^I thought warmachine detachment was 8 or less?

I'm confused now :huh.:

TO MY BOOK!

Yup, its 8. I remember it being 6 for some reason.

Perhaps because up until recently there were no eligible SH with 7 or 8 hull points, the Atrapos being the first? :happy.:

I think the Atrapos is off-limits to the Legions, Solar Auxilia and Imperialis Militia. This is due to the specific availability listed in it's profile:

“The Mechanicum Knight-Atrapos may be used either as part of a Mechanicum Taghmata army as a Lords of War choice as normal, or as part of a Questoris Knight Crusade army as a 0-1 choice per 2,000 points in the army."

That's straight from the Crusade Imperialis. It's meant to be uber, and not readily available to the masses. By my reckoning, unless you are playing a 2000 point Questoris Knights Army or a 1740+ point Mechanicum Army, you're out of luck...

That entry isnt from the legion book though, so it would make sense that the legion isn't listed.  I'm still waiting on my copy of the updated legion book but my understanding was that any knight can be taken as a LoW.  Thats how battlescribe has it anyway.

Yeah there is that, it's a previous ruling from before the new book... BUT... I'd say it still stands.

The new book says you can:

"War Machine Detachment: 1-2 Super-heavy vehicles of the same unit type, each with a Hull Points value of 8 or less, and each chosen either from the specific army list for the Primary Detachment, the Questoris Knights army list found in the Crusade Imperialis army list, or the optional Super-heavy list found on page 10..."

Now when you go to select the Knight from the CIAL, the Entry for the Atropos says it cannot be taken in this way - so that is what I would say goes personally.

You could however bring one as allied, you just need a buddy.

As Charlo has quoted, the piece in the Legiones Astartes book doesn't specify what Knights can and can't be taken. But by that reckoning, the Atrapos is more readily available to other armies than the Mechanicum and Questoris Knights! :/ If any army can take 1-2 as a Lords of War choice, why put any restrictions in place?

By specifically mentioning the availability in the unit entry, they have future-proofed it. It's also covered from a "permissions and restrictions" standpoint. The fluff piece on the side of the rules sums it up really:

“One of the rarest and most potent Knights, created solely under the direct auspices of the Lords Magos of the Mechanicum, the Atrapos is a unique variant of the Cerastus. The Atrapos was created, it is said, during the early Great Crusade to carry particularly rare and powerful weaponry and with a single goal in mind – the destruction of heretek engines and xenos war machines whose very nature and existence was considered a blasphemy to the Omnissiah.

Its use is normally confined to the direct authority of the Synod of Magos of a given Forge World, their power used both in dire warfare against the enemies of the Omnissiah and also held as an ultimate sanction against any wayward magos or forge-fane that would succumb to heresy against the edicts of the Machine Cult. It is rare, but not unknown for a Knight-Atrapos to be gifted into the charge of a Knight House outside the direct influence of a Forge World, marking payment of some great service or blood-debt between the two."

Hmm, do the entries for the other knights in CIAL mention the legions or do they have the same/similar verbiage as the Atropos?

No idea, I don't have that book... Finding it through other means has proven difficult too :tongue.:

It's out there, along with the Legion Army List, which I am now kind of mad I paid money for since a bunch of the rules are outdated in it, lol. Serves me right for breaking my personal rule of only buying the black books (okay and Mechanicum, which doesn't count because I buy all the things Mechanicum).

Ah, alright. If the new red book says to see the Questoris list, then the Questoris list in CIAL says that it can only be taken in a Mechanicum list or 1 per 2000pts of Questoris, that sums it up.

Aye - going by it's fluff and the way the rules have all been written... AND the fact we finally have a fully up to date ecosystem of army list books for the Heresy it seems the most logical way to go!

Just checked Questoris list in the their new red book, and the Atropos has the same unique limitation, and out of all of the variants, it is the only one who reads MECHANICUM Cerastus Knight (rather than just Questoris or Cerastus like all the rest). Seems pretty definitive.  Regarding an allied detachment, are we going to have a re-boot of the old Praetor discussion that you can't take him below 1000 points since he's 1 per 1000 points, so you can't take an allied detachment of knights with an Atropos unless the detachment is 2000 points? :P

They clarified this in the Master of the Legion rule, its just in regard to the army as a whole.

So for arguments sake a 2K army could be :

Primary AoD Detachment:

  • Preator with MotL.
  • Another Character with MotL (Khârn).

-rest of LA army-

Allied Knight Detachment:

  • Atropos
  • Another Knight

So i think this would be a fun 3k list that uses our Knight friends and new assualt marines...

Primary Detachment

Jump Pack Delagatus - Berserker Assault, Weapons to taste

Surlak

2x 16 Assault Marines - Weapons to taste

1x 19 Inductii - Artificer/Power Fist of course

2x Jump Pack Apothecaries

2x MM/CML/HK Javelins

Spartan - AC/FS

Drop Pod Leviathan w/ Murder Drill, Snippy Claw, Phosphex, AC

Allied Detachment

HQ Atropos

Troop Castigator

I like the idea of an Atropos, but I think folks are fixated on it b/c it has 7hp, a light saber and a portal gun.

I have yet to find a better Knight than a Lancer for that boosted HQ slot. Its the only Knight that can kill other Knights virtually risk free on the charge. Everything else is going either simultaneously with you at 4 (and thus get the opportunity to knock a chunk out of your knight) or sadly after b/c the Magera and Styrix are slow, derpy robit knights. Also, its the only knight that gets an invulnerable in melee.

That 3+ ionic flare shield is damn good, but not "worth giving up a 4+ invuln in melee" good.

With that list i am hoping that my double punchy leviathan would be knee capping enemy knights, lol

edit:  my thought with the atropos in the HQ slot was that the +1BS would make his large blast death pie less likey to kill friendly models that are running around close to the enemy.
