Would anyone mind helping me develop the lore for my warband? I don't have any plans to paint them in the near future, I want to spend time on building and converting, it's the most fun for me right now.

I want them to be obsessed with honor in combat, seeking out personal combat, but not insane frothing animals like World Eaters seem to become.

Have you decided what faction yet?

You could go with fallen? Knights of chaos who till see honor to be had in one to one combat.

So speaking of plans. The Lord Discordant looks pretty good rules wise as well as the model, it’s going to be hard not to make one of these for each of the Gods! I’ve aleady begun work on a Nurgle one, but will need the leftovers from the proper kit I think. Poor pic but you get the idea where this is going!

That looks truly disturbing

I much prefer the old ways then, I can understand a chunk of them becoming raving lunatics, since they are Chaos, but the reward for taking skulls should be keeping your sanity. Lorgar turned Angron into a DP so that he wouldn't die from the Butcher's Nails, as far as I recall.

Yeah in First Heretic, when they are fighting against the Ultramarines Khârn sort of pauses and is momentarily jealous (?), of the XIII's discipline and coordination, as they charge the guys with (I recall storm shields but it would make more sense to be boarding shields...), Where the Ultramarines hammer against them, knocking the World Eaters back for a moment when Khârn says "Our Turn" and they paint their armor red with Ultramarine blood.

I sort of like that idea of the Noble Savage. Basically Klingon Space Marines. I found myself writing into corners where I was like "well that's like the the Space Wolves or White Scars".

The Nightblades concept was okay (basically Alpha Legion with a better imo name, leaning hard against the individualism of chaos Marines in that they are almost without culture. They are a mixed element of Halo Spartan 2s, Clone Troopers with the grimness turned up.

Every recruit that passes selection has their mind scrubbed. They basically go the standard Astartes recruitment program, hunger games type stuff, the Kurt Russel Soldier movie training montage type stuff.

And they are drilled as squads, and rotated into and out of Cryo stasis depending on duty cycles.

The goal is an almost alien (to other Astartes, especially the 'free spirited' chaos Astartes). And they are specialists at stealing things (in active warzones). They are black legion and are more often than not misused (think Gaunts Ghosts). "Alphonse" is their leader though he doesn't take the field often. He sends his "Agents of Chaos", Tyrael Adrastus, a Fallen Dark Angel (who happens to be a perpetual) and his best friend a possessed sorcerer who borrows a lot from Deadpool. Adrastus has tried (repeatedly) to leave the long war behind and has been successful-up until a Unforgiven chapter finds him, captures him, disappears everyone he had been around and kills him, before be inevitably comes back. A lot of the narrative I've written comes from Adrastus (who is the only non Nightblade genetically speaking) pretty much being reluctant killer for Alphonse-he works off debts of honor or wagers, but tries real hard not to kill anyone (unless they anger him).

My world eaters borrow some bits from the Dornian Heresy world eaters and the Eldar paths series and Far Cry 3.

They don't use the Butchers Nails; they are decendents of World Eaters company stranded on a Eye World where time moved forward faster for them. There are no Heresy Veteran survivors left and they long lost the ability to remake or use the butchers nails, so their Brazen Apostles, Techmarines and Apothecaries ritualized and focused spiritually into the development of Nails-like abilities in their Berserkers.

Yes, they are more like our mythical Berserkers in that they take herbal/psychoactive chemicals in meditation rituals before they go to fight.

Similarly, when the switch is turned on, they will rip and tear and will fight anything.

They eventually got off world, and quested for War in Khornes name, eventually joining the ongoing war efforts at Cadia.

So what World Eaters used to be.

Even during the Great Crusade they seemed to be on the edge. At least what I remember from the Heresy books I've read, including Templar. Khârn, who was known for his control, was barely controlling his nails?

I think he may have been referring to when they were the war hounds. Before angron and the nails.

Keep in mind I'm writing this just after all the reveals....

So how much of your 'plans' would you make around a very cool model?

Most of the new units are very pro-assault. Some are helping out shooting, and the new Havocs look very cool...tricky, but cool.  Still a lot of new stuff is Daemonically enhanced, and buffed starting with Shadow Spear on.

Abaddon is great but feeling far less necessary as a 'beat stick' and Warlord with so many good traits, and the new formations.

I personally fizzled on Red Corsairs in 8th because it felt like a game where you chase, and chase some of the fastest, shootiest armies in the game (often with 'fly'). This might be an illusion but I feel like the ability to advance and assault could really make a difference with the Discordant, and enhancements to Possessed/GP's, and not to mention the buffs from the MoP's are very, very worth it IMO.

For example: I used to play Defilers, lots of bikers (they work well in Renegades), Huron, and Possessed filled out by Oblits and Cultists. That whole list just got better.

I'm not a fan of the Dark Apostle rules. I think I'm in danger of having too many characters already and the Discordant is a must in any  Daemon Engine army.

Lots to have fun with here though. It's going to be tough deciding over a cool model and character vs. playing actual CSM (!) with Red Corairs!

My original plans revolves around adding nu-Abaddon, CSM and Havocs to my army. These haven’t changed, I am just a whole lot happier upon seeing the new stuff. I have an unpainted Dreadclaw which I am considering using as a ride for Slaaneshi Reaper Havocs. Maybe with some sort of re-roll to hit dude, and it may not even be all that expensive.

*Subtle quietly hums 'Paint It Black' as he patiently bides his time*

haha... is that not so subtly aimed at me? :)

Seriously as mentioned Black Legion is one that I never went full out with in past million years of playing through Chaos. Plus I'm finding they paint up real quick!!! (There's only so much airbrushing you can do with black, right?)

I love playing this game... often I'm in multiple games a week with different groups, but some are quite competitive. (Everyone gets their back bone up when I say that but it's a good thing). Chaos has been tough, and I really, really hate playing soup. Competitively I bet we see Red Corsairs in nearly every game... not just for CP but recycling (Strategem) and they didn't lose the assault thing!

Crimson Slaughter... what a GREAT Strat they have, and it's so fluffy for them... create a haunted house within 12" of your unit? How awesome is that? So that stinky Tuna-tau firebase is hiding out in castle as usual? Deepstrike termies, play haunted house card... -1 to hit! (Plus get a CP on a 5+ when you kill a unit!... and it gets around the CP FAQ limitation!)

Then there's THE Legion... the coolest bad guy in the universe that refused daemonhood. And his new BoD Vigilus rules... and it's all about moral.

My first take on all of this stuff is the character count is incredibly high now for Chaos armies in general. Cultsits are almost mandatory in numbers. High point characters are really almost a negative here.

I'm trying to come up with a very shooty Chaos army idea for Black Legion that would work. Oblits (I'm finding) are still mandatory. New Havocs are well suited for them as well, and Termies are now cheaper by virtue of the Chainaxe. This all helps offset Abaddon.  I'm not sure it would work though.

What a great ton of work they've done on Renegades generally, and Daemon type units specifically!

I feel like I'm betraying my roots, but after many years as a Word Bearers player I'm without doubt going renegade chapters, the traits just look so much more fun to play then the traitor legions. Probably going to go for Red Corsairs, an actual incentive to run lots of those beautiful new marine models is awesome, plus I'm a big fan of Huron and his merry band, and the color scheme as well.

Oh, there was no underlying message in my post, just personal expression; seems you're experiencing something of a feedback loop. :smile.:

I'm Black Legion through-and-through, so no matter what the rules are my choice is made for me by the Dark Gods. Thankfully, given the organizational structure of The Legion, there's enough freedom to explore other factions but my first muse demands that an appropriate core is painted Black before I can be distracted by other inspiration.

Personally, I'm getting tired of the term 'soup' since it seems to have lost its original meaning of cherry-picking the best units from several sources to cover any/all weaknesses that might be inherent in a given faction/codex (Read: making soup with only the best ingredients) and now is synonymous with pretty much any allying that brings an advantage. Allying is only acceptable with an odd segment of the community (not sure just how large it is) if the outcome is reasonably neutral or a disadvantage for fluffy fiction reasons. I'm not going to get caught up in that claptrap and build a force that I want to build and when that means I'm going to bring in some allies that's what I'm going to do, unapologetically. By their very fiction, Black Legion have many tools at their disposal and are very willing to use whatever is appropriate to achieve the desired outcome. I may hate the term on some level, but I'm also embracing it, I guess . Soup, for lack of a better term, will be on my menu when it suits my appetite. Heh... maybe I'll start using 'stew' if anyone ever tries to call foul, "Nope it's not 'soup', it's my own brand of 'stew'! Now open up and try a bite!" :smile.:

Yeah, I was going to hold off and wait for more of the new kits before breaking down, but the dice are too good to risk missing out. I'm usually not a sucker for dice, but these appealed to me. Oh well, I guess that means I can pick up Abby and some Marines to tinker with while I consider how this will proceed. *Sigh* So much for being strong...  :)

A big winner here is the Havocs T5 and can move and shoot. You can buff them to moon and back too especially with those rotor cannons. A knight would be hard pressed to survive that.

Strat to shoot twice, VotLW, prescience, Lord re-rolls, and Dark Apostle +1 to wound prayer. 2+ re-rolling 1s wounding T8 on a 3+, possibly re-rolling 1s due to the new detachment warlord trait. Is there an effective way to pull it off. I feel like castleing next to the new terrain piece but then reaching out and touching the back will be difficult.

It doesn't mention, but a look at the closeup image shows that the gold colour is metallic flake suspended in the plastic and it looks a lot like the kind of plastic used in typical dice. Can't say for sure but they look like the same dense plastic to me.

Been kind of out of it for a while, not had a lot of passion for the hobby. But all this new Chaos stuff coming out has gotten me perking up a bit and I'm considering getting back to it, though shelving all my old stuff in favor of starting up a warband. Ruminating on this, I'm tempted towards Emperor's Children - even if they haven't gotten much of anything new in forever, I do like me some Noise Marines. Maybe even the Flawless Host. Or perhaps Night Lords?

Keep in mind I'm writing this just after all the reveals....

All of them. Already have a large infantry/mech force; I plan to get Abaddon and see how a large footslogging army made entirely of infantry goes, supported by 2 Sorcs, a DA, and - depending on relics - a Lord, EC or Prince. The change to Havocs is a bit concerning, no ablative wounds but can keep up with the horde without penalties. Depending on points I plan to add those new obliterators for a DS element to help split the enemy's focus.

Might eventually get a box of the new chaos marines for Chosen and the new termies, even though I don't really need more.

100% this. The new Abaddon alone has skyrocketed my interest in 40k again.
