Well. Best way to check if something looks cool is to built it^^

Of course silver would be best at it looks great on black.but white masks could be cool too.

And for special units like the seeker we could scar the masks. Or remove the eyes. Something like that. I would give everybody a white mask so it seems as if their heads are.floating in the air.

How about every nightguard is either a pariah or a psyker. Would make. Them even more badaaaaaaaaaassss;)

@Thorn: Ok to everything. Don't know what Seguleh Second is. I just searched for a featureless mask. ^^ Though I could imagine the Pariahs wearing these featureless masks. Of course not exactly the same mask but more a modified version of a MK II without any features besides the eyes for example. Something like the Mikhals Warden masks. :smile.:

@Mikhal: Either Pariah or Psyker? Woah that would be awesome and difficult to work out as well. Wouldn't they feel uncomfortable fighting at each others side? And wouldn't it be too similar with Grey Knights? 'Cause they got the Purificators which are a bit like Pariahs.

Well, we have four Towers plus maybe a fifth for the Rangers (justified by the expansion of the Maelstrom, expansion of the Nightguard or something similar).

I'd suggest Vigilance have the fiercest look. Given that both Halcyon Wardens and Lightning Bearers will be represented some Grecian and Japanese elements could be a thing for one or two Towers as well. Then we can have the last Tower favour the blank masks.

Personally I'd be in favour of the NG having a homogenous look but if peeps want the towers to each have an individual looks then I'm not massively opposed to it. Speaking of which. Ideas for tower appearances.

Vigilance-Fur trim to their cloaks and fairly plain deathmasks.

Reason-Drake scale cloaks and more ornate masks(like that worn by the Looking glass knight in Dark Souls 2)

Truth-Plain cloaks and blank face masks.

Light-Face masks which only cover the top part of the face like this ( https://hrexach.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/m1.jpg ) and then perhaps leapoard/jaguar skin cloaks?

Fair point. I'm just throwing out ideas at this stage. The mindset of each group could lead to some aesthetic differences, at least.

I would steer away from coloured hoods as identification, personally. Just seems a tad ninja turtles.

Edit: oops. WiFi I'm this place does strange things.

Also I'm fine with masks (at least for officers) but on the basis that they'd be part of a helmet, so half-masks don't really work for me)

Aaaaand accidental triple post handled :p

As for the Cloaks, Id avoid Patterned Feline Hides. They feel...gaudy... To me. Like a Leopard Print Leotard. Not the most threatening.

I might as well advise against everyone getting cloaks too since thats usually reserved for Captain-Level Marines ordinarily.

As for the Masks, for suggestions are all good but the last one being a Half-Mask would have to be in relation to the Helmet Underneath it. There is no way in hell a Marine is going to be fighting Daemonspawn without a Hermetically Sealed suit or at the very last a veru clear and defined Weakspot as the lower unarmored half of his face thanks to his mask.

In the long term, the simpler we keep things, the better itll turn out. No point in piling on stuff while we dont have the core concept 100% Nailed Down yet as far as I know.

Uhm, keep the uniform look. And for an army so specialized there shouldn't be a prob if the standard marines wear cloaks and furpelts. I mean, they are all veterans. Take the dark angel veterans for example: fully robed and hooded. So I see no problem with an army of elite to have such a look.
If you want to keep it simple and uniform, maybe just skull masks? I'm not sure what the colors of the Nightguard are but if you just have it the same color as the rest of the armor it would differentiate them from Chaplains, while still looking like a unique force.

I have to be honnest Mikhal, that furred cape with the mask does look pretty cool...

I don't know if we really need to give masks to all the Towers/Keeps though. If everyone wears the same armour colours, it should be fine in terms of uniformity. That way, one of the towers may be a bit more ostentatious and so wear masks and capes. Another tower may be a younger offshoot of the first, and keeps the masks, but gets rid of all the ornamentation (giving them the aspect of the faceless masks), but the other two towers can have their own distinguishing features : that way, everyone can get what they want :)

Anyway, can we have a small recap of how they are organised ? ie, do all the towers follow the same basic organisation ? Do they all fit into a complete scheme (a bit as if they were different companies of a chapter) ? Or do they all follow their own structure as their Guard-Master wishes ?

What do the officer cadres look like ? Are there any veterans promoted within their ranks, or do they all seem on pretty much the same level like the Deathwatch ?

How do Psykers and Pariahs fit into their organisation ? Do they form squads, or are they only officer class (or assassin class) marines ?

Side-note, I'm not fond of making them all pariahs or psykers: less is more, and keep it simple. However, their concentration within the Order would be much higher, ie 10% of each, as opposed to barely 1%. Of course, I've always been an adept of not overly powerful people overcoming insurmountable odds by cheer will and work being more badass than a demi-god sweeping obstacles away as if they were nothing => This is why the Primarchs don't seem that interesting to me during the Great Crusade, but they are i the Horus Heresy, because they are going up against their equals.

Each Tower is organized in the same way. I didn't imagine veterans getting promoted(perhaps some kind of marker on their armour tat they've been part of the Nightguard for a long time but nothinh else). Instead I imagined there being Sergeants and Captains(forgit what I named them for the NG) who were chosen by their brothers to lead thzm but then everyone below sergeant is equal.

The NG do recruit more pyskers and praiahs than usual but they don't uniquely recruit them so a higher proprtion will be pariahs/pyskers but nowhere near all or even most of them. They're treated the same as their brothers exceot for that pyskers are used to predict and foresee when and where a deamonic invursion is likely to occur

So does each tower have separate companies with specialities, separate companies that are good at everything, or only kill-team equivalents ?

What about Chaplains, Apothecaries, Techmarines ?

Is there a centralised decision center (which can also be a person or council), or are they completely independent. If the latter, are they even aware of the others' existence ?

And can someone remind me why one of the towers is so small compared to the rest ? I'm at work, so I'm reluctant to blatantly spend half an hour reading through the whole description...

EDIT: can the Gloriana be a fifth tower ?

Certain marines specialise in repairing and maintaining gear(often recruited from the IB) and in healing their brothers but they aren't really marked out as seperate from their brothers in the way apothaceries, techmarines and chaplains are. Chaplains role is fulfilled by sgts.

Tje tower that's smaller is the one on Terra as it'snot near any warp rifts so doesn'r need a many and is essentialy just a toaken garrison

The basic unit is rhe kill team as the Nightguard don't normally deploy in large numbers. 50 of them is a major deployment.

As for dreadnoughts I imagine they would have some but very few and they'd only bring them out on specific occasions. They do't have too many tanks.

A standard deployment is around 20 marines, one of whome will specialise as a healer one a forger and then the others being combat marines

So we could have:

Purgation Deployment: Kill-Team Vermithrane
  • Tower of Reason
  • Officer: Brother-Sergeant Vermithrane
  • Librarians: Prognosticators Xarus and Hephaistoclon
  • Pariahs: Venator Thorgrim
  • Non-Commissioned Officers: Corporals Maxim, Clovis and Gors
  • Battlesmith: Battle-Brother Theophan
  • Medens: Corporal Gors
  • Combat Marines: Twelve other Battle-Brothers
  • Wargear Assets: One Thunderhawk Victory of Reason; one Landspeeder Storm, three Bullock-pattern Jetbikes (two heavy bolters, one Volkite Culverin), five Jet-packs, five suits Tactical Dreadnought Armour; two Incinerators, one psy-cannon (Prognosticator Hephaistoclon), five Lascannons (one on team's Landspeeder Storm), five combined bolters (varying types)

Debriefing: Purgation of 23-19
  • Mission start: 016 254.M31
  • Mission end: 016 258.M31

Team deployed on the surface of 23-19 from orbit embarked on Victory of Reason. Prognosticator Xarus and four battle-brothers used Landspeeder Storm in scouting mission, discovering large concentration of daemon spawn on south-eastern continent and daemon worshipping settlement in northern city. Prognosticator Xarus and Corporal Clovis sent to purge city, rest of contingent tasked with destruction of daemon spawn.

South-eastern continent: no complications.

Northern city: greater daemon summoned by practitionners of magick. Jet-riders destroy mortal forces, Battle-Brother Marstan commended for exemplary use of the Culverin. Prognosticator Xarus charges Greater Daemon aboard Landspeeder. Landspeeder's Lascannon wounds Daemon, before Xarus jumps onto Daemon's back, banishing it with his force-blade. Xarus and Landspeeder crew lost in this action.

  • Result: Mission Completed. Chaotic corruption excised. Exterminatus recommended nonetheless.
  • Casualties: five battle-brothers, incl. Prognosticator Xarus. High. Brother-Sergeant Vermithane to be reprimanded at his next convenience.
