Dear All,

Long time lurker, first time poster looking to share my 30K wolves in the hope of motivation and guidance with list building as I have only played once in the last 10 years and the current rule set seems somewhat daunting!

This will be my fourth Space Wolves army since I began playing 2nd edition 40K and the heresy era has got me interested again after starting and failing to complete large Tau and Ad Mech armies.

Like many, i'm waiting for the next black book before committing to building too many of the units but have purchased the Calth and Prospero sets.

Firstly 10 tacticals in MkIV, another 10 to be added as I understand numbers are the way to go with these guys and will look more impressive. Have the new transfer sheet but waiting till I've completed a few squads before doing the markings.

Let it snow? Yes, i committed to snow basing the whole squad after this tester.

My Calth comtemptor all wolfed up, a little more than I initially intended but I've have decided the majority of the troops will be less embellished.

W.I.P of my Ulrik, will be a stand in Centurion Chaplain until I build an appropriate Praetor.

Group shot including Terminators, Assault Squad, the beginning of MkIII tactical squad and my Sip Kaerls ready to fend off a boarding action.

Closer look at the MkIVs and Dread after application of Valhallan Blizzard. Spent way too long on the bases to then cover up with snow but will know for future.

So any critique will be great, things i need guidance on are:

  • Whether to weather with chip effect on armour & dust type wash on legs or leave relatively clean.
  • Which squad markings to apply and where. Dreads left kneepad is blank for this purpose.
  • How to equip a Praetor?
  • Whether to swap new Tartaros for more Cataphract armour or have squads of both.
  • How to equip Sisters of Silence to best complement Wolves.
  • How to arm Tacticals, think I want to take the extra close combat weapon for fluff, is it worth it?
  • Best colour for the base rims torn between brown or back to black.
Look forward to hearing from you, will hopefully get better pictures up soon once I master my phones camera!

A few close ups of the Bondsman / Kearls prior to painting. The GSC kits go together nicely with minimal knife work to remove iconography. Armed with shotguns and flamers to ward off boarders or on board infestations.

Whilst some of them are little bit hunched over in terms of posture, I reasoned that spending the majority of their life in the confines of a spaceship one might develop a stoop.

Replaced Genestealer iconography with wolf trinkets showing their loyalty / borderline god worship of their masters.

Completed building the Bondsmen squad which will probably be fielded as Grenadiers from the militia list. To fill out an allied detachment i will add an enginseer / techpriest with servitors and maybe some larger servitors as Ogryn counts as. Could I justify a few heavy weapons teams as ship crew or Fenrisian Kearls. I know they sed a lot of weapons teams when defending the Fang.

The Wolf Guard. Want to expand this Cataphractii squad to 10 men. Replaced the standard grenade harness with a launcher from the Wulfen. Not too keen on the Wulfen models themselves but the kit has some great bits including the thunderhammer here and decorative totems. Trying to find some decent sized plumes to finish them off and whether or not to bite the bullet and apply the stock shoulder pads rather than wait for potential Forgeworld pads.

I'm looking for them to end up reflecting these chaps from the artwork.

Wolf 12

These are the jump pack equipped assault squad. Used sanquinary guard jump packs, mix of MkIV and MkVI armours. These guys all got sculpted pads but with little other embellishment besides the leader who I'm not entirely happy with; he has 40K wolf armour and a highly flammable pelt under his exhausts.

Are your cataphractii using Dwarf helmets?

Wow awesome conversion work here your I really like the cataphractii the dwarf bits are perfect keep up the awesome work

Yes they are from the Irondrakes/Ironbreakers box. (And as you get 2 sets of heads  I still have enough build a squad of abhumans ) Shields have some nice knotwork on them too but are not wooden like some wolves have been depicted carrying. The axes sadly are not much use, too dainty in the handle.

Shaved about a third off from the bottom to get a similar size to the regular heads. When I was looking at this artwork the dwarf helmets immediately sprung to mind but they are even closer than I imagined:

The Custodes' plumes would work great for what you're going for; great sense of movement to them.

Orks have a decent selection as well, as to some of the AoS horses (at least their tails).

I have quite a few ork topknots which will go on power armour and will probably let my custodes keep their own plumes. I have marauder horsemen so will have a look at their tails and give it a dryfit. Hadn't thought of that, thanks for the pointer!

Hey all,

I would be extremely grateful for some urgent advice.....

I'm building a praetor and runepriest (or whatever the heresy equivalent is) and would like some advice on the loadouts.

Both will be in Cataphractii.

Runepriest will defintely have an axe of some sort, do force weapons exist in 30K? Haven't got my books to hand. Other hand will likely be free as if casting a power (Fenrisian powered obviously   ).

I'm very open to suggestions as to how to arm the praetor, loaded for combat as is fit and proper for a Jarl of the Rout. I have bits to equip almost anything you can come up with.

Thanks in anticipation

Quinn

Praetor should run with paragon blade and digital weapons combi weapon either bolter or melta to one shot then charge.

Digi weapons hive you the +1 attack back that you lose for paragon blade being specialist.

Paragon blade is +1 strength ap2 murderous strike.

Do not leave home without it.

Also if possible go tartar termi and add iron halo. This will give 4+ invul while allowing you to carry out sweeping advances.

Saying that only worth it if he is in a squad of tartars or other marines who can sweep

Thank you Dantay,

I will likely be running him with Cataphractii terminators, and modelling him from them too so will have to give up the sweeping advance.

Will likely model another in Artificer armour should it be a recurring issue.

Would the long Ragnar style chainsword be appropriate as a Paragon blade? The description seems pretty broad.

And how to model digital weapons? I only remember it as a wargear card back in second edition.

EDIT: I have found the thread discussing digital weapons but any further ideas would be great!

Not sure if 1 guy constitutes the productive weekend that I had planned however here is my WIP runepriest. Needs a few more details once I affix the torso to legs permanently, a little work around the stomach to hide the crude chop and shop.

Let me know what you think, hopefully i did enough to make it apparent that he has cataphractii armour. Kudos if you can guess all the parts.

Struggling to decide between Praetor in Artificer armour and Iron Halo, Cataphractii, or Tartaros with Iron Halo as Dantay suggested. Might come back to him later as I've finished the runepriest this evening so should crack on with troops for now. Going to expand my 10 man mark III and mark IV squads to 20 each.

More advice needed, tempted to mix armour marks in the squad, as it makes little sense why 20 would have one type and 20 another. But mkIII is noticably bulkier, the only thing that would tie them together would be pack markings.

Are others integrating their new mkIII plastics into existing squads or making new ones?

  • 2 weeks later...

For my assault squads, I mix marks 2,3 & 5, generally mark 4 stays on its own, because the jump pack is so distinctive, but using marks 2 & 5 with 4 also look good as they are slimmer than mark 3.

A reasoning behind keeping a pack all of 1 amour mark is that they are all inducted at the same time so got the same armour, you could sprinkle some mark 3 into the 4 to represent pack leaders who are veterans. Maybe mix mark 3 arms on to mark 4 marines etc, just for variation, fluff purposes would e the up armouring of the fore arms as the plates would be used to deflect enemy blades in close combat.

Mix of armour marks is also down to attrition... Plate gets wrecked to the point of being non-salvage-able so they get a new suit... bulk out mark 4's with pelts etc...

I love up heavily armoured mark 4 destroyers for this very purpose..

I am doing an assault squad which is half mark 4 and half mark 3 so can show you how hey look side by side if that helps?

  • 2 weeks later...

Completed assembly of a full Tac Squad in MkIII, quite a slog. The backpacks don't go together perfectly which is irritating but otherwise a great great kit. got a Heresy campaign beginning in January so have a lot of painting to do over the next few weeks.

My Runepriest, names and background to follow but known for now simply as "the Long" towering over the rest of the Rout.

And my Wolf Lord / Praetor known as "Grimnir the Stout" (or the short but never to his face). Equipped as per Dantay's advice, Tartaros armour, Iron Halo (represented by iron wolf helm), paragon blade, digital weapons (again I'm thinking of iron wolf helm eyes to represent these) and a combi-melta. Hard to tell here without a comparison shot but he is a little shorter than a normal tartaros, I shaved too much away fitting tartaros legs to Grimnar's torso. He does however make up for it by being exceptionally broad. I have affixed a tartaros helm to his rear waist to aid any WYSIWIG argument.

I have been informed by my opponents in the campaign that I will be facing at least one of the new Porphyrion knight as well as a typhon which will put some real pain on my mainly infantry force. As i hope to have a little money left after christmas I intend to visit warhammer world and purchase a lord of war of my own, any advice as to which one will be best for anti armour (super heavies) and inkeeping with the wolves ethos. I'm leaning towards a Cerberus (and a spartan if i can afford both), or one of the fellblade chassis.

As always any advice will be greatly appreciated.

A Typhon and a Porphyrion?

Get a sock, an a couple of old metal dreadnaughts, that should even things up a bit

The dwarf shields are pretty cool, but I did not use them.

I am using pennies which I smooth out with putty. You ca pant a wood grain on one side and a design on the other :smile.:

I cheat and paint a large design, which I hen use he computer to shrink and can print off multiple copies for a whole unit. Just needs glued on and weathered  :biggrin.:

You could save pennies and go for a Sicaran Venator. Maybe not as beef as the Cerberus, but can hinder Superheavies if its gun does the job. Plus not too many points so you can use it for another Lord of War or the Spartan.

Btw if you do not want the axes, I could probably find a use for them. I use them on a lot of my models, as you can see from my assault squad

Btw, the Kaerls look great and your conversion work is really good. I like Jarl Stout :tu:

  • 2 weeks later...

@dantay_XV I've used the few axes in that kit (Ironbreakers) they are mostly equipped with hammers unfortunately. I imagine the other dwarf kit has more axes in. Perhaps the rumoured Duardin releases will have something even better to scavenge.

So I went to Warhammer World last week, got a Spartan, Baneblade and some mkIII assualt weapons (which were out of stock so had to be posted, a power cut preventing the logisitics of bringing me  a set from the warehouse). PICTURES TO FOLLOW.

Warhammer world is amazing, been once before but this time went into the exhibition, worth every penny of the very reasonable admission. And the beer is strooonnngg!

So treadheads, i'm looking for the best build out of the baneblade kit for 30K, everything else i'm equipping by rule of cool or fluff but this is a leveller for when I face Lords of War in upcoming campaign.

Finally had a chance to get painting. The issue with grey is you can spend a lot of time creating what look like unpainted miniatures. These have all been primed mechanicus, dawnstone & lahmian highlight, washed with badab black & agrax mix, tidied with dawnstone and lahmian mix again.Administratum edge highlights will come later.

All the brown will either end up gold, leather or bone and at last they don't look like bare plastic anymore.

Decided once this mob are completed i will reward myself with building the superheavies before getting back to the 20 mkIII tacticals and 10 man assault squad. Hopefully by then Inferno will have dropped and ill be able to finish units with markings.
