***EDIT***

This originally started out as my RG PLOG and I've had a blast posting. Recently I decided to make my own homebrew chapter. I'd love for you to check out the entire thread but if you want to jump to what is current go here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/339466-the-vindicet-honorem-detachment-has-landed/page-17?do=findComment&comment=5164003

***EDIT END***

I've got a WIP thread in the WIP section but after talking to Our Glorious Moderator, Race, I am going to create a similar thread here in the Ravenspire portion of B&C. I'd love to be able to have more feedback from RG players. I plan on making this more of a PLOG type thread that will include my WIP stuff but also bat reps, lists, questions, etc.

I'll probably run them both tandem, but to start here is the basics of the story behind my RG army:

There is a story in the lore about the world of Baran. Long story short is a detachment of Raven Guard got wiped out by Eldar trickery. The world is described as a beautiful Eldar Maiden world with oceans, forest, rolling steppe plains, and lush vegetation. I was drawn to the story because the RG got screwed (yet again) and the setting seemed perfect for a narrative driven story. From a modeling perspective the basing needed to match the world would be perfect because it would provide opportunity to help my army stand out since an all black army can get kind of boring.

My Raven Guard detachment is on a revenge (Vindicet) and honor (Honorem) mission centered on the world of Baran. Their goal is to attempt to recover a lost relic that the previous detachment had and exact revenge on the Biel Tan Eldar that shamed them roughly 100 years ago.

I got some work done on my devastator squad this evening. I ran them, a lascannon predator, and shrike in a corner last game and they put in work. Shrike's benefit to reroll all misses was awesome. For now I'm painting up the bodies of the whole unit but only going to complete two lascannons and the sgt. After that I'll probably work on two plasmas so I have more options for the squad, or I can put them into a tac squad if I want.

I made a mold from the RG deathwatch character. It's a raven skull with wings. I add that to every sgt's leg to signify his position. I think it's a cool little thing that helps to make the army mine.

I didn't want the sgt to hold his scanner because I don't like the way it looks. I prefer the chainsword hand and gun so I did some chopping and filing and attached it to his leg. I think it turned out pretty good:

Wow I had a whole reply typed out and I guess I closed the window before posting...

Here's how I paint my black:

50/50 mix Vallejo Black and Vallejo Black Grey

Three layers of Nuln Oil wash to bring it back down

I wish I could get away with two layers of wash but it still seems to grey for me. I do like how the wash makes the black nice and rich. I'm thinking of trying a batch of marines with more of a 75/25 mix so I can get away with two layers of wash.

As far as list building goes I don't have anything I'm working towards, except to field more painted models. I've been in the hobby a little over a year but I'm a slow builder and painter because of my work/family/hobby balance.

So far I've got five units completely painted to a decent standard:

  • 10 man tactical squad (some magnets, and a couple special/heavy weapons guys so really it's 13 models)
  • 5 man assault squad (magnets for special weapons)
  • 5 man scout sniper squad (magnetized missile/sniper guy)
  • 3 man inceptor squad (magnetized arms in case I buy plasma bits)
  • 5 man cataphractii squad (all arms magnetized, custom made shoulder pads that I cast)

I try to include those units in my lists to make the board look better, but it's not a requirement. Last game I had just finished my cataphractii and didn't even take them because they didn't fit the build.

I like to play fun/thematic armies so I usually include my jump troops, and I will eventually get my VV painted/magnetized up to be able to run them. I have a LR but I tend to play smaller games and that eats up a lot of points/PL so it doesn't see much play. I did run a lascannon predator last game that did a lot of work for me, that may be something I make a point to include going forward.

So to go along with my theme I need dead Aeldari for basing material. Picked up this lot from a trading site. Out of curiosity what do you think it's worth? I paid $35 shipped and feel like I got a steal of a deal:

Not sure how much it's worth, but definitely more than 35 dollars. That's a steal

Do you have issues with 'tide lines' from all that washing or does it just even out in the end? I really like the depth you've got on that black, but i noticed when I did my own washing over my blue/black that I could see lines everywhere where it had dried.

Not on my marines, but I did a test panel from the inside of a rhino and there were lines.

Because of the panel lines I've been hesitant to actually paint any vehicles for now and work on troops. I want to get an airbrush for vehicles because of all of the large flat panels that will need shading.

Thanks. I've got some skull bits I cast from another model that I plan on using as a campaign badge. The first batch didn't turn out well, but I want to redo it and use it as a campaign badge for some units. I think I am going to try and place it on their bolters, so that should give you an idea of how small it is and what a pain it will be to handle and work with.

I think ultimately I'm going to keep the RG theme but add my own flavor to them. I wish I would have done my own scheme and chapter that used their tactics but I'm too far down the rabbit hole with them now to backtrack.

I really want to do Orks and I have about 20 boys and 2 nobs sitting on sprues that I bought for shadow wars, but I don't think I'll be playing much of that. I love the idea of Orks and I know I'll be able to have fun with that army and really make it my own.

I realize they do and when I start the orks I'll be hanging out in that section as well. For now though I want to focus on my RG. I really enjoy the army/lore and I am looking forward to when I can play my first game with a fully painted army.

On the hobby menu tonight are the bits for my dev sgt as two lascannons. I got the base layers and washes done on the packs and some basic details done on the guns. Lots of little details and lenses so I'm trying to take my time. I forgot to take an after pic before I had everything put up.

My basing material arrived today, and it came in a case I was not expecting

Very excited, but sadly most of this won't see use until I start working on some HQs or models with larger bases. Or maybe I should start an eldar skimmer army instead...

Building a new PC there?

I work in IT so I've always got random PC parts lying around. We did just build a custom CAD rig for a guy that I almost shorted out because of how much I was drooling over it. Half the cost of the PC was a Quadro we put in it so it could handle the rendering.

You may want to crop that picture man, I can see people's personal information.

Pics look great! Looking forward to seeing more of your armies!

Good eye. I didn't even think about that. It was a rough morning. I've cropped the image so once the cache clears the picture will have the numbers removed.

And I'm sure you'll be seeing more of it soon! The skimmers won't actually get based until I start putting my knights together. The next HQ I do may end up standing on one of the broken bikes. I'm not quite ready for the material but the deal was too good to pass up at the time.

Lascannon backpacks were finished tonight and I got more details done on the sgt backpack. I really need to learn to paint faster.

I also really hate the skulls. For whatever reason I cannot paint these things well on any of my models. I feel like I'm improving on my edge highlighting but if there's a skull it ends up being a white blob...

Finally got my two lascannon guys finished up. Really happy with how they turned out. I'll work on the Sgt next to finish him up. He'll need a bit more work since I'm magnetizing each gun option because I have a problem.

uRcp337.jpg

I've never thought about that but maybe that is my issue, the stark white against the black. I did gold on the lascannons and think I like that better. maybe I'll start doing all of my skulls in a gold tone...

Sgt has both arms now and magnetized gun options. I'll probably always run him with a boltgun, but the pistols were good to do so I have them available for other units to use. Magnets are 2mm x 1mm.
