In Midnight clad?

Midnight... dude, that could work

Sons without fathers, standing in midnight clad, we guard the night.

*Looks back at the proposed emblems I'd made, in midnight clad they were too...* :P Yup, I'd be for a more colourful version of the proto-inquisition :)

Could do a compromise of sorts and make a really, really dark blue-black, sort of like a beetle's shell with that iridescent quality to it. It looks like pure nebulous black from a distance but once you get closer you can see the deepest azure where the light strikes the armour.

The blue looks a little purplish to me. What colour do we want the metal? I'm thinking that very pale silver colour that mithril has in LotR

This is what I also thought. A pale silver would look pretty cool imo.

For the colour of the armour I think just plain dark bluish-black would be good as, awesome though your idea sounds Sanguinius, I feel it would be quite hard to paint and make art of

Here's my attempt at a colour scheme for them:

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/sm.php?b62c=@iakk7_h2vwb.i1vKZ_@__@@_h3wDi@@@h2LDk.@h1W0oi2Bds@_._._._.._._@@_@.@@_@..h48F9@h2MY7h1W0o@@_i2Bds@@_@_@.i9v2L&

And officers:

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/sm.php?b62c=@h2vwb_iakk7.i1vKZ@_@@hS3aM.@h3wDi___h2LDkhS3aM_h1W0oi2Bds_@.@.@.@.hS3aM@hS3aM@__@_.__@_..h48F9_h2MY7h1W0ohS3aM.@i2Bds__@_@@.i9v2L&

Combine the latter with this helmet, and you basically have my mental image of Lord Commander Nux (who I might swap to Nix, just for the sake of changing things a little): https://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-images-knight-s-helmet-image6486109

How about something like this? Then the Shoulder trims can be bronze for sergeants, silver for "Guard Captains", and gold for Tower Masters?

I prefer the silver bits lighter, but I like the idea for regular troopers. Though bronze-silver-gold could be a little too obvious. I suggest silver on the top of the helmet, upper body trim and gauntlets for sergeants. Then full silver trim and helmet on captains, and the above amount of gold on Tower Masters.

Actually, I'm liking the dark faceplate and silver gorget more the longer I look at it.

I like Bluntblade's first concept for the Nightguard colours but I think maybe it's a bit busy, all the alternating colour bits would likely be difficult and a chore to paint from a practical standpoint, plus the mouthe grille & piping has never looked right to me in anything other than standard black. Also the idea of higher-ranking NG getting gold trim to distinguish them sound alright in theory but at the moment it just looks out of place, personally I'd prefer to stick with silver for the most part due to it's relationship with the occult with maybe gold for minor embellishments and decoration.

Therefore, I'd like to put forward a revised version.

Colour list:

Midnight Blue- #0A0550

Silver- #EBEBFF

Eye Lenses- #46D2FF

Piping, Grille & Soft Armour- #000000

Basic Nightguard: Plain & simple, but still distinct given how the only other Legion to sport blue is the Wardens of Light (unless the Shepards of Eden revert back to their duck-egg blue after splitting from Raktra and the VII) and they only wear it partially to contrast their relentless bling.

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/sm/bpe=05003C&bpj=EBEBFF&bp=05003C&bpc=05003C&hdt=05003C&hdm=05003C&hdl=05003C&ey=46D2FF&er=05003C&pi=000000&nk=05003C&ch=05003C&eg=EBEBFF&sk=EBEBFF&abs=05003C&bt=EBEBFF&cod=05003C&ull=05003C&lk=05003C&lll=05003C&lft=05003C&url=05003C&rk=05003C&lrl=05003C&rft=05003C&slt=EBEBFF&sli=05003C&srt=EBEBFF&sri=05003C&ula=05003C&lel=05003C&lla=05003C&lw=EBEBFF&lh=EBEBFF&ura=05003C&rel=05003C&rla=05003C&rw=EBEBFF&rh=EBEBFF&bg=FFFFFF&rb=000000&gr=000000&wg=true&aq=true&dm1=true&mk7=000000&/spacemarine.jpg

Sergeants: A simple concept, yet I'll admit I struggled for a while trying to think of something without infringing on the Captain's silver helm. Idly at one of my old Blood Angels Sergeants gave me an answer, the pauldrons!

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/sm/bpe=0A0550&bpj=EBEBFF&bp=0A0550&bpc=0A0550&hdt=0A0550&hdm=0A0550&hdl=0A0550&ey=46D2FF&er=0A0550&pi=000000&nk=0A0550&ch=0A0550&eg=EBEBFF&sk=EBEBFF&abs=0A0550&bt=EBEBFF&cod=0A0550&ull=0A0550&lk=0A0550&lll=0A0550&lft=0A0550&url=0A0550&rk=0A0550&lrl=0A0550&rft=0A0550&slt=EBEBFF&sli=EBEBFF&srt=EBEBFF&sri=EBEBFF&ula=0A0550&lel=0A0550&lla=0A0550&lw=EBEBFF&lh=EBEBFF&ura=0A0550&rel=0A0550&rla=0A0550&rw=EBEBFF&rh=EBEBFF&bg=FFFFFF&rb=000000&gr=000000&wg=true&aq=true&dm1=true&/spacemarine.jpg

Captain: Silver helms, plus any additional trim/decoration on the model itself, I'm considering adding the Sarge's silver pauldrons too but I'm unsure. I reckon the Silver helms will be enough simply because I'm still envisioning the NG's higher-ups wearing SG-styled Death Masks (minus the halo) so with those two combined they'll stand out well.

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/sm/bpe=0A0550&bpj=EBEBFF&bp=0A0550&bpc=0A0550&hdt=EBEBFF&hdm=EBEBFF&hdl=EBEBFF&ey=46D2FF&er=EBEBFF&pi=000000&nk=0A0550&ch=0A0550&eg=EBEBFF&sk=EBEBFF&abs=0A0550&bt=EBEBFF&cod=0A0550&ull=0A0550&lk=0A0550&lll=0A0550&lft=0A0550&url=0A0550&rk=0A0550&lrl=0A0550&rft=0A0550&slt=EBEBFF&sli=0A0550&srt=EBEBFF&sri=0A0550&ula=0A0550&lel=0A0550&lla=0A0550&lw=EBEBFF&lh=EBEBFF&ura=0A0550&rel=0A0550&rla=0A0550&rw=EBEBFF&rh=EBEBFF&bg=FFFFFF&rb=000000&gr=000000&wg=true&aq=true&cloak=000000&dm1=true&mk7=000000&/spacemarine.jpg

Okay, this late one is maybe skirting the edge of the Grey Knight's territory with the whole "Truesilver" thing but I had the idea for an all-silver scheme for a NG elite unit, something akin to the GK Purifiers maybe, or perhaps it could used for the Tower Masters to represent their purity and warding against the taint of the Warp as their armour is painted/ imbued/made/whatever with this blessed silver.

NG Tower Master/Elite:

Golden Chest Eagle/Plastron- #967D32

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/sm/bpe=EBEBFF&bpj=EBEBFF&bp=EBEBFF&bpc=EBEBFF&hdt=EBEBFF&hdm=EBEBFF&hdl=EBEBFF&ey=46D2FF&er=EBEBFF&pi=000000&nk=EBEBFF&ch=EBEBFF&eg=967D32&sk=967D32&abs=EBEBFF&bt=EBEBFF&cod=EBEBFF&ull=EBEBFF&lk=EBEBFF&lll=EBEBFF&lft=EBEBFF&url=EBEBFF&rk=EBEBFF&lrl=EBEBFF&rft=EBEBFF&slt=EBEBFF&sli=EBEBFF&srt=EBEBFF&sri=EBEBFF&ula=EBEBFF&lel=EBEBFF&lla=EBEBFF&lw=EBEBFF&lh=EBEBFF&ura=EBEBFF&rel=EBEBFF&rla=EBEBFF&rw=EBEBFF&rh=EBEBFF&bg=FFFFFF&rb=000000&gr=000000&wg=true&aq=true&cloak=000000&dm1=true&/spacemarine.jpg

I'm imagining them with Captain-like Death Masks (maybe Stormcast Eternal rather than Sanguinary Guard-esque?) and beautifully physique-sculpted armour to represent them being exemplars of everything good and worthy about Mankind. They are atheistic Paladins, disciples not of some false god, but of Humanity itself! Of the Emperor! The Emperor is the pinnacle of Humanity and thus Humanity IS their god! Humanity is the source of their strength, for greater love hath no man than he who would lay down his very soul for Mankind! It is Humanity that empowers them to strike down the daemon and the traitor! It was Humanity that conquered the Galaxy once, and will do so yet again!

I'll have a crack at altering it this morning. Shouldn't take too long.

How about we simply step up the amount of silver as we go up the ranks?

I'll list the colours I use next time, too. My blue skews a bit closer to green than everyone else's (I just like this shade more) and my silver is a little bluish.

OK:

Blue = #01163d

Silver = #e8f5fa

Eyes = #0ac6ff

Black for the joints

My image of a captain:

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/sm/bpe=01163d&bpj=e8f5fa&bp=01163d&bpc=E8F5FA&hdt=e8f5fa&hdm=E8F5FA&hdl=E8F5FA&ey=0AC6FF&er=e8f5fa&pi=01163d&nk=01163d&ch=01163D&eg=E8F5FA&sk=E8F5FA&abs=01163d&bt=E8F5FA&cod=01163d&ull=01163d&lk=e8f5fa&lll=01163d&lft=e8f5fa&url=01163d&rk=e8f5fa&lrl=01163d&rft=FFFFFF&slt=E8F5FA&sli=e8f5fa&srt=E8F5FA&sri=E8F5FA&ula=01163d&lel=e8f5fa&lla=01163d&lw=e8f5fa&lh=E8F5FA&ura=01163d&rel=e8f5fa&rla=01163D&rw=e8f5fa&rh=e8f5fa&bg=e8f5fa&rb=000000&gr=000000&/spacemarine.jpg

The Master's helm for each Tower could vary. The Hunter's Tower Master could inherit Nux's, replete with the scars made by Raktra.

I think i prefer sanguinius's bluer blue, and I always find boots that are different colours from the greaves look goofy, otherwise looking good :)

So is nux a hand, a knight errant or a nightguard?

The boots are a little Converse-ish, I guess, but personally I prefer the less saturated blue. Makes them more sombre, which I think fits better than a more saturated hue.

Nux is a Knight Errant who becomes a Nightguard at the end of the Insurrection.
