The thing with lightning claws, is that you are strictly limiting yourself to infantry targets, and squishy ones at that.

Nothing inherently wrong with that per say, it's just fists let you go for the same targets just as effectively.

And terminators.

And tanks.

And shoot infantry too.

With combi weapons if you see fit.

It's the utility power fists bring that make them hard to pass up.

With claws you risk being tanked by a unit that can take the damage (like other termknators)

The only way around that is to bung them in a transport, and guide them to their intended target, but since that's normally 3+ squishy dudes, it's an over investment in points.

Best use I can think of, is in an anvillus, in a squad of five, dropped into the enemies infantry... But even then fists will do the job better.

That said, I love lightning claws, and do want to use them myself. They look too cool not to. Rule of cool wins!

Edit:

Almost forgot... Russ looks killer!

Absolutely loving the work done so far.

Especially the skintone. Very nice!

Ok so not a pretty update haha just knocking out building all the troops I have so I can batch paint.

I have 5 breaches and about 20 troops ready for priming.

Each of my breachers will have the little Viking aces strapped to their backs. All the breachers arms and shields and left pads are pinned so I can paint them all separately

Here my my breachers sergeant

And here is everyone waiting to be primed

10 termies are also in there

Yep they do are from time to time.

Yeah those axes are sweet!!

Axes were ace in the shield wall,, especially wielded by the front rank as they could be used to hook and puul people and shields from opposing shield walls.

This would open up gaps which the other spear armed ranks could them stab and maim those exposed, while the person pulled forward is hacked to bits by the axe.

Short swords weer also good weapons as you could go in and stab below the shield line, at opponent legs, this would make them fall, again causing confusion, making openings and breaking opponents shield walls. Plus short swords would be much easier to wield in the tight confines of the shield wall.

At least that is my thinking ;)

I have done my front rank of breachers wielding swords and I am going to put the B@C combat blades on their backs as the "short sword.

My next unit will be front rank of axes and second rank of speas and bolters :D

I need to see if those pads are cheap to get in the UK

I think the plastic mark 3 chest plates are very plain otherwise the plastics are damn nice pieces compared to resin.

Far more consistent in quality and a lot less clean-up.

I have to echo that - the MkIII kit is simply stunning, with the exception that the torsos are all the same and have no detail. If you take a look at the MkIII resin there's three different torso designs in a 5 man pack, and the ones with the lightning bolts are pretty good. Given the variety in legs / backpacks / helms in the plastic kit a few different torso designs would have made them perfect, instead they're all identical and minimalist. A lost opportunity.

I'm really loving those spiked shoulder pads you've got there, I just wish FW would start incorporating them into their sets (seeing as they're already in the artwork).

Can you notice any differences in pose or detail between resin and plastic armor

I actually love the plain torsos.

And the poses are close to the same.

The edges of

Armor and rivets aren't as sharp but they are much much more consistent. With the resin some of the mkiii armor edges get nicked off of are different thicknesses which you don't get with plastic.

Also the helmets. Holy hell I love these helmets

The helmets are light years ahead of FW's

And yeah the trim on resin :s

Lost count the amount of time I tried to remove a mold line and shaved of a rivet, or snapped a bit of trim off.

However I believe it is Forgeworlds attempt to teach us all how to do battle damage & weathering :D

I think the plain torsos will work brilliantly for the Alpha Legion ans it will help with the anonymity for each unadorned marine.

For me they will be put to best use on Tactical marines, where the bolter would cover an otherwise nicely sculpted SW torso. Either that or corpse decoration ;)

  • 3 weeks later...

Not a glorious update I've been doin a lot of busy work. Base colors brass trim all the small things that need to be done. Still have a lot to do, highlights oils weathering pigments but slowly getting there, enjoy!

Thanks fellas.

I am very unsure about the bases. I am defintiely getting rid of the red, i don;t know about the gold. They need touch ups. What do you guys think. I think for the bulk of my squads it primarily be that off white grey color

Also, what size bases are the custodes and sisters on

Maybe a wash of sepia to warm it up.

I tend to find that cold coloured marines pop much better on a warmer base.

Grey base with grey marine, means grey marine gets lost in the grey

Yea i was thinking that too, i just really want to stick to prospero and the white/lightgrey marble/flagstone.  Maybe a burnt umber wash rather than black?

Custodes are 40mm I think, SoS might be 32's, I do not recall getting any 25's in my box.

Maybe burnt umber would work.

What about using xv88 and Averland to do a faux gold deep yellow on the grey marble instead of gold? Might help break up the metallics a bit, also switch red to white or blue on he bases?,

I plan on doing mine close to his base colours

Thats a pretty good idea actually.

I think i will keep the gold bases for the Sisters and The wolves be primarily be on the of white grey. Keep it simple like the diorama.

I will be adding scorched books and broken glass as well
