Tallscale 30k Alpha Legion

Greetings Brothers and Sisters!

 

So, yesterday at work when reading Veteran Sergeant's WIP thread something in my head went *boop* and the moment I came back home, I had to start working on this... Here it is, truescale (or tallscale?) marine.

 

I opted for Mk VI armour parts (chestplate is a modified Mk V). I always wanted to do something 30k other than a few Death Guards over a year ago.

 

It's a test model. There's a lot of mistakes, imperfections, and things I could've done better instead of rushing it. But I was eager to see the end result.

I'm posting this as a WIP because this isn't going to end with one model.

 

Things I learned:

• cut the legs, attach ONE part to plasticard, then cut & file the plasticard to size, and THEN attach the other leg part; doing it in any other order is just asking for trouble;
• spend a lot of time fixing any imperfections, use liquid or regular green stuff if necessary;
• while keeping in mind that in order to achieve a lively blue hue at least 4 layers are needed, make sure you apply the blue glaze very carefully because it WILL build up and obscure details on parts that are not armour (see backpack);

The picture doesn't really give him justice because my camera sucks. Oh well. In any case, the technique I used for the armour is as follows:

1. Paint everything with Vallejo Natural Steel/Leadbelcher
2. Wash with Nuln Oil
3. Highlight with Runefang Steel
4. Mix Natural Steel with Snot Green (roughly 50/50, just make sure you give that green a metallic texture) and use a combination of drybrush/stipple to apply it to lower parts of each armour section
5. Apply at least 4 layers of Guilliman Blue to achieve this nice blue tint.
6. Once all other parts are painted, apply matt varnish (I use Tamiya Flat Clear spray).

Really good job. The tallscaling is well done, they look taller but not overly bulky. If I ever try this method, I'll make sure to consult this thread.

It took 7 months (lol), but now a third mini is ready for painting. If I keep this up, I should have a complete squad by 2018. :D
