I am hyped for 8th and since I've sold all my marines (three moving boxes full...) I'll have to start a new army. And that will be a primaris marine army. I love the colour scheme of the Emperor's Spears chapter, and the choice was clear when I learned that Aaron Dembski-Bowden (my favourite BL-writer) is writing a novel about them. I really hope he will flesh them out!

I am not a great painter, but I am happy with the way I've found to paint them; it's fast and it looks okay. I hope you agree! I really would like to hear your critique and suggestions! I haven't decided on weathering yet...

Recipe for blue (pictures below):

1. Undercoat with Army Painter Crystal Blue spray

2. Wash the whole model with 50/50 Lahmian Medium and Drakenhof Nightshade. Try to remove wash from larger "plates" with the brush to make step 3 easier.

3. Drybrush the whole model with Crystal Blue - to "clean" the smooth plates.

4. Highlight with GW Lothern Blue (vehicles are drybrushed instead and the plates are "cleaned" again with watered down Crystal Blue)

5. Fine highlight of Fenrisian Grey

For White:

1. Spray white and paint all Ulthuan Grey (f.x. Helmets that I didn't glue on), or paint it up from Celestial Grey to Ulthuan Grey. Remember to water down your paints!

2. Small stuff like helmets gets an all over wash of 50/50 Lahmian Medium and Nuln Oil. Larger pieces gets the mix in the crevices.

3. Larger areas gets cleaned up with watered down Ulthuan Grey.

4. Highlight with White Scars

Basing:

0. Paint all black (including stones and rocks

1. Make patches of Agrellan Earth. Not to much

1a. Drybrush rocks with Eshin Grey, Administratum Grey and lastly Ulthuan Grey (lightly)

2. Cover everything except Agrellan Earth patches and most of the stones with Stirland Mud.

3. Wash everything with Agrax Earthshade

4. Lightly drybrush everything with Steel Legion Drab

5. Lightly drybrush everything with Zandri Dust

6. Very lightly drybrush with Ushabti Bone

7. Paint some random areas with Athonian Camoshade

8. Cover many but small patches with some dark green flock. I use Woodland Scenics Fine Turf

9. Place some GW and or Army Painter tufts and turfs (f.x. Mordheim Turf and AP Swamp Tuft)

10. Paint edges with Rhinox Brown

It is very fast and easy! Here's some pictures:

I've wanted to see Emperor's Spears ever since I glimpsed A D-B's adorable avatar.

I don't know whether you're a great painter or not, but you're certainly an accurate one if your highlights are to be believed, and that's sometimes already hard to achieve in the first place. So is a white as clean as this one.

And kudos for trying to drill all of your assault cannons barrels. Yeah, they're not as perfect as they could be, but these barrels are already small enough that mistakes are way to easy to make. I can't count the amount of bolter muzzles I butchered through the years either.

I like your test model more than your stormhawk, but then again I find only Dark Angels have good-looking flyers.

  • 3 weeks later...

I finally got hold of my Dark Imperium box, and I have started painting the sweet, sweet primaris marines. Three are done at the moment. As you can see, the standard is a little lower than before; I need to find a balance between quality and quantity - otherwise I know I won't have a chance of finally finishing painting an army.

Thank you, GrandMagnus and Idomeneus!

I don't regret my choice of an unknown chapter - I just wish mr. Aaron Demski-Bowden would tell us from which legion the Spears stems. Just to have an idea of general mood/tactics/unit choices and so on. It is so annoying having to wait half a year or more for that damn book :)

I am kind of hoping for Dorn, Corax or Guilliman - but judging from ADB's Emperor's Spears YouTube playlist I almost think they will be a civilised offshoot of the wolves... which would be really cool in my opinion. Viking marines without the wolf-part!

Fairly sure he already has, but perhaps not in so many words? There's a thread in the Black Library forums where they've been conversing...

What? Where? When?! Show me, please? Or tell me what was written, please!

As an active member here, there's no harm in asking A D-B himself, the worst you'll get is a "not telling" :tu:

One can always hope, but I don't think he'll indulge us...

I believe it's the "not telling" option for now.

I wasn't saying A D-B had dropped their geneseed, was saying that you'd already asked him, roughly speaking (by requesting information and asking questions about their character, that he could easily have broadly answered by saying "well they're Dorn descendants, so take that for what it's worth..." For example, but which so far he's chosen not to).

Ah, got it. Thought you'd seen something I hadn't. Well, back to patiently waiting :)
