Cracking conversion that, I may have to steal it to give my Chimera 3 options when it arrives. I'll leave out the traditional Multi-laser as I've never like it rules wise or aesthetically.

In other new today my Pith Helmeted Ogryn heads arrived! They look fantastic. Now I just need to buy some Bullgryns to put them on... I'm really looking forward to running the Bullgryns to move behind my Infantry and Brutally counter-charge anything that gets to my lines.

So last night I finished a 7 round slugfest against an opponent I can only call "Imperial soup". PL 100, Hammer and anvil, 2 capture points. Ended in a tie with each of us having <10 MODELS left. Carnage.

He know's what I'm about, so he took some serious (Guard Killer) units...

Bad Guys- Thunderfire Cannon, Whirlwind, SM Dev Squad (Missiles), Stormhawk, SM Bikes, Sm assault squad, SM scout snipers+telion, 50 conscripts + Kommissar + Company Commander, and  f*kin Stormlord.  [4 command points]

Good Guys: Venner+ Command Squad, 2 Field Commanders+ squad, DR Commander + DR command squad,  Quartermaster, 4 inf squad, 1 grenadier squad, 3 assault chimeras, 4 heavy weapons teams (las) , 2 earthshaker carriage units of 2 guns each, death riders .

The Game:
Luckily I went first, managed to kill the Cannon of the TFC (the tech marine haunted me, later healing tanks), getting a cheeky 9" disembark+move allowed me to unload grenadiers and an inf squad on his infiltrated scouts, assault telion. I was glad to button up those snipers, surrounded telion so he couldn't disengage. I put 15 wounds on the stormlord.  (First blood)

That stormlord really took offense, because it eliminated most of an inf squad, most of my las crews, and there was general blasting from all of his units. one of my chimeras bit it from the marines. The rest was a flurry of "hits on 2, wounds on 2" devastation.

My turn 2 should have ended that Stormlord, but with 5 meltas, couldn't manage to roll above a 2, at all, with rerolls.

We both dropped bad guys in the back 9 - My 10 riders, his 10 assault marines.

For the rest of the game, we both fought battles of attrition, trying to stem the outflank best we can. I ended up killing his assault marines with "Old Penitent" (Earthshakers) after he killed Venner (Slay the warlord), and he killed my horses with  his stormhawk.

We rolled 2 extra turns and in the end, he had 6 conscripts, Kommissar, Officer on my defensive point, I had an assault chimera on his. We both owned each others points (+3), had line breaker(+1), and our Warlord slaying and first blood cancelled out.

Tie match... and the devastation was evident. I had 1 Earthshaker and crew left, 1 officer, 1 command melta, 2 chimeras left.
he had that cluster of 8, and a stormhawk that was down to its last wound.

TL:DR

Lots of boring details, so I'll get down to brass tacks:

I've tried plasma guns in my inf squads, and "meh". Flamers, all day. Every day. I'll put plasma pistols on my Watchmasters, but being able to threaten better in overwatch? Yeah that's king.

Assault Chimera? Yes please. I was skeptical about it, because I like inf better, but having the firepower, and meltagun nose makes it a good assault tank.

I run my command squads exactly how they're modeled standard, one plasma, one melta... seems to be a good mix.

I liked the heavy crews but man were they squishy. I'm not sure if anyone BUT a stormlord could kill them so fast, but they're worth thinking about.

I'll cosign on earthshaker carriages until the primarchs come home.

Got my Bullgryns washed this evening (well paintwise, they could still use a decent clean but you know how they are about personal hygiene...)

Next step highlights and detailing. :)

Game 3 of 8th. This time vs Adeptus Mechanicus , Big guns never tire, Dawn of War deployment

I played full Astro Mil, to test out the old models that got some relevance these days.  Notably the "Devil Dogs" , Manticore.
2 inf squads

3 Conscript squads

Long story short:
The Ad Mech player thought I was kicking ass for the first two turns, but after all my armor died to the INSANE AMOUNT OF PLASMA spam, with REROLLS (all misses within 6") from their cheeky HQ......

After my armor was toast, I was trying to rely on conscript FRFSRF to do the nasty.... a few lucky shots, but meh. Anything they had with multi wounds, got healed for d3 every turn, so anything you dont kill outright is good as new next turn.

He ends up spamming me with rerolls of plasma until I can't possibly hold enough objectives, managed to outright kill  conscript squad (cool).  I concede the game at turn 5 because I can't possibly do the thing.

I'm also told that AdMech got nerfed, and would have been MORE brutal in 7th. Wow.

Useful tactic:
I had 3 squads of conscripts, so I was prepared to trade wounds for ground. When assaulted or in the assault phase against gnarly close combat foes: remove all your dead from the 3" pile in bubble of the next squad that's going to hit you, rob them of those attacks.

example: My conscript squad is a giant bubble and it's getting hit on 2 sides , after his dudes score like 8-12 wounds on me, I remove all the dead from the OTHER side of the squad, more than 3" deep into it, so he can't pile in closer than 1".

If using them as a defensive shield, buffet the front ranks so your deaths can be used as deep strategic spacers.... back ranks close so if you move in 6" you can still rapid fire.

(He "fine tooth" combed the rules after I robbed him of these attacks, and we're pretty sure this is legit. So let me know if anyone comes up with a reason why this isn't valid."

Units:
3 conscript squads with officer/commissar support : yes, might make a list with 4 conscript squads

LR tanks: Yes

Devildog: not reliable enough.  Maybe as a flamer tank vs orks

Manticore: Yes, but since it is it's own heavy slot per: bad for BGNT, I might use three of these next time.
Scout Walkers: Yes, early game lascannon and HK missiles are useful and cheap.

Today my imperial guard tabled a BA opponent in a 2k game (Turn 4). He had:

Corbulo

Mephy

chaplin

7 death company

death company dread

raven

land raider crusader

5 hammernators

las pred

missile dev squad.

I had: 5 officers, 2 commies, 50 conscripts, 40 guard, Special wep squad (3 flame), command squad (2 melta), 10 vets with hades drill, 6 mortars, 2 twin las sabres, 3 autocannons, manticore, basilisk, 2 quad mortars, priest, 8 crusaders, 3 chimeras and an eversor assassin.

Crusaders are great! 3++ and powersword for 15pts! combined with the acts of faith and the preist to buff attacks, great unit. the rest of it performed well. I still love the hades drill and vet squad (plasma pistol and 2 plasma guns) the squad put 4 wounds on mephy (then he perils himself for the last) and the drill ate the pred and LRC. conscripts are good; if a little boring.

It was one of those games where he deployed and we both knew the outcome, I lost: 20 guardsmen, 15 conscripts, 8 crusaders, 2 chimeras, the eversor (like every game), both sabres, one commy, the special wep squad, the command squad and one officer.

I think the biggest change i found in 8th was that my manticore fires all 4 rockets every game now! its great!

Why did you know right after deployment who won?

Due to me having so many more dudes than him, we could both see the most likely outcome. Firepower > elites

Finished my 2nd hellhound variant today par the DKoK commanders, both magnetised:

Both are for my DkoK detachment which I'm using against my mates Tau today.

I normally run loads of tanks amd sit back but today I'm trying lots of infantry squads, flamers and hellhounds and just going to try to human wave the Tau to death.

Working on a Stygies Tank Destroyer conversion at the moment. I've managed to find a good hull housing for the cannon and shortened it slightly since this picture, just got to green stuff a fair bit next!

Got more greenstuffing to do and bits to add but I'm happy where I'm at for now.

Today my guard defeated the treacherous Adeptus mechanicus at 50 PL. The Basilisk will receive company honours, for one shoting one of those Ad-Mech AT-AT thingys first turn. Then putting the hurt on Cawl. Remedial training will go to my Bullgryns for failing to squash some Skitari Infiltrators after 2 turns of combat.

Today I brutally annihilated a Tyranid army at 2000 pts, Relic mission on chequered map deployment with a 9" radius central empty zone. Not sure how I did it yet!

I had:

2 company commanders

2 commissars

2 primaris psykers

5 infantry squads with flamers

1 Artemia Hellhound

1 Bane Wolf

1 Basilisk

1 Hydra

1 Trojan

2 Sabre searchlights

3 h. bolter hwt

3 mortar hwt

1 Scion commander

2 Scions squads with plasmaguns

1 Taurox Prime

1 DKK Death Riders commander

2 DKK Death Riders

2 Elysian Sniper teams

1 Elysian Officier of the Fleet

1 Elysian Vendetta

1 Elysian command squad with meltas

He had:

Swarmlord

Flyrant

20 Genestealers

3 shooty Warriors

3 Hive guard

5 Zoanthropes

3 ripper swarms

3 Biovores

1 Malanthrope

1 Haruspex (I think...) inside the giant flying egg

1 Exocrine

He deployed his Biovores, Warriors, and Hive guard to the rear. Swarms and Egg with Haruspex in reserve. All the rest as close as possible to the centre, within the Malantrhope area.

I deployed 2 infantry squads with an officer, commissar, and psyker on a large ruin near the right edge; the other identical set on the ground near the left edge; a 5th squad protected my left flank. Inside this area I deployed support squads in a couple of ruined buildings and all support vehicles nearby, while the flame tanks had corridors on the right and centre. Behind my central line of guardsmen I had the DKK riders. The Vendetta embarked the melta squad and stayed stationary all the game. Scions and MotF in reserve.

T 1:

Tyranids begin, I fail to seize. His centre advances protected by the Malanthrope and surrounds the relic. His fire badly damages the Hellhound (deadly Biovores+Exocrine!) and destroys an infantry squad. With the screen gone, he is able to assault with 20 genestealers using the Swarmlord's double move order, engaging a Psyker and 5 DKK cavalry. I lose the psyker but he rolls badly for the cavalry and, along with some insane rolls on my part, I only lose 2 horses and kill 4 genestealers in return, despite having FnP themselves.

On my turn, Hellhound and Banewolf run towards his centre (and the relic); officer of the Fleet deep-strikes on the empty quadrant to my left, within 18" from his centre; all Scions deepstrike in his rear, 9" from Biovores, Warriors, and Hive guards, and then annihilate the Biovores with overcharged plasma. the Hydra, Hellhound, and a couple of infantry squads almost murder the Flyrant. The Vendetta and the Snipers kill the Exocrine. The rest kills a Zoanthrope. DKK riders fight in the shooting phase (great order), then the other squad and the officer charge in, along with a commissars and an officer...8 more genestealers die, and in return I only lose a couple of horses.

T 2:

Flying egg arrives just behind the genestealers and drops the Haruspex. I lose a couple of Scions, some guardsmen, and the Hellhound to fire. Swarmlord charges into Banewolf and takes 5 wounds from overwatch, then destroys it. More genestealers and a horse die. Haruspex charges and eats half an infantry squad in front of my vehicles.

The lone survivor of an infantry squad advances to block the swarmlord in a passage between ruins, fires and wounds the beast. Hero! Taurox and some more fire kills 3 Zoanthropes. Elysian squad with 4 meltas disembarks from the Vendetta and ruin the Haruspex, leaving it with a couple of wounds. The Scions kill the Hive guards. The Hydra finishes the Flyrant. It's a massacre.

T 3:

Flying egg wreaks havoc among guardsmen in cover. The Warriors cannot reach the Scions because they are on a high ruin, and only kill one with fire. The Swarmlord takes another wound from the hero with the flamer, then charges and eats it. Haruspex charges and kills some more guys. The three remaining genestealers kill the last horse from a squad, and then are wiped out.

Concentrated fire very easily takes down the Swarmlord. DKK riders charge and easily kill the Haruspex. The flying egg is badly damaged. He concedes.

I have about 80% of my forces left on the field. He has the ripper swarms, 2 warriors, a wounded flying egg, and the Malanthrope (which I ignored the whole game).

To be honest, I was very surprised to compare the insane amount of stuff I could field compared to his. I think he invested too much in big monsters, perhaps it would have gone differently had he fielded more fast giblings. I thought I was doomed when on T1 I got 20 genestealers in my deployment zone, but they did much less than expected. My shooting phases were murderous, and the DKK riders were simply great as they held and beated a genestealer charge. that FnP against S4 attacks is really good, and their horses' attacks hurt. I did not miss LR tanks at all.

Did I field an unfair cheesy list? Did he field a weak one? Or was it just a combination of deployment and a good day?

3x Biovores.

Granted, his list isn't very competitive, he mostly wanted to try out 3 Brood Lords.
It didn't end well for them, one got soloed by the Hellhound, one got swarmed by Guardsmen and one got shot by the Macharius at almost point blank range since it didn't have anything else to shoot at that turn.
The Malcador didn't impress me though, it ended up dying (and *not* exploding, eventough I even spent a CP to try it go boom), but to it's defense it didn't have alot of viable targets and I rolled pretty meh with it. I probably also played to defensively with it.

Can't wait to paint the Malcador and the Macharius, such beautiful tanks! :D

Glad to see all these glorious victories for the Emperor! :D

I too vanquished some space clowns yesterday that attempted to interfere with out lines at Kondor. Their annhilation was swift and painful! B)

Pics to follow... :)

As promised some shots from my Fate of Kondor campaign game on Saturday.

Played 1250pts vs space clowns

I was concerned that I would be wiped off the table against the clowns seeing as more than 1/3 of my list was sunk into my Bullgryns, LC, Priest, Psyker and Valk.

Although they are a tough assault unit, the Harelquins ability to fall back out of combat shoot and charge back in meant they would either run away leaving me flat footed with them or shoot them to pieces and slice them in combat with shear weight of attacks.

Fortunately that was not so, I only lost 1 Bullgryn all match, they even shrugged off 4 melta pistol shots rolling 6's on their saves. B)

They doubled back and cleaned up all the clowns which are laid waste to my lines. These guys continue to be all-stars :)

Deployment / Top of 1

End game, glory to the victors (2nd Bullgryn is holding the front of the building secure)

Love the report on the Bullgryns, I'm definitely investing in some as soon as I can figure out how to give them Kriegish gas masks and stahlhems.

It's Conscripts and Scions who makes Guard that good.
Personally I wouldn't mind a nerf to them since it seems justified and I rarely play with either.

Or maybe give the game some time to mature with codex releases and experience, before passing judgement on models you don't play by your own admission?  Let's not start altering the game based on a sample source of half a dozen forum anecdotes and Youtube videos.  Just a thought.

Razorwings are way worse than conscripts, anyway, they can actually kill things.

  • 2 weeks later...

Today in a rematch vs blood angles. The 32nd firedrakes were victorious again, wiping them all out (tabling). Best moment had to be the vicious knight "Bob" being slain by mass inferno and heavy flamer deluge from the multiple chimera and hellhounds surrounding it. Supported by the brave officer "The Fat LT" and his command squad of 2 meltas. Manticore rockets and earthshaker rounds striking the beast that was Bob. bringing him down in one fell swoop (turn 1).

As the dust settled (turn 4); close to two dozen blood crazy giants in black were dealt with, debris from a stormraven littered the ground, the husk of a predator nestled in a ruin, the char-coaled corpses of scouts, the ashes of devastators from plasma fire. However, all was not in out favour, the dead must be mourned. The Fat LT and his brave command squad were cut down as frag missiles decimated their position with sniper rounds bursting through the LT's chest. 2 chimeras were little but hulls, burning gently. close to 2 dozen guardsman had been cut apart by the crazed giants in black as they burst from the wreck of the raven, charging over the bodies of the autocannon crews devastated by "Bob". 2 scions of the 65th water wierds were struck by frag missiles as they broke open the devastators position. A handful of guardsman were burnt alive as the handful of giants in red struck forth with a heavy flamer, only to be greeted by lasgun and plasma fire. The unnamed berserk ally from the assassins died, but in his death the warlord of the blood angels was slain, a figure with an axe that removed heads as easy as walking, with wings as a dark as the night and blood red armour.

All in all, fun game! heavy flamers rocks! the 32nd firedrakes with 16 flamer weapons and 14 plasma love it! Was going for the fire and ash theme and it works!

Game again today, this time vs my gaming store manager's Dark Angels (the most loyal of chapters... or so he says)

This was a win 14-10 to me using the cards. Both of us had good and bad rounds. It ended turn 5.

DA: Ezekiel, Azreal, Primaris LT, 3 razorbacks (1 twin las, 2 las/ twin plas), 15 tact marines, 2 dark talons, 2 darkshrouds and 2 plasma redemeptor dread

Guard: 3 CC, Prime,Primaris psyker, PC, 30guardsmen (2 plasma guns), 39 conscripts, 10 scions (4 plasma guns, 2 plasma pistols), 3 chimeras (2xHF on all), 3 Artemia pattern hellhounds (HF hull on all), eversor assassin, hades breaching drill + 10 vets (7 shotgun, 2 plasma guns, 1 plasma pistol), manticore, basilisk, 2 HWT squads (1 mortar, 1 autocannon), SWS (3 flamer), CS (2 melta), commissar and 2 cyclops demolition charges.

Survivors:

Primaris LT (3 wounds), Ezekiel (2 wounds), Razorback (las, twin plas) (7 wounds)

6 conscripts, 7 vets, 6 guardsmen, 2 comapny commanders (2/3 wounds), primaris psyker, platoon commander, commissar, basilisk, manticore and 1 chimera (4 wounds).

The game was absolute carnage! My favourite moment had to be either my hellhound exploding doing 3 wounds on Ezekiel, a redemptor, a razorback, Azreal and 2 wounds on the primaris LT.  Followed by a cyclops demo killing Azreal and doing 7 more wounds on the redemptor next turn!. Those cyclops' are great!

Not specifically guard related however just purchased an airbrush and compressor today! Id been eyeing one for a while and an awesome deal on the compressor came up I couldn't pass on!

Hopefully that will speed up my Infantry painting and will ensure and nice clean look to my Baneblade project. :D

Did I field an unfair cheesy list? Did he field a weak one? Or was it just a combination of deployment and a good day?

No Manticores, one Prime Turox, and unless the Elysian Vendetta has some kind of special rules your vehicle selection seems rather polite.

I think he went psychic heavy. On one 'nid-only forum there's been some pretty heated debates on Warrior CC verse range fits. With the change to Instinctive Behavor he could have thrown in a couple mid-field units of peons to deal with IG deep strikers . Seriously does anyone even use Scions with flamers or volley guns anymore?

Unless you feel bad about using any deep strike I think your list was on the up and up.
