CoffeeGrunt
The Macharius took First Blood today, as while I was tweaking the build and adding a few touches of my own to it, I slipped with my knife and executed a clean, bloodless slice straight through my left thumbtip. This was perturbing but thankfully a couple of people leapt to my aid, and basically taped a wad of cotton wool to it. I found the severed fingertip later amongst the resin shavings, and laughed for a while until I binned it and got on with the Macharius: http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-105.jpg With everything returned to its hunky-dory state aside from not being able to hold stuff with my left thumb, I managed to finish adding my personal touches - other than blood - to the Macharius, and cracked on with the paintjob. Still only base coats for now. This baby will be named Bastion Indomitus, and will be a battle-scarred relic of the Regiment that has seen more damage than the Guardsmen it supports have had ration packs. Gunna try a fair few battle-scarring and weathering techniques on it, and I added a little physical damage all over the hull to give it a war face. It was also cathartic to mutilate it back a little. The Drive Me Closer Commander felt almost mandatory for a centrepiece Superheavy as well. And of course, all Aquilas were forcibly expunged. http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-109.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-107.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-108.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-106.jpg The missile array at the rear is a Hunter-Killer Missile, but I got carried away with an auto-loading mechanism, so I may ask my friends if I can run it as a Missile Launcher with only Krak Missiles and a points increase. If not, I like the idea of have a plain HWT Missile Launcher mounted to the hull as an improvised one-shot weapon. It also has both a Heavy Stubber and Storm Bolter because this is a rolling platform of death and I want it bristling with guns. WarriorFish
My fingers have lots of little marks on from many years of friendly knife fire, I imagine modellers are readily identifiable from their finger prints for this reason :P A good omen for the table top though, how can a unit that is of your blood in possibly fail you? Keep up the progress Coffee :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292185-4th-tarosian-regiment-devildog/page/10/#findComment-3820608 Share on other sites

hendrik
i think the tank commander his swordarm could use some more work though. have you tried mimicking his pose? you'll feel why. try to cut up the arm a bit and pose it in a more natural pose. since he's already pointing towards the enemy i'dd either hold the chainsword in a "at ease" position, maybe resting it against the shoulders, or have him hold in in a deflective way Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292185-4th-tarosian-regiment-devildog/page/10/#findComment-3820936 Share on other sites
CoffeeGrunt
I did think that after assembling him. I'll probably rejig him a little before I finalise it and start painting him. I wanted it to look like he's pushing some lowly grunts onwards to attack a key position, so I'll repose him to better suit that. Â Anyway, I managed to find time to complete the base colours and camo pattern on the Macharius. Now to do some washing and highlighting, then the weathering and battle damage to follow! http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20140929_23_11_14_Pro.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20140929_23_12_37_Pro.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20140929_23_12_18_Pro.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292185-4th-tarosian-regiment-devildog/page/10/#findComment-3821850 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
Working hard I see Coffee, just be careful you don't burn out :P I look forward to hearing how it performs on the table - a fully painted army with a unit that you have anointed with your own blood as a focal point is bound for greatness :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292185-4th-tarosian-regiment-devildog/page/10/#findComment-3822027 Share on other sites
CoffeeGrunt
Just wanna swing some rules ideas past you:  Given that I've bought a Stubber and a Storm Bolter on this, and it's about 10pts over-priced between the two, how would you feel about the below as a 10pt upgrade instead of the Hunter-Killer Missile? (So 20pts by the current Codex's standards.)  Automated Missile Launcher  Heavy 1, Strength 8, AP 3, Range 48" Special Rules: Automated  Automated: This weapon counts as a hull-mounted weapon, using its position to determine line of sight, etc. It may be fired in addition to the other weapons on the vehicle, and does not count towards the total number of weapons that may fire. Additionally, it ignores the effects of Crew Shaken/Crew Stunned results when rolling to Hit, but must always prioritise the nearest Monstrous Creature or Vehicle within its Line of Sight. If the weapon rolls a 1 to Hit when firing, the loading mechanism has jammed, and the weapon is treated as Destroyed, though no Hull Point damage is inflicted. The weapon is always fired with a BS of 3, and cannot benefit from any abilities that provide re-rolls to Hit or bonuses to its BS.  I thought it would be more flavourful than anything, really. The Destroy rather than simple can't-use is to allow Techpriests or similar to repair it if the player wishes. It also suits the feel I want of Imperial tech with the first, tentative stages of Drone intelligence being merged into their systems. It has a higher than average Ballistic Skill but IMO the Destroy on a 1 offsets this a bit, and means it has more of a chance to do something before it jams up. CoffeeGrunt
Washed and battle damaged. Just the Tank Commander to be finished, and a whole lot of rivets and highlights for the final details. This is going to be a great centrepiece model for my army! :) Â http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20141004_22_42_29_Pro.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20141004_22_42_48_Pro.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20141004_22_43_14_Pro.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20141004_22_43_31_Pro.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292185-4th-tarosian-regiment-devildog/page/10/#findComment-3825467 Share on other sites

CoffeeGrunt
Next is going to be my Tau-ified Veteran squad, who I've already base coated. They just need washing and highlighting then a little base work. Â Hoping to have the Macharius more or less finished after today. It's getting a test run against some Tau running the Y'vahra Battlesuit to see what it's like. CoffeeGrunt
It was close, but ultimately I lost. It's difficult to bubble wrap such a massive tank, and the Y'varha is a fast one! Taking 6 shots of Krak plus Haywire on top of that left it feeling a bit delicate. I also messed up and left a flank open for Stealth Teams to move in. Ah well, live and learn!  My addiction to tanks is now famous, and though I'm trying to take it one day at a time, people keep pulling out old models they've got and offering them for irresistible prices. I got the below for £40 from a couple of people. Looking forward to trying the Vindicare after I get the Supplement, because those guys are awesome and thank God it's the original sculpt and not the dual-wield one. http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20141007_23_57_15_Pro.jpg  Next week I'm hoping to get a game with the whole Regiment, which should be a good bit of fun! Other than that, I finally finished the Macharius. Going to tidy up the Commander a bit as I overdid the colours on his face and accidentally made him look like a clown: http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20141008_07_49_34_Pro.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20141008_07_49_18_Pro.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20141008_07_49_49_Pro.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20141007_23_52_51_Pro.jpg  I may still cut and repose the sword arm to be lowered and at-ease. WarriorFish
So the Joker rides a tank now? :P Â Welcome to the Order of Tank Treadheads (OTT) Coffee! Kierdale
Why so serious? Â ;) Why not rotate the sword-holding wrist so the blade is more vertical? I think that would look better. elmo
I like the idea of the chainsword "at rest" with the back of the blade on the commanders shoulder. walter h
The back of the blade will rest on his shoulder. This sounds like it would work well. Great work on the ,Macharious looks excellent. This is the best image I could find or this one: http://www.careyroots.com/figure4.gif I may have to try it myself too Edit: This is what you end up with when you take the Sgt chainsword and attach it to one of the rifleman arms with a little trimming :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292185-4th-tarosian-regiment-devildog/page/10/#findComment-3828541 Share on other sites

CoffeeGrunt
Thanks guys, this Macharius was a fun project to do! I'll probably sort out the Commander at a later date, for now he'll do for the tabletop. Â I spent tonight retouching the Chimera I did as my first mech model for this army back in the OP. Nice to see how much better I am at painting now when I compared the Macharius now to painting that a few months ago, Still, I wanted to 'update' it a bit to look slightly better, so I went over it and added a bunch more detail: http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-112.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-113.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-111.jpg http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/temporary-110.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292185-4th-tarosian-regiment-devildog/page/10/#findComment-3831931 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
What a difference a few weeks can make! There's nothing like reviewing older models to see how much you've improved, it's a vital part of anyone's progress :) Your Guard army is going from strength to strength - I just wish I could say a few weeks is all I need to see my improvements! I found a Russ I painted probably about 20 years ago and it is pretty bad Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292185-4th-tarosian-regiment-devildog/page/10/#findComment-3832177 Share on other sites
CoffeeGrunt
I suppose the ridiculous pace of painting I'm keeping up with helps, I have a soft target of 1 model or unit a week. This week's my week off work, and I had a 3K game with a friend for his birthday, (missed the chance to get pics of most of the Army all lined up, will have to try it some day!) I won in the end after holding about 1K of units in Reserve because they wouldn't fit on the 6*4 table we were using, and swept his assaulting forces away in a potent counter-attack by air and ground!  Got myself an extra Chimera today as well, because there's no addiction like tank addiction. Tried some conversion work on the turret and gun ports, and I'm fairly pleased with how it came out. I wanted it to look like Guardsmen actually pointing Lasguns out, rather than the weird spherical lasguns the kit has now: http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s36/coffeegrunt/WP_20141014_19_29_26_Pro.jpg  My friend left to have dinner with his missus after the game, then returned to buy a Leman Russ, Chimera, Command Squad and 20 Guardsmen to start his new Guard army up. He'd been getting bored of both his Chaos and Wolves armies, and fancied something a little different. I gave him the formal Guard welcome, and congratulated him on his decision to volunteer for the meat grinder! WarriorFish
Excellent work Coffee, you're a true Guardsman buy hoarding tanks and inducting more into the ranks! You should try and get an army shot soon, not just for us but so that one day you can look back and wonder how you ever felt satisfied with so few models  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292185-4th-tarosian-regiment-devildog/page/10/#findComment-3834091 Share on other sites
