IA - The Nightguard

So 4 potential years of partnership. Could be interesting.

Bet that the NG would try to avoid telling them the truth about chaos, right?

Also, compiling information that we have on the Nightguard and a few things that we need:

-A more detailed history, specifically how they were founded and when. The idea so far has been for them to have been founded post Qarith Triumph but that was way back when the Insurrection was still quite short. Do we want to change it?

-A more detailed and formalised organization&structure for them. So far they have the Inner Circle, the Tower Masters and the Towers but little official beyond that. blunt has proposed a split between Knights and Rangers, I’ve proposed a more Dark Angels esque division of orders. Any other ideas? What do the rest of you think we should do with their organization?

-Relation to the LB. To what degree do the two interact? How much does the Nightguard’s organization and culture reflect such an interaction?

I like blunts ASoIaF approach. The knights protect the towers and boarders, the rangers ventire into the warp and move very freely, while the knights stay close to the towers and if an incursion occurs they set up fortifications. The rangers wander at the boarders of the warp and contsct the emperor/malcador or whoever is responsible if somethong is going on.

-I like the idea that they are created post-Qarith on Malcador's orders. It's early enough that the Nightguard is composed from all 20 Legions, but late enough that the Imperium is large enough that the LB need help.

-How many divisions were you thinking?

-Starting off, deep ties. The Nightguard, when first being assembled, probably trained exclusively under LB masters. After a few years, they begin developing their own culture and tactics to better represent their more static position.

I've had some more thoughts regarding the Nightguard's organization. Seeing as we want to reference the Nights Watch and their Orders, why not organize the Nightguard along the lines of something like the Dark Angels' Hexagramaton?

So like so:

Cohors Purgans: Destroyers&Heavy Weapons guys. Use Unification wars era weapons that have been forbidden in the legions

Cohors Eques: Assault specialists who use two handed swords for extra knightly feel

Cohors Umbra/Veles: Recon

Cohors Nullus: Pariahs

Cohors Spiritus: Pyskers

Cohors Praetorians: Terminators??

Then within each of these Cohors there's six "grades" of rank: Primus, Secundus, Tertius etc.

So a Nightguard marine could be

Brother Lucius Kastor, Tertius of Cohors Purgans of the Tower of Vigilance.

Thoughts?

That was my thoughts on potential divisions of the Nightguard

That kinda contradicts the LB lore since their daemon-hunting is supposed to be top secret. Alex only finds out about it after becoming Warmaster, and, even then, it's only after he pieces together the clues and a lesson from the Interex.

Actually, do the spirit of the Nightguard contradict the Emperor's intentions of downplaying the threat of Chaos at this time? I still think the Nightguard should stay, but maybe they come into being later.

The latter is one thing I wonder about. They work as an alternative to the Grey Knights, but then that means they're somewhat extraneous in the Crusade.

I'd have thought those specialisations, while they make sense in a Legion, are less handy in a smaller body, and often you'd want a mix of skills instead. Plus for weaponry, I figure each Legionary would retain what's worked best for him.

How known are the Nightguard to the rest of the Astartes?

Why not have the Nightguard evolve from Blunt's template to Sig's template as we move from 30k to 40k? The complexity becomes a necessity as the Nightguard grow larger to counteract more and more Black Crusades?

I would have the Nightguard be completely secret until after the Blood Crusade.

Multiply yes, but divide along the lines of what they wield I'm not so keen on. Each Order should be like a Great Company of the Wolves - some boasting more Terminators, some a greater number of recon squads, but all equipped to meet a wide variety of threats.

I, as well, think that the Nightguard should get more complex the longer it exists. Keep them rather simple but efficient during the Insurrection and then spread them across the galaxy, making them very detailed, elaborated and complex.

And I just can't help myself but everytime I'm thinking about the Nightguard, these guys popp up in my head:

Hellgate: London had so much potential... :(

I didn't mean being just like the Wolves. More that a DA Legion system of wings doesn't suit an organisation which might need something more flexible. The archeotech in particular should really be distributed throughout the Nightguard. So while a warrior might be noted as a Purgus of Tower X (Ranger and Knight variations having pronounced differences) having them all grouped into a cohort each only really serves to make people go "oh right, so these chaps are DA doing the GK's job".

I wasn't thinking that the Orders operated as fighting units. Instead, they are part of an order according to their specialism but squads are composed of a mix of astartes from different Orders to have that flexibility. Should have been clearer on that, my fault
