Totes (hi Flint!) agree with Caheron there. The ETLs combo of competition with cameraderie does it for me as well. I painted about half of my current Chaos army during the last two ETLs, while being totally psyched about the hobby at the same time. :tu:

I couldn't agree more with the comments about camaraderie and productivity the ETL produces. It has been a blast and I love the way members motivate each other and egg each other on with support. Like many others here it has meant my collection of painted models has risen through the roof.

I paint around half an army each year because of this. Not a lot by some standards, but it makes me happy, and I actually finish things this way. If only I had the ability to paint vehicles faster, I should probably get a bigger brush.....

My suspicion is that Bloodletters would be the best in terms of time spent:points earned. They're so bloody quick, and it's something like 160 points for a squad with all the trimmings. Y'know, if you were going to go for pure efficiency. Me, I just paint whatever needs doing for whatever army I'm working on, which means next year will either be more Daemonkin, or Black Legion Chosen using the DV models.

 

Possibly both. I'll have to paint some Chosen up before the event and see how long all the detail takes me. The Call will be another Rhino and Cultist year I reckon, just not in such vast quantities as last time.

Haven't done the Call of Chaos Yet! How many units do I need to put aside for it?

Well, the Call doesn't have the competitive side of things, it's more a 'get stuff painted you slackers!' type thing, so whatever you fancy really. The first year I was in I did two Heldrakes and some Havocs, then last year I did 60 Cultists and 3 Rhinos. I don't recommend the 60 Cultist approach, I got burnt out early on and had to blitz like, 50 of them in the last week.

 

I also use the Call to test just how much I can comfortably paint in three months, so that I don't overestimate my ETL vows and screw it all up.

A combination of jet lag, insomnia, and a desire to once again look through the pages of this year's ETL, has lead me to do math. I agree with Teets and Dragonlover, the ETL gets stuff done. After the ETL, you can paint what you really want as a reward. The Call of Chaos serving as a sort of mid-term kickstarter.

I'm thinking of doing another Augustus' Arena event with an improved format before the Call. What do you guys think about that?

Yup, I painted three squads of Bloodletters in an evening each, although for the life of me I wouldn't know how to pump them up to 160 points without stretching the spirit of the ETL. I cam up to 135 points, for ten guys with a full command an a cool banner. Still, decent Lords or Special Characters also bring in a lot of points, as do Lords of War.
