So I'm really enjoying this paint scheme, the more I do it, the more it feels like a vacation from the Lightning Bearers, but don't worry I should be getting back to them in a big update in a few weeks or so, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

That said, I have managed to plow through 5 Tactical Legionaries for Loyalty and Treachery:

Legionary Tokah

Great work, I assume the metallic red is the Tamiya red colour over runefang?

The Metallic red is actualy Forgeworld Angron Clear red over Ironhands Steel, with a runefang zenithal Highlight. i tried using Tamiya clear red, but is shade is deeper and darker than FW, comparatively, FW clear red comes off with a slight orange tint which I really liked for my Sons. I could do a comparison pis of the difference if that would interest people here. Yes?

Those shoulders (and the rest of the models ofc) look absolutely awesome!

Thanks friend, I hope the Step by step guide I PM'd you work out well. You'll have to share your progress with me once you try it out!

Nice looking thousand sons. have you tried using rub n buff for the first layer of silver?

I haven't had a chance to try rub n buff but I'm pretty satisfied with the metallic undercoat I'm using. What would the difference be between rub n buff and airbrushing Ironhands steel and Runefang?

Love the colours and the minis - I want to buy a set now and use the left overs from BaC!

Do it. Just as planned...

Simply brilliant, dude! The metallic red is perfect and your selection of bit is excellent! The conversion work on the shoulder pads is subtle and very well done (I don't know why FW haven't released shoulder pads with this design). These are easily my favourite HH Thousand Sons. No question.

The only issue I can see is the scale mail on Yensek. It doesn't line up with either the belt or the torso. Was this intentional?

I'm really looking forward to following this project, I've got a feeling it's going to be incredibly inspiring

Thanks Kizz, that means a lot coming from you, I still want to do that joint log tho haha.

I understand the issue you have with the mail on Yensek, I tried a bunch of different positions but at the end of the day, this was the only one which fit. I was actually pretty pleased with it as it formed a straight line down to the base which I though made sense. I figured heavy scale mail would be weighed down enough to drop in a line towards the ground.

These are awesome! Better than FW

Thanks, big praise, as FW was the standard i was shooting for.  :biggrin.:

I don't know how you've done it, but what was once a Legion that was of no interest to me is suddenly whispering in my ear.

Great use of the Ultras upgrades. I feel that those, along with the FW Blood Angels stuff, can be used to enliven many of the other Legions when used sparingly.

Thanks man. Your projects have always been a big inspiration so your compliment carries a lot of weight. I'm proud you think my painting brings interest to a faction for you. Also agreed on the upgrades, they are just generic enough to spruce up any legion.

Loving the look

I've never seen the new Looney Toons. This is terrifying, and amazing. i can't stop watching it haha.

wow nice sons man

Thanks friend, really glad you like them so far.

So can you give a step by step for your metallic scheme for me? After all us sons should stick together

Here you go:

  • Black undercoat,
  • follow by a thinned airbrush coat of Ironhand Steel (leadbelcher would work too, but it's slightly darker so I opted for the FW Iron hands Steel. leaving the lower half of armor plates darker. Bestway I can describe this is airbrushing from just ever so slightly above the model. This gives the Silver a natural shading on the lower armor pieces and in the recesses.
  • I followed this up with a Zenithal highlighting of the upper armor plates and head/backpack by airbrushing Runefang Steel. Pay careful attention to getting an even coat on the head, backpack and shoulder pads.
  • With the base metallic finished; I did three thinned airbrush coats of Angron Clear red, followed with a brief spurt of Tamiya Clear red to darken it a bit. The clear red takes a while to dry so it's best to do large groups at once. Tamiya Clear red could also work, but is again slightlly darker than Angron, while agron has a mild orangish tint to it which i like for a vibrant red.
  • Next wash the recesses carefully with Nuln Oil, try hard not to get any on red armor. If you do an easy fix i to go back over that spill with brushed on Angron Clear.
  • Finish the red by Weathering/edge highlighting Runefange steel.

Hope this helps!

To anyone whose response I missed, apologies but I lost a few of them in creating the 2nd draft of the post.  Thank you all so much for commenting, It really keeps me motivated. I'd love to hear what you guys this of this latest batch of Thousand Sons.

The hammer needs to be kept and then combined with biomancy for the purpose of using iron arm. Squish your opponent with magic and thunder! Mwahahaha, apart from the fact it makes the model look incredibly awesome and the scheme is spot on sir. Spot on.

My eyes hurt from the sheer awesomeness of these minis. I love seeing armies as well that I've painted, and seeing how someone else has done something totally different with their minis.

Keep the awesome work up, chap :)

I was able to finish another Two Legionaries:

Legionary Ezarah

I thought it would be nice to post a group shot of the 12 Sons I have so far finished, I still need to finish 3 more but the squad is really coming together. How do you guys think they look as a squad, and how that will translate to an army?

One thing in particular i need opinions on is how the mixed shoulder pads look. Right now my squad has a mix or MK II, MK IV and the decorative pads. Do they fit in a squad together?  Or is is a bit jarring to look at?

On to responses!

I'm still not sure about the hammer but I'll definietly put your vote in the yay column. I agree, there is something about a Librarian wielding a Thunderhammer that just oozes cool.

Thanks friend, I'm glad you like how they are turning out. Your Thousand Sons are awesome too :biggrin.: .

God dammit, just as i was sure on my next projekt..

They look amazing man, good job.

Just as planned...

The red looks great on the Sons!

Thanks, I'm really pleased with how my crash course in airbrushing is going. I'm never going to transition fully to airbrush, but It definitely makes colors like red, and this metallic red more possible.

Inspiring work, brother! I'm happy to see you've stuck with the Visions scheme rather than FW's, it's much more vibrant and more eye catching. And you better keep the Hammer on your Praetor, that weapon is bad ass.

Yeah, Visions has been a huge part of planning my army. I know that visions shows both White and Gold trimmed sons, but I just love the contrast in the white and red. I think that I'll probably do Veterans, Terminators and Characters with gold trim but and the line units will wear white proudly.

Thanks to everyone who left a comment, they really help me keep motivated, and as always I'd love to hear your thoughts n my lastest update.

Great work! The FW scheme with the clear red is just stunningly good and being executed very well. I think you're fine with mixed trim in the TS. They're all centrally MkIV and it keeps them tied together.

How much of the pad trim are you cutting away before you sculpt the detail back on? It's a pretty great idea, although I can see the potential headache of keeping the metallic red in the divots already.

These guys were incredibly fun to model and paint!

They are the first two Chosen for my terminator command squad. I'm fairly pleased with the simple conversion just to set them apart from average terminators. They were heavily influenced by artwork from Visions and I hope it shows. The one sticking point I'd like you opinion on, is the amount of white on the terminators. I took their color scheme from visions, with gold trim on the shoulders, red plume and brown leather straps. I like it, but I keep second guessing myself on how they look and whether they have enough white to fit in with the rest of my Thousand Sons. Thoughts would be incredibly appreciated.

Thanks for the input on the mixed trim, i'm tending to agree with you. Here are some wip phots of the sculpted trim to give you an idea of how it works:

This is gorgeous, Athrawes. Jealousy doesn't come into it.

Thanks Hesh, always happy to hear from you on my project logs, haha.

Outstanding.

Thanks Hydra.

Ridiculously good. Love the red, it's just gorgeous. Damn, so many sweet Legio XV armies around here now!

Cheers,

BTB

Thanks Beat, I'm pleased you like the red, and the progress on my Legio XV.

Perfection tbh.

Are you going to tackle the relic soon? The Lightning head Crystal of dooooom!

I'm not sure how I'd go about modeling the psychic resonator but it would be really cool to try.

I saw these on the Bookface. Looking great man.

Thanks, I love sharing some of the work I'm proud if on the Crusade and Heresy Facebook page, there is so much inspiring stuff there that I get nervous s=about contributing my work. Hopefully they help to inspire others.

Thats all for today! Thank you everyone for the likes and the comments and they really help me settle of ideas and keep this project moving at a brisk (hopefully enjoyable) pace.

Oh damn!!!

The Terminators look great. Excellent use of the Witch Elves hair (edit: I just saw that you used the tails from the High Elf Reavers, not Dark Elf Witch Elves' hair), and nice shoulder pad tutorial

Edited by kizzdougs

Love the terminators, especially the plumes jutting off their backs a'la Visions.

As to your question about the white, I think they could use a touch more. I know there's a few images in Visions where several XVth Legion Terminators have white robes and loincloths, whilst the image showing Magnus flanked by his bodyguards has them with brown loincloths instead, as per your Terminators. Just a thought.
