Last night I played my most gruelling game of 40k yet.

 

Unsurprisingly, it was my first game against the new Eldar and as much as I've heard people going on about how unbalanced they are, I had no idea to what extent.

The orange dudes (Fire scorpions? Fire Raptors... I'm sure they are called fire somethings.) that can move 6" in the movement phase, then move another "6 in the shooting phase, then they ALL get to shoot a melta gun each, adding +1 the vehicle damage table (yes, thats right, +2 for being ap1 and then +1 because of Eldar trickery) and THEN get to move back another 2 d6!?!

 

They have jetbikes that are troops, that can jink, that have the same toughness and save as a marine and have Str 5, rending guns!

They were re-rolling hits and wounds pretty much across the board, they were overwatching on BS5, the HQ's had 4+ invun saves, they had a mega amount of warpcharge dice and the list goes on and on and on.

 

Warp Spiders can teleport out the way where you shoot at them? What the hell GW? How can you have a unit that cant be shot at?!

 

Post Eldar trauma aside, it was a cracker of a game; I've never had to work so hard to make each and every victory point count.

You're thinking of Fire Dragons. They run, they shoot (Battle focus lets most Eldar do that), their formation lets all run moves be 6" automatically. No idea where they'd be getting an assault move from. You might be mixing them up with Warp Spiders, who are Jet Pack Infantry, and thus get the 2d6 Assault move.

As pointed about by CaptainHelion, almost all Eldar units have the rule Battle Focus, whereby an Eldar player can Run and then shoot, or vica versa. If the Eldar player is using the Craftworld Warhost Detachment, then this Run becomes 6" rather than D6". Interestingly, if the player shoots and then moves onto another unit, the player loses the chance to Run with that original unit (i.e. you do it all or miss the bus). Fire Dragons are the melta Aspect and are supposed to be like this against vehicles. The only units that can move 2D6 in the Assault Phase are Warp Spiders and Eldar Jetbikes.

If upgraded to take Shuriken Cannons (STR 6), they become 27 points per model and thus, each time you kill one (or even force them to Jink) their output is significantly neutered. All Shuriken weaponry has the rule Bladestorm whereby any To Wound roles of a 6 become AP 2 rather than AP 5. It's a pseudo-rending ability. This isn't new. Re-rolling To Hits with the Jetbikes implies that these were actually STR 4 Shuriken Catapults, which have a 12" range and are Twin-linked. Alternatively, we have some Psychic abilities in play (Guide is re-roll To Hit, Doom is re-roll To Wound). Guide only works on a unit by unit basis, as does Doom and the Farseer is casting these off the Eldar table. To Overwatch at full BS, that's a Psychic Power on the Divination table I believe and yes, they have a 4++ through their Runic Armour.

 

As for BS5, that's the Formation bonus for the Aspect Host - with this you elect a Formation wide increase of either WS or BS by 1 which is designated at the start of the game.

 

Warp Spiders can teleport out the way where you shoot at them? What the hell GW? How can you have a unit that cant be shot at?!

 

As an aside, if they use Flickerjump, they can't use their Warp Jump Generators in the Movement Phase. Additionally, every time they jump, on a 2D6 role of "snake eyes", one randomly determined model is lost to the warp. What I'm not sure about is if Flickerjump can be spammed in a single phase - in short, charge them :wink:

The best part is, next time you'll know how to handle them and there will be less surprises :)

If there is anything wrong there (like the Fire Dragons moving in assault) then it's me remembering things wrong, not my opponent. He's really on the ball and above all suspicion of cheating.

 

Your right, the next time I play them there will be alot of things I do differently, but I cant say I'm eager to play against them again any time soon. They have a lot of nasty dakka. >_<

Bone and flesh done, starting the white tonight... then it's the red, tidying up with silver and assembly!

Finally got off my butt and got a box of the new BA Terminators.  Not thrilled about the integral half-torsos but as long as I can swap them out with normal termies I'll survive.  Fortunately I procrastinated on my army long enough to see this host of bloody plastic goodness come along.  Now the task at hand is to finish kitbashing the new stuff into my old stuff and (someday) a fully mustered 1st and 2nd Company will come marching out of the dust and smoke.

 

EDIT:  I also grabbed one of the new "upgrade" sprues, some very nice things on there!  The new Mephiston inspired chest plate is tempting me to convert my own Lord of Death!

Scored two more wins (Necrons and Necrons) on the second day of the tourney for a total of 4-1 and a second place over all. (Darn that Eldar game)
