converted his arm yet to be in the elbow bent position. The left arm is his omniscope with attached "hurricane" bolter.

Also the guy in the back in another DV mini

Posing is much nicer, they look more like they are mid-battle and supporting each other. Greenstuff sleeve looks good, much better than without. I like what you're doing so far :)
  • 1 month later...

So I've made some decent progress on my second vow, 3 chaplains. Here are some shots.

The scrolls are done, just need text. I'm thinking about not doing black but more of a grey to make it look faded. Thoughts? I tried to make the scrolls look like really old parchment. Also the skull helms are almost done, just need a final highlight. The biker's chest also needs highlights

So whilst I've been working on my chaplains(which are coming along nicely) I've also been working on replicating the awesome left shoulder pads from our Sword Brethren. It's not easy because you have to mold it directly from the mini(and I have the metal ones so no chopping apart)

So after several tries I think I got a good cast.

Here's the piece that you attach to a plain shoulder pad to make the look.

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k48/Acebaur/40K/20150531_140734_zps1rvnlcsk.jpg

And here is a bunch of shots of how it could look on the model that will become my Honor Guard Champion(complete with combat shield). I tried to get as many angles as possible as sometimes pictures can scew the perspective.  C&C is welcome!

Thanks guys, glad you like it. Here are some more pics to drool over.

I glued it onto a blank pad and that worked pretty well. Then I mocked up what he could look like. Obviously, I'll be putting a knightly helmet on but this was just the test head to see about making it fit.

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k48/Acebaur/40K/20150602_101118_zpsa4qun0w4.jpg

I'm also talking to a buddy of mine who does 3d printing. He thinks we can work the the mini and possibly make them using that method which would be awesome as making them one at a time is a pain, especially since it took me 4 tries to get it right the first time

I would place it lower on the pad, they're like that on the GW bretherens because the cape is caught under it.

If you do manage to get a decent 3D template I wouldn't mind pitching some money (not much mind, but something anyway) to get a copy of the file.

Nice work with that pad! I take it that the Sword Brethren's shoulder pads are smaller than plastic ones? I don't own any so I can't tell for sure. Im only comparing to pics online. I say this because that bit you have seems to be smaller in proportion to the figure compared to how GW's models are. The bit doesn't protrude as far towards the chest, if you know what I mean. Maybe you can file the plastic shoulder pad down some to make the GS pad fit better?

Either way, the mini looks great. I like the drawn sword holding the scabbard look. I think it looked better with the terminator bit on his forearm though.

Marshal Barbarossa

Thanks! Glad you like it!

Here he is with a proper helmet and the combat shield(I forgot to put it on him last time). He's still almost entirely blue tac'd together except for the arms and the sword hand which are magnetized.

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k48/Acebaur/40K/20150603_090532_zpsxxxd8vrs.jpg

And here is a pic for size comparison. The pad isn't smaller, but probably because I didn't shave enough GS out of the pad before putting it on it doesn't go past the shoulder pad as much. Still I think it worked ok. I made another one yesterday, but I'm going to hold off on more until I see whether we can 3d print them instead.

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k48/Acebaur/40K/20150603_090710_zpsqretu5ru.jpg

I'd consider a different head.  That one is particularly...sharp, for lack of a better word, while the body is very blocky and heavyset.

Eh, I like it. Plus it fits in there which most normal PA helms don't. It also reminds me of the BT skin from the Space Marine game and I liked that one.

I just realized that I never posted my most recent addition from the ETL

I vowed him as a Chapter Master, but more than likely he will only ever see duty as a Sword Brethren(hence the SB colors). Mostly because the sculpt is so terrible and I can never think of a time I'd field an HQ with a bolter of any type

But I think he came out pretty good all things considered.

An ETL update on my Chaplains

This guy is nearing completion, getting down to the details now with gold mostly finished and working on the silver.

This guy is a few steps behind, just starting both his gold and silver trim. I'm not sure I like the silver all the way around his pad, what do you think?

And bonus pics!. I did this a while ago but never uploaded it. I really couldn't get past my Command squad champ not having an actual spear like the rest, but I loved that pose so I came up with this as a custom power lance to make him stand out.

http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k48/Acebaur/40K/db05de57-c66b-42dc-9be6-598655f44c1e_zpsu0bs8pcx.jpg

and on the champ himself

That spear...

I recognise the templar power sword arm, a regular Tac power sword, but what's the top half of the aft of the spear made of, part of a thunder hammer ? Some bits remind me of teh power axe as well i'm not sure.

Either way I wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of it.
