thewarriorhunter
Started on the highlights/recess washing today. Got about 50% of the first highlight done and all of the recess washing. My hand was starting to ache from trying to hold steady lines so I called it a day. I will say with all of the news from the weekender I'm wondering if I'll regret this choice... I would imagine new Primaris transports are in the works and I wonder if a primaris drop pod will eventually come out. Shadow Captain Vyper
In regards to the Weekender and all the speculation with the change in ranges: I struggle with this same debacle a lot. It all comes down to reconciling the use of your time really. The nature of the New™ Games Workshop is that things are constantly changing, and for the more "popular" armies (Space Marines always), things are always in motion. If we opt to wait for "the next big thing", that will create an endless loop of regret that we never break out of, and nothing ever gets assembled/painted/played. At the end of the day, the work you have put into this new sub-faction is some of the best we have seen on our little corner of the B&C, and I encourage you to keep up the great work! thewarriorhunter
It's a filthy Xenos update but I wanted to include it here because the picture warms my heart. Worked with my son this afternoon on his Necrons. Almost got a wraith finished up. My wife snapped this pic without me knowing. I love that you can see the candid smile on his face. I'm in this for the hobby, I really enjoy building and painting. One thing I eventually want to build and paint is an IG Sentinal. I've loved that model and really want to put one together. I'll never play IG but I want to hobby to hobby. I've actually stopped all purchasing until I work through some of my backlog and get stuff done so I have more to play with. Regarding your comments on my Spectral Sicarii I'll say I'm utterly humbled and I really appreciate the compliment. duz_ and Shadow Captain Vyper 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/339466-deployment-of-the-spectral-sicarii-homebrew-rg/page/21/#findComment-5199778 Share on other sites

thewarriorhunter
Omg, I have that fridge! Alright, gather round for story time: My family was moving and we were looking at this house. There was a faint funk that we couldn't find or place. It wasn't terrible but it was definitely there. We didn't think much of it because we'd been looking at scores of homes and each one had it's own 'scent'. My wife was checking out the kitchen and 'ooing' and 'aahing' over all the cabinets and appliances. She made her way to the fridge and opened it. It was at that moment that I believe I was touched by Nurgle and offered his gift. We all ran outside gagging. The utilities in the house were off at our initial viewing and the fridge had been left shut the 3-4 months of no utilities and the stench was unreal. I don't think it would be a stretch to say that Papa Nurgle would wear that as a cologne before going out for a night on the warp. We ended up dubbing the house 'Stinky Fridge'. The price was right and it met most of the 'wants' on our list (I would have loved a 3 car garage but only got 2, and the street is busier than I'd like) so we ended up buying it and moved in about a year and a half ago. Once the power was on and we put a new air filter in the fridge all was well in about a week. My wife loves the fridge also, my biggest complaint is the cost of the water filters and I have no way to run RO over to it. Oh well, such is the life of home ownership. duz_ and Race Bannon 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/339466-deployment-of-the-spectral-sicarii-homebrew-rg/page/21/#findComment-5199786 Share on other sites
thewarriorhunter
I'll never play IG but I want to hobby to hobby. You say this now.... Ha! Believe me I've thought about it however when I give it serious consideration I come to the conclusion that I don't have the time to paint up a guard army. I think the my new chapter (damnit, it was supposed to only be a kill team!) is going to be what fulfills my original vision for my Imperium army. I'll have my Spectral Sicarii base that is supported by knights and a small unit of admech. I do think I'll eventually write a huge story that is lore/fan fiction as I build up the Kill Team and then chapter. I've got the knights renegade box and two armigers from the Forgebane box (and the admech, it'll be a Kill Team) so my Knight detachment is ready, I just need to find time to build it. I have no idea how long it will take me to get done with all of that, but if I ever do and feel like I can move on to another army it'll probably be orks. thewarriorhunter
Alright, the dice thread got me thinking that I need dice for my Spectral Sicarii so I started looking for them today. I love the colors that Chessex has and they make great dice so I started there. I found two sets that I like but I'm not sold on either one. I want to have some custom ones made as well (more on that at the end of the post). The first set I found is Gemini Steel Teal with White. The pictures I've found show two tones of gray, I'm assuming based on the light: The second set is called Gemini Teal White with Black: The Teal/White matches my scheme better but I prefer the steel because that Teal is much richer. One thing that may help my decision is if Chessex offers either of those for custom faces. I don't mind having a block of them but I'd really like them to have my chapter symbol on 6 side like my RG dice do. That leads me to the second part of this post: I think I'm going to change up how I do their icon. I've said before I was going to make their chapter symbol a flower that my wife painted but I'm not feeling that. I've mentioned that I want the flower to be a symbol of accomplishment and honor, representing glory that my marine has achieved through a valiant or heroic action. Similar to how the edelweiss flower was a symbol to German soldiers. I think when a marine has earned the honor the flower will be painted onto one of their knees, not sure if it will be the left or right yet. For their chapter symbol I want a dagger of some sort. I've seen really ornate images like this one: Or something simple and curved to represent the Middle Eastern origins of the chapter (upper right): Or something very basic: This is what is proving challenging because I want to find a dagger/knife silhouette that I like, but that can also be engraved on a die face. I've found some free images I could use but nothing has grabbed me just yet. I also think I want to look into having these printed as a transfer sheet, I'm considering using Fallout Hobby's services for that. I've heard they do it but I haven't looked heavily into reviews of them yet. If I do go with them I'll probably need to find a few more options for symbols or iconography I would want to print for markings or vehicles. I'd love to hear some feedback from the group, and if you know of any other dice that might match my scheme please share! duz_ 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/339466-deployment-of-the-spectral-sicarii-homebrew-rg/page/21/#findComment-5201550 Share on other sites
thewarriorhunter
Got into work early and decided not to work. While looking at inspiration for a dagger I decided to look at bits for knives. I still think I want some type of ceremonial dagger to represent a sicae and the Calth power swords I have are too big. I found these bayonets at Victoria Miniatures: Full page here: https://victoriaminiatures.com/collections/weapons/products/bayonets-in-sheathes-resin-x-10 I think those might be perfect. I'm not keen on the 'bird beak' on the hilt but that would be easy enough to file down. I've reached out to the vendor to see if they can give me the length of them and I've asked around to see if anyone has experience with them. I want to make sure they won't be too big for my marines, or look out of place. Based on the model pictures they show on the product site I think they will work but I want to be sure before I buy 30 of them. EDIT: I also heard back from Chessex and both die colors are available for custom work so that didn't help me make my decision :(. duz_
These ones! I'd be worried that the ones above will be hard to read the dice This is speaking from experience, the glare and contrast can be tough with the dark shiny ones I like those daggers especially the bird beak motif! But then again not RG... thewarriorhunter
The dice you quoted, and the ones above are the same color. If you google Chessex Steel-Teal w/ White you'll see both pictures come up. I think it's a lighting issue. The bird beak motif isn't bad... I might consider keeping it as an homage to the chapter that the Spectral Sicarii are a successor of. golfdeltafoxtrot
Those dice are sweet, they look like they’d match excellently with your colour scheme. I think switching the Chapter symbol is a good move, and that top right dagger would look awesome on a pauldron. It’s simple but striking, and would be really easy to do as a transfer or a custom pad. I’m very excited to see what comes next, this is one of my favourite Astartes projects at the moment. thewarriorhunter
Thanks for the feedback. I'm currently mulling over how to do symbols. I'm not sure what color they should be. For shoulder pads I'm thinking white/light gray or purple against the teal. I would probably want some done up in black as well in for when I apply them to vehicles. Shadow Captain Vyper
Out of those 5, I am also a big fan of the top right (curved) dagger vector I did a google search for curved dagger to find a name to describe that, and I think I found something I like more: https://www.shutterstock.com/image-vector/kukri-machete-icon-608323274 "The kukri or khukuri (Nepali: खुकुरी khukuri) is a knife, originating from the Indian subcontinent, associated with the Nepali speaking Gurkhas of Indiaand Nepal. The knife has an inwardly curved blade, similar to a machete, used as both a tool and as a weapon in Nepal and India." Something about the Kukri looks suitably elegant yet brutal at the same time - a perfect fit for Astartes imo. Love the dice choice btw, I myself had considered those exact same dice (along with these: https://www.amazon.com/Chessex-Dice-d6-Sets-Gemini/dp/B005HXIVTC) Gemini - Shell/White I have held both in person, they are both gorgeous. Edit: https://www.shapeways.com/marketplace?type=product&q=kukri Edited November 28, 2018 by ltvyper Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/339466-deployment-of-the-spectral-sicarii-homebrew-rg/page/21/#findComment-5202287 Share on other sites
thewarriorhunter
I like the Kukri as well, but historically and thematically I don't feel it works for my guys. The Kukri is designed to be used in a chopping or slashing motion. Since my inspiration is from assassins who wanted to blend in, hit their target with hardly anyone noticing, and then walk away I think a blade that is designed to puncture and stab is more suited. Think Assassin's Creed, if you've ever played that. You can walk up to someone and knife them without anyone knowing and continue on your way. I talked to a couple folks in a FB group and I think the bayonets will work to model a ceremonial sicae but the shipping is so brutal. $10 to get them to me :( I'll probably hold off until I'm ready to apply a bunch and place a large order for them. I'm also hoping I can find someone who doesn't mind mailing me one so I can check fit before I spend $20 on something I may or may not be able to use. thewarriorhunter
aa.logan had a suggestion of using Calth combat knives cut down. I have a bunch of them from my Calth box and some Mk IV sprues I've purchased. I'm going to look at those and see if trimming them down might make them work. thewarriorhunter
Got some painting on the pod done. I think I have all of the steel parts of the base done and they've got a layer of Nuln Oil washed over them. thewarriorhunter
Working on the doors. Base layers done with they gray now applied. I'm not really sure what to do with the edges where the circles are. I'm leaning towards just doing the recess wash in each circle to keep it easy. I'm also considering painting each one steel because I think they're supposed to represent bars that lock in place to keep the doors shut during drops.
