Interesting - I don't see why not. It's your XP to spend and it would obviously prevent you from gaining skills and statistic increases. I suppose the counter-argument would be skills such as Sound Constitution, which specifically state you can take them multiple times (the implication being that you can't do so for others.)

What do other rules-people think?

Petragor: You can choose a Power Weapon using Signature Wargear. It's within your requisition range. It should be an item you have brought from the Celestial Lions - and such a worthy tool requires a name!

Apostle: Fire Selector is fine, as the DW plastics have combi-weapons with the special issue ammo. The only thing is that I don't see why you're using Signature Wargear (Master) to take the Combi-Weapon, which is only 15 REQ. Have I missed something?

Hmm. I have been playing Battlefleet Gothic a lot, and I love doing Lightning Strikes, which is something Chaka would have done a lot too. Maybe "The Lightning Sabre" or something along those lines?

I'm cool with it CM, it makes some sense after all.

AFAIK, you can only take any Talent once per table, hence Awareness, Awareness +10 etc.  Also see Sound Constitution (X2) this means you can take the Talent twice.

Signature Wargear has no such allowance.  Be picky with SigGear as you only get one item and it gets convoluted how it applies.

For example, if you took a Flamer as SigGear you could add a few upgrades to it as part of the Talent (you are allowed to take a combination of things up to 20 Requisition).  If you then reached Rank 2, (which you are) you have the option of SigGear 'Master', which allows an item to go up to 40 Requisition all in.

The problem you have is that you either have to:

  • 1) Upgrade the Flamer (which you can, with gear or even Craftsmanship) or
  • 2) Trade in your original Wargear item for a new item, perhaps a Heavy Flamer, which then could have upgrades and gear slapped on it.

There are also other uses other than guns for the SigGear talent, which I won't go into here as I don't want to kick over a bucket of hot coals.

To piggy-back off of Mazer's comment, there is additional advance of the basic Signature Wargear further down the General Space Marine Advance tables (Rank 5), indicating that indeed you are only usually allowed one selection per table.

Exactly - it doesn't mean you can't have multiple SigGear items, it just restricts where and when you can have them.  The SigGear rules themselves say it can be taken multiple times over the Marine's career - it just doesn't mean all at once.

What is less clear is whether or not SigGear 'Master' also uses up SigGear.

I'm not exactly a rules person but (presuming this is about Sig Wargear, if it isn't tell me) I see no reason why not.

Under normal circumstances you can only take sig wargear as many times as listed on your advancement. There are a few ways to get more - tactical marines can get a bonus item (from a set list) at character creation, and all Salamanders get an extra pick.

As far as I can tell Master Wargear upgrades one of your Sig Wargear talents, replacing your old item with a new or upgraded item.
Hero Wargear is a seperate and distinct item.

I think Mol will have to wrangle with this one as to how he wants to play it!

I'm open to other name suggestions, but I will use "Lightning Sabre" as the name for my Powersword for now, I have a feeling I'll be using it a lot. (Yes you will! :D)

Sounds good!  Swish, swish, zap! :smile.:  Maybe something more esoteric?  Celestial Lions use terms like Pride Leader and Deathspeaker.  Maybe Tooth of Heaven? Liontooth?  Insert other claw/heaven/stabby words to taste.  Maybe go to the roots of the Celestial Lion culture Assagai, something like that.

That was my initial reading.  So looking at it again, it does indeed look like it uses up both Talents over both tables.

Interesting.

Hmm, I definitely want "Lightning" something. Lightning Claws are already a thing so that won't do. Maybe something like "Lightning Dawn"?

What about:

Weerlig Straal

It's Afrikaans for Lightning Bolt

I like it, and I can call it two names that way! That's 100% more name, per name!

I'd personally think you should aim for something like Zulu or Xhosa rather than Afrikaans, as it would be more consistent with the Celestial Lions' themes as presented by AD-B.

I just looked at Zulu for Lightning (Umbani) and Lightning Bolt (Umbani Wezulu). You could try something like that?

Regarding multiple Signature Wargear, it'd seem like only one, then.

Yeah, the original idea is good, all we need is a little language change. Thanks for the translations too CM!

Hi all,

Certainly Helgrim has been at the Watch-Station for some time - Achillion could've been too.

The way I see it, Helgrim has probably been largely locked up in the Reclusiam for the better part of the past couple of years learning the full suite of responsibilities of a Deathwatch Chaplain, on a sort of spiritual journey as it were. So now he's ready to mingle with the general population once again and crack some xenos skulls (and he has a serious backlog of xenos to smite).

@CM I've put a ton of work into Helgrim over the past couple of days -- he should be 99% ready (pending your input on a couple of things and approval of his chapter trapping).

I had a bit of difficulty coming up with a decent chapter trapping due to the relative lack of fluff regarding them for the Doom Eagles, and ultimately decided a tabard with Deathwatch livery (see Black Templars) might actually suit him rather well. At this point in his life, he considers himself effectively dead to his chapter (and may indeed have sent a communication to them along the lines that he's probably not coming back having just been raised to chaplaincy within the Deathwatch and to strike his name from the chapter rolls per their tradition), and has committed what remains of his life to the Deathwatch and their holy mission. Alternatively, the Golden Icons (Blood Angels) could be reskinned for the Doom Eagles quite effectively.

I'm also going to take your advice and roll with the Black Templars solo & squad abilities from RoB, but reskinned for the Doom Eagles.

Edit: without getting too meta-gamey, I have the Fear (1) trait for my armor, but will this be useful at all for your style of game?

Can I take the Guardian Bolt pistol from the ROB rules. Just thought seeing Ekieo has been with the DW for 20 years he may have achieved something in his service time?

Ive also changed my Bolter from Stalker to std DW version which I presume is the Godwyn pattern?

Last for now... I've taken the Kraken rounds as the special clip we are allowed. Do I put that as a separate weapon or add the stats to the bolter?

The kraken ammo you need to keep track of normally as you have a finite supply. Maybe we play different here so need mol to weigh in but normally regular bolt rounds you have as many as you need (just need to track if your clip is empty or not for reloading purposes). The kraken rounds you have one clip and normally your bolt gun has a fire selector so you can switch between normal ammo and SIA on the fly. Of course seit hinge SIA types requires a reload.

Idle curiosity, but how many req pts is typical for the start of a campaign/story? Presumably it changes (increases?) in some way as your Rank (or maybe Renown?) increases, but for example how much did the existing players get when you started Blackthorn?
