Hi all,

As mentioned in the other thread, I have the ability to run a game of Only War to supplement and diversify the offerings in this sub-forum. Unlike the adventures of Blackthorn and Swordhand, which is a lumbering and hugely-detailed campaign, the intention is for this to be a relatively short and bloody one-shot focused around the exploits of an Imperial Guard Penal Legion.

Players will take the role of Penal Legionnaires, ranging the gamut from scoundrels, rogues and wrongfully-convicted heroes to maniacs, madmen and murderers. Their lives are cheap, but they will be spent in the Emperor's name.

I have a plan for character creation and will share that once this gets going, but this is a thread to gauge interest. I can ideally run this game with 3-6 players.

If you're new to FFG's games or unsure of how the rules work - or don't even have access to the Only War rulebook, then don't worry - you will be given everything you need to know!

Please let me know your thoughts,

Mol.

Present and interested. I've access to the rulebooks, though little experience in actually playing.

Awesome to see a positive initial response! The one-shot I'm going to be playing recommends 2-4 players, though as I've said I'm happy to run 3-6 players. The Comrade system in Only War does allow us to have a couple of characters per player anyway, which allows us to have casualties.

After I've got a weekend update done for the Deathwatch game I will be in a position to put up my character creation post.

Hope everyone is well.

And that's why Mol became "Commissar Mol".

Before that he was just Bob Molotov.  Then he discovered casualties and got promoted. ;)

I'll have to sit this one out as I'm busy all over the place, but good luck everyone, will be cool to see something different.

MR.

The soldiers of the 101st Penal Legion are a mix of criminals, murderers and malcontents; those too ill-disciplined or simply too violent to abide by the military law that binds the soldiers of the Astra Militarum in service. The 101st are expendable, expected to die in the Emperor’s service and redeem their crimes. Assigned to the harshest warzones and provided with little in the way of equipment, their lives are a currency to be spent by Militarum Commanders and Generals.

You will play a character condemned to the Penal Legions. One thing is certain - you will die in the Emperor’s service. It is up to you to ensure that you do not die with your duty left undone.

To begin with, I would like to avoid long and complicated character backstories. (I would rather backstories come out over time in play.)

Notes:

  • Characters can be either male or female, whichever is your preference.
  • Characters can vary in age and length of service within the Astra Militarum.
  • It would be my preference for players to avoid any well-known GW regiment. That is, no Catachans, Valhallans, Mordians, etc. If you want to have a Legionnaire from a desert world, they don’t have to be a Tallarn - they can be from another desert planet.
  • Players should co-ordinate to ensure that they don’t double-up on character types. There is scope for one player to play an Ogryn, or to have one as their companion character. Equally, there is scope for one ex-Storm Trooper.
  • The roleplay will fall apart if you’re all edgy, silent and introverted characters - bear that in mind!
  • Whilst you are playing criminals (and a good Lijah Cuu-esque character is fun to hate) when answering question 5, please consider that issues around beat, sexual assault or sexual violence may cause unintended distress and should likely be avoided for everyone’s ease.
  • Additionally, whilst it would be dramatically appropriate for characters to be innocent of the crimes they’ve been accused of, it loses its specialness if it’s the case for everyone. Players should coordinate to ensure only one character is innocent.

In order to create your character, I’d like you to answer the following seven sentences:

Who were you before your internment?

1: Finish the sentence: “I was…”

  • “...born on an agri-world”
  • “...born on a deathworld”
  • “...born on a fortress world”
  • “...born into the nobility”
  • “...born on a hive world”
  • “...born on an Imperial world”
  • “...born again as a penitent”
  • “...born into the Schola Progenium”
  • “...born on a shrine world”
  • “...born in the void of space”
  • “...born on an Ogryn world”

2: Finish the sentence: “Before this, I served the Astra Militarum in…”

  • “...an Armoured Regiment”
  • “... a Reconnaissance Regiment”
  • “...a Drop Troop Regiment”
  • “...a Light Infantry Regiment”
  • “...a Line Infantry Regiment”
  • “...a Mechanised Infantry Regiment”
  • “...a Siege Infantry Regiment”
  • “...an Artillery Regiment”
  • “...a Guerrilla Regiment”
  • “...a Grenadier Regiment”
  • “...a Rough Rider Regiment”

3: Finish the sentence: “I was...”

  • “...assigned as a Heavy Weapon Gunner”
  • “...assigned as a Medic”
  • “...assigned as a Sergeant”
  • “...assigned as a Vehicle Operator”
  • “...assigned as a Weapon Specialist”
  • “...proud to serve as a Storm Trooper”*

(Note: only one character should be a former Storm Trooper)

4: Finish the sentence: “War has taught me…”

  • “...to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with my comrades.”
  • “...to never falter amidst the fury of battle.”
  • “...the most effective ways to slay a hated enemy.”
  • “...to face my enemies in single combat.”
  • “...to follow orders without hesitation.”
  • “...proficiency with a lasgun.”
  • “...to survive in the wilderness.”
  • “...to destroy enemy armoured vehicles.”
  • “...to move and fight effectively in confined spaces.”
  • “...to infiltrate behind enemy lines and strike the enemy from an unexpected quarter.”
  • “...to destroy enemy armoured vehicles.”
  • “...to fight in the God-Emperor’s name.”
  • “...to eliminate the enemy from a distance with a sniper rifle.”
  • “...to rely on powerful explosives to bring the enemy down.”
  • “...to build and disassemble fortifications.”

5: Finish the sentence: “My crime was…”

  • Consider here what crime or crime(s) your character committed in order to be reassigned to a Militarum Penal Legion. If you are lacking inspiration, consult the members of Schaeffer’s Last Chancers, who were guilty of crimes such as murder, refusal to follow orders, stealing supplies, looting enemies or desertion.

6: Finish the sentence: “My nickname is...”

  • Again, consider members of the Last Chancers such as Animal, Fingers, or Hero.

7: Finish the sentence: “Three adjectives others would use to describe me are…”

  • ...
  • ...
  • and...

I was born on an Agri World. Before this, I served the Astra Militarum in a Light Infantry regiment. I was assigned as a Medic. War has taught me to follow orders without hesitation. My noticed crime was unsanctioned distribution of medical supplies (stimms and narcotics). My nickname is 'Stimms'. Three adjectives others would use to describe me are weasley, cheerful and disconcerting.

I decided to change up the character I would like to play. Here's what I've got.

Who were you before your internment?

1: “I was...born on an Ogryn World”
2: “Before this, I served the Astra Militarum in…a Guerilla Regiment”

3: “I was...assigned as a Gun Lugger” (heavy gunner).
4: “War has taught me…to follow orders without hesitation.”

5: “My crime was…looting enemies."
6: “My nickname is...'Lughead.'"
7: “Three adjectives others would use to describe me are…loyal, strong, and smart... ...and tough!

(Obviously "smart" would be a sarcastic response, but as an Ogryn, Lughead might not understand that.)

Idea:

Ex Strom Trooper

Female (OOC; Dice rolls can be funny things...)

Mid 20's-ish... Never ask a lady her age.

Katherine, I was named for Saint Katherine Elysius... we didn't really do last names in the Progenium

Who were you before your internment?

1: Finish the sentence: “I was…”

I was born into the Schola Progenium

2: Finish the sentence: “Before this, I served the Astra Militarum in…”

As  a Tempestus, I did a little of everything. But we specialized in infiltrating behind enemy lines, assassinating High Value Targets, demolitions and just general mayhem. I was never cut out for the Soroitas anyways.... too many rules.

3: Finish the sentence: “I was...”

A Storm trooper drop regiment, proud and strong... life is funny sometimes...

4: Finish the sentence: “War has taught me…”

Nothing beats the rush you get when you free fall from a Valkyrie behind enemy lines.

5: Finish the sentence: “My crime was…”

I took a chance and raided the local commander's ration station, corps starch lacks taste after two week and after two months you'll do almost anything for real food.

6: Finish the sentence: “My nickname is...”

Scarlett, due to my bright red hair, I've started to let it grow as much as the guards let me.

7: Finish the sentence: “Three adjectives others would use to describe me are…”

Cleaver

Pretty

Resourceful

Edit:

I altered a few things to make it more clear what she did and tried to answer the question as if she was being asked them.

Just a note, Steel - Questions 2 and 4 matter as it will determine which skills your character gets! I would assume from your character proposal that it would be a "drop troop regiment" and the one about "infiltrating behind enemy lines" or "fighting in confined spaces"?

More about the broadness of what her mission profiles would've been. Generally speaking, as a retired gunships pilot attached thar had been airborne regiment, drop troopers (airborne) and infiltrating go hand in hand. So I see Scarlett being more on the infiltration side and less on the confined spaces.

Does that make sense?

Okay, so: we have three characters, and I've had two other players message me on Instagram expressing their interest pending account creation.

The above post is the first pass at your character profiles, combining the various options available. If you have the Only War rulebook (or a way to read the PDF) then you can have a look at some of the skills and talents. Each of you has some choice I believe in some of your abilities.

I'll give mine a more in depth look a bit later CM. I'll revise this with my indications later, thanks for all your hard work!

Edit:

Man this is hard to pick.... But I think this could be interesting to use, even if it might be a bit of a throw away talent.

I have a couple questions before I make my decisions. First, is Lughead going to have to try not to break his issued weapon, or will he be able to take a ripper gun alongside/instead of a non Ogryn-Proof heavy weapon? Second, what is the Regimental favored heavy weapon?

Edit: I didn't realize the heavy stubber was Ogryn-Proof.

Edited by Fenrykus

Fenrykus: Based on the rules in Shield of Humanity, it would seem that you will replace your Main Weapon with a Ripper Gun and two clips. It turns out that I misread the rules regarding Ogryn-Proof weaponry and didn't realise that the Clumsy trait prevents Ogryns from using any weapon that isn't Ogryn-proof.

I would be happy for your Ogryn to have a Heavy Stubber, or alternately a Low-Tech Melee weapon (Great Weapon?) alongside his Ripper Gun.
