This stuff is great!

So I wanted to bring attention to the legs of the skullcrushers. Right now, I still think that they look too much like loyalist legs. I feel that adding an arrow coming up from the trip would do a lot to mitigate that, or just adding some more embellishments, but to me they still seem too plain, and thus out of place with the rest of the model.

I'm testing out some green stuff patterns of trim, because I agree with you. Lots of work for the 20+ riders, though. If I can finish 1 or 2 a day I'd be happy. Hopefully when I figure it out I'll get them done faster.

Well, haven't been working on the Skullcrushers at all since last updated. Just too much work and my inability to focus is omnipresent. I have come a long way toward finishing my squad of Shadowborne, though.

Here's one fully painted/weathered:

I may add some Blood for the Blood God to Sarkon's (the champ) chainswords.

I like them, over all. I wanted the unit to look absolutely filthy and in the midst of fighting on this dusty planet.
Pretty much have all the parts I need for my Skullcrushers, so I've started to sculpt little bits of trim on my test model:

Thanks, slaughter-brother. I just need to find the time to finish about 24 of 'em. :biggrin.: It will be a glorious day, when they're all finished.

*edit*

I'm also trying to figure out how to make the WFB Skullcrushers shoulder pads work. For any arms where the shoulder is bent at an oblique angle (as in the one pictured) regular pauldrons don't really look right. The Skullcrushers' pauldrons are better, but they don't really conform to the contours of the shoulder and I'd need to build some plasticard component or something.

Haven't been able to find a good tutorial for scratch-building pads, but I'm sure if I look hard enough I'll find one.

And now updated with raptor feet:

And a regular CSM shoulderpad. Might have to end up going with these for the sake of practicality:

And now some concept work on a unit champion armed with an Axe of Khorne:

Need to sculpt the teeth on the skull on his right leg still, in case you're wondering what's going on there.

The topknot head is growing on me. I think it looks better and is balanced by the presence of pauldrons and a backpack:

And here are the two I've built so far together:

Now just imagine 23 more of them... and the loss of my sanity. Hmm. Can't really "lose" what I don't have, in fairness.

While I am normally not a huge fan of topknots on bareheaded models, you should definitely keep the head! It provides a very nice sense of motion to the model (and also seems to be a pretty cool sculpt). A very worthy champion indeed!

Awesome, glad you like it! You're right about the sense of motion, I didn't even notice. I was going to add other bits to do that but maybe I won't need to. Don't wanna overdo it.

That unit champion looks awesome. Got any plans for repositioning of the Juggers themselves on future models?

Dragonlover

Thanks, dragonlover. I'm increasingly happy with how he turned out. I think his is the only unique head among the champs, 6 total. Maybe he'll get a cool name.

As for the juggies, they're all assembled in the stock positions. I may cut/reposition a few ankle joints to have a couple of them rearing up, but for the most part I think they're super awesome as-is.

Here's number three:

Finished sculpting the skull trim on the champ. It isn't perfect but after like 4 attempts with sculpting then furiously scraping my work away this is as good as it'll get:

And here's a group shot:

You know, now that they're coming together I'm really happy with them. I've been putting this project off for far too long. Really isn't as difficult as I thought it would be. Painting... now that's another story!

The trim on your champions greaves is exceptional. I look forward to seeing it painted :smile.:

Nemac

Thank you very much, Nemac. It took a lot of hard work to get it looking that good. I was super tempted to keep fiddling with it, but my fiancee told me to stop before I messed it up and had to start over yet again. Sometimes it's best to listen to a woman's advice. :tongue.:

In other news:

I've recently decided to get into 30k with a buddy of mine, as we're getting sorta bored/frustrated with 40k right now.

After mulling it over for a while, I made up my mind. I'm gonna play traitor Solar Auxilia.

My first purchase is a doozy:

Should be here in a week. :laugh.:

I still plan to work on my Khorne Daemonkin. Gonna put my CSM/Daemons on hold indefinitely, because they just don't seem worth my time at the moment.
  • 1 month later...

So it's been a little rough lately. With my dad and dog's passing, I've sorta been in a slump for the past month. Haven't really felt like doing anything, let alone hobby stuff.

However, my dad's memorial was last weekend, and since then I've sorta been getting back into the swing of things.

Back in the saddle, you could say :P.

I've finished sculpting the third Skullcrusher's trim, and begun painting them.

Using this paint scheme from GW as inspiration (for the juggernauts only):

Here they are:

Notice the backpack from the Dark Vengeance champion: combi-melta. For a change I'm gonna try WYSIWYG with this army.

And the basecoat done on the juggies.

Super stoked to work on these guys!
