God, I splashed out on Octarius thinking that those Praetor wouldn't be out for a couple of months...

FW/HH timelines between preview and release have always been weird, though this might be an effort to make sure nothing is still pending prior to the autumn boxed set release I guess? Only the SoH Praetor(s) to go from what has been previewed so far, so will also be interesting to see what is in this month's Legion Dispatch. My money would be on a Terminator SoH HQ.

Ya it seems like they're ramping up releases for some unknown reason lol.

Oh yeah, there's the obvious reason why that might occur, but that doesn't happen until it happens. Until they announce what's coming, it ain't here yet.

A pleasant surprise. Hopefully they keep pumping out those Praetors.

Definitely a pleasant surprise, one of my friends is playing UM now so I'm happy for them, and I get the pleasant surprise of Argel Tal with it, so I'm pleased.

Looking at the pics on Warhammer Community again and I know there was some disquiet about how '40k' and covered in eagles the two UM Praetors looked but...it really isn't that much more than the Invictarus Suzerain kit is it?

I get the "too 40K" argument but I think they're fine. I absolutely love Argel Tal though and I think it's very interesting that FW seem to be moving awayfrom the giant scenic bases. Edited by Corswain

Wonder if Argel Tal will be released as a 'Character Series' model or not. Qin Xa was the last new HQ release to get the black box & scenic base treatment IIRC.

Will say this, the IF Praetors instantly looked x1000 'more Heresy' once they had that brown 'Siege of Terra' background behind them in photos.

That looks... Intriguing. I'm at work so can't check out how good this all looks yet. It's an interesting choice to release it as a free pdf.

I'm not sure I saw any news about what's happening with any other Heresy news? Also, feels like a weird choice not to go with the Shadow Crusade considering this week's releases

Probably because the Shadow Crusade is large enough to get a black book, whereas the point of the Exemplary Battles is to focus on conflicts that aren't.

This campaign series is a great way to explore such conflicts, which may not otherwise have their own dedicated campaign books. Horus Heresy High Lord Andy Hoare had this to say about the scenarios:

“An Exemplary Battle is a conflict that’s been mentioned in one of the many Black Library Horus Heresy novels, or in one of the Horus Heresy or even Adeptus Titanicus publications, but which might not be quite big enough to be given the full campaign book treatment.

“Some of these battles are quite well known and will be familiar to fans of the Horus Heresy – others are much more obscure and may be known to only the most dedicated of readers.”

He also notes that each scenario is lifted from existing Horus Heresy lore and is much more than a throwaway.

“The aim with this series is to give players everything they’d get out of a black book, only condensed down to a handful of pages. You’ll find a description of the battle, written by the Horus Heresy team writers after having undertaken extensive research of the source material or talking to the Black Library authors.”

The new Huscarl rules are interesting, though. Hopefully they'll get some models in the near future.

It's nice, it really is nice, that there's a free pdf, and I hate to be that guy - but this is showcasing a brand new imperial fists unit that uses an out of stock storm shield and is played on out of stock terrain....

FW deleting the talk about the new box on their FB posts.

C'mon GW, spill the beans. Even if it's: "This is coming, this is included (ideally weapons breakdown of the Contemptor) but you still have to wait a couple of months due to production/logistics."

I have to say I am grateful for these battle packs though, could be fun.

This is really cool! And ongoing support like this is going to be what keeps AoD alive for the future IMO

Guess that Argel Tal might get rules in a Shadow Crusade campaign pack as well

Shields will be back in stock shortly though, they're just going Out of Stock while everything is being updated.

This is a welcome surprise! Especially free rules for a new unit even if it is pretty basic. With the release of Argel Tal and the speed of the UM Praetors coming out, now this, I feel like things are definitely looking up for the Heresy.

Now just announce the damn boxset GW!

It's clever. They're selling characters for the character series without the aforementioned unique bases, something that justified the insane cost for a lot of these characters (Pollux, Sevatar, Garro, etc) but are charging the same price as if they still had the unique and interesting bases anyway! VERY clever.

Interesting. Free rules is definitely the way to go. Is this a retcon with the Huscarls? From memory I thought the novels had them wearing Indomitus Terminator Armour. Also, I'm wondering if Argel Tal will come with a Custodes spear as a wargear option? otherwise the model as it is looks like any other Gal Vorbak (they didn't even make his helmet look beast-like :( )

Yeah, in Praetorian of Dorn they wear normal power armour or Indomitus in the final battle. They should be like a normal command squad and have the option to choose what they want, but I guess FW really wants to sell people their cataphractii upgrade sets (named and featured in the PDF)

Ah well, I guess it'd be easy enough to run an alternate homebrew version of the Terminator Huscarls using these rules as a template but changing the armour type. That being said, I could swear they used assault cannons (or at the very least some form of ranged weapon) in The Solar War, which isn't represented here? Might be misremembering though

EDIT: All this being said, I was quite a fan of this free PDF and appreciated the missions and detail of the lore of the battle, which I felt was disappointingly missing from Crusade, so hope they continue putting in the same effort they put into this PDF at the bare minimum

Or the right hand and left hand are either not beholden to each other or simply don’t follow through with each other. This isn’t the first time FW fluff and rules don’t match BL descriptions and those were for things were nothing monetary was on the line.

The two they've done this for, Maloghurst and Saul Tarvitz are less expensive than the other characters though, so they aren't charging the same price.

Pollux is $59, whereas Maloghurst and Tarvitz are $47 as examples.

I can understand disliking that they're doing so, but there's a definitive 25% reduction in price, so the claim that they are equivalently costed is false.

Man huscarls look like a strong option. 275 for a 5 wound, 11 attack, 2+ 3++ scoring hq unit that can fill the compulsory slot?

Good stuff.

And they come with Teleporters included in the base unit cost which is nice.

Sol Gloves for S8 AP1 Master-Crafted isn't too bad of an option as their only access to weapons that ID T4.
