[DW] Blackthorn/Swordhand Episode III: Recruitment Thread

Yeah, it's a kind of character choice - are you going to be an assassin or a brawler.

The former kills the hard stuff, the latter windmills the chaff and does well against Elite types.

Hey Steel, your opinion mate, Power Sword or Chainsword?

MR.

Power sword, no question.

Having the ability to destroy other non-power weapons, non-force weapons, non-natural weapons, and non-demon weapons with a successful parry is pretty sweet. Not to mention +3 Pen and Damage is a nice addition too. There is a reason why Tyber wants to add a power field to his black sword (I'm trying to have it grow with him, paying the signature war-gear talents for it to grow with him.)

Edit:

I almost forgot, Power fields also cause extra mag damage to hordes too.

Edit #2:

Based on the options you listed, can I say Champion?

What you can carry is like two tons of stuff.

What you can practically carry however...

Changing Pistol or Basic weapons is a free action.  You could carry Pistol, Knife, Bolter, Stalker, Frags, Kraks and all the other gubbins.  To be fair, the Stalker will net you almost exactly what you want for your special Bolter anyway, with a few bells and whistles on top.  What Mol might allow is a shot selector to be fitted to it, to allow more munitions.  As you are Rank 2, you could Requisition this item, a shot selector upgrade and a scope (if not already fitted) and take Signature Wargear Master, which allows an extra effect to applied.

The weapon is always yours, looks like how you want as it could be a Lysimachus Pattern Stalker Bolter, in game it just functions as a Stalker...

@MR, thanks for the write up on Psychic Powers / Righteous Fury. Makes sense to combine as you suggested.

No worries.  To be fair, it's Mol's call, but it makes the most sense to me.

@ Steel, always. ;)  I was doing the basics.

Edit: if my calculations are correct, if I'm frenzied and sustaining Might of the Ancients, I do 1d10+32 damage per swing + 1d10/DoS (bypassing armour and T) if I succeed on the force weapon power test, all with 15 penetration... That's absolutely insane.

Depends what you are facing. Sustaining a psychic power is a half action so you've got one big swing per round. Devastaing against targets that have expended their defenses, but one on one an assault specialist will style all over you.

I'm a Scion of Sanguinius, if I don't kill it on the charge then I deserve what I get!

Charge is a full action :P

The bonuses from psychic powers can be immense but they come with heavy limitations. A mix of teamwork, squad modes, and timing of the powers are needed.

I know, I know. I've actually replaced MotA with a power from the Sanguinary discipline anyway since I felt it proper.

Mojake - just looking at your Force Axe on your character sheet, my personal preference is to separate out bonuses so I can see where they're from. If you can sort it out when you get a chance I'd appreciate it.

Will do that this evening for each weapon.

One question: Rites of Battle mentions the bionics earned as part of the deed as being 'best-craftsmanship'. Does that mean Boros gains the benefits of the exceptional versions of both his arm and heart?

As soon as I've got answers and approval from CM, I'll move on to writing down my equipment and wargear.

Up to Mol, but as written, no they don't give it.

It's 'only' twenty rec. As an Assault Marine, there isn't much else to spend it on really. I mean on episodes 1 and 2, Tyber only spent 5 rec on himself for two-bolt pistol clips of Kraken rounds.... everything else was given away... or spent on a joke to tease Akkad.

True. On the other hand I also want a Combat/Storm Shield, and do I really need the Takedown talent?

I too am wanting a nice weapon upgrade eventually. I really want to signature wargear something, but I'm waiting for our next XP bonus. I think I will survive with a bolter and a servo arm on my side. I'm not as handy in melee but a melta gun or something seems nice. The ability to melt a hole through a tank just seems right. Maybe one day pick up a thunderhammer or omnissian axe maybe too as standard gear one day.

Heh, a thunderhammer is on my list to pick up at some point. The errata makes it just so good, +1 Unnatural STR mod, and the concussive feature is just so awesome.

As for a combat shield, yeah, that's going to be something Tyber's going to be using for the next episode, now that I'll be able to take it (hopefully.)

Murder is the best takedown.

@Steel, cheek! :tongue.:   Cadence didn't jam once in the bossfight!

I noticed! What a nice change... Guess Akkad finally figured out that feed problem... also he didn't try to use his solo mode either for the extra RoF...

@Steel, Tyber is the Ahu.  It is so.

@AHorriblePerson, I've been looking again at Bionics and have seen Errata 1.1 replaced The Price of Victory Deed Best Craftsmanship Bionics to Master Craftsmanship Bionics, so that should mean you get the bonuses from Exceptional.

So weapons wise do we start with the ones mentioned as standard and then buy things we want later? Was hoping to get a power sword or chain sword as part of my characters, well character. No bother if we have to wait.

As a tac marine I get a bolter as std, but can that be any pattern I chose and can anyone recommend a pattern over others if so. I was just thinking stalker as they are cool looking and Ekieo has been 20 years in service of the DW by the point he is re assigned to this unit from serving at Jerichos Reach. Thought he might have have already acquired certain equipment by this time. As I'm new I'm open to suggestions and the like.

Yep, standard kit.  When you are given Requisition, this is what Deathwatch uses instead of gold.  If you are famous enough, the very grumpy Techmarines may let you have better toys than a toothpick and a rock.

You can use any pattern Bolter as long as it's a Bolter..! :tongue.:  You can get the Stalker no problem (although that is a different kind of Bolter to the one the Deathwatch issues and has no shot selector - if you know weapons, the Stalker is a DMR compared to an assault rifle).  If you want to make out you had it from Jericho Reach, you can take a Talent called Signature Wargear.  This basically means you have always had that gun, are known for having it and it is always available for every mission, you do not need to ""buy" it again.

The same with your Power Sword.  If you have enough "Gold" and clout with the Deathwatch, you ask for one and they very graciously lend it to you.

Edits Mine.
